Chapter 11

I was awoken by Brendon tapping me on the shoulder. "Morning gorgeous" he whispered, gently kissing my forehead. "Morning!" I replied, letting off a big yawn. "Time to get up. It's your first day today, remember." Ah yes, the day I would scare children, being a dental assistant and all that.  Brendon handed me some turquoise scrubs and insisted I changed into them. "You've gotta look the part!" he chuckled. Me and Brendon got ready together and soon enough we were in the car on our way to work. The car journey didn't last long at all. We entered the building and headed straight to Brendon's dental room. It seemed we were the first ones at work today, except the cleaner. "Okay Lola, time to teach you the basic ropes. Grab a pair of gloves and try putting them on." I followed Brendon's orders and pulled out two rubber gloves. I struggled pulling them on and realised why Brendon made such a big fuss when stretching them on. I did the same as him, pulling them down my arm and releasing for them to snap into place. I wiggled my fingers and gave Brendon a thumbs up.  "Good!" He nodded his head and clapped his hands, congratulating me for my efforts. "Now grab a mask. Place it over your nose and mouth. This way you wouldn't be breathing over our patient." Once again I obeyed, doing exactly what he said. The mask felt strange on my face, I wasn't a big fan. Then a worry rushed through my head. Was I becoming a scary dentist? The next thing I knew, Brendon was planting himself onto the dentist chair and laying his head on the rest. "You see that button over there?" he asked me, pointing to a small button on the side of the chair. "Push it." I pushed the button and the chair began to lower. I was going to check Brendon's teeth! I felt very excited for a second and I didn't care about the worries rushing through my head. "Now all you need is a bib, the light and a mirror and you're ready to check my teeth!" he winked at me and snapped his teeth together, playfully. I knew what to do, I'd seen Brendon do it before. I grabbed a bib and placed it on Brendon's chest. Next, I emptied the contents of the plastic wallet onto the tray, noticing soon I'd be putting them in Brendon's mouth. Lastly, I reached up and positioned the light so it was pointing directly on to his mouth. I sat on the chair and rolled it round to his head, bringing the mirror with me. I tapped his lips. "Open up patient." This time, he was the one doing what I said. I placed the mirror in his mouth and began searching around his teeth. They were unbelievably straight, clean and pristine, they put my teeth to shame! I did as Brendon did in my mouth, using my finger to retract his teeth for a better look. When I'd finished up looking in Brendon's mouth I removed the mirror and sat the chair up. "Thanks doc!" he said cheerfully, joking around. "Just a quick thing for if you check any real patient's teeth. Look out for black dots on the teeth. They'll most likely be a cavity and will need filling. Other than that, welcome to the team!" Brendon shook my hand and we laughed together. This dentist thing wasn't all that bad! The clock stroke 9 o'clock and it was time for the day to officially begin. Brendon had told me we had to be professional until the working day was over. I agreed not wanting to upset my fellow college. He'd also told me that many children were terrified of the dentist and that I'd need to comfort them. I agreed to this too. Brendon and I were sitting in his dental room until he told me to go collect our very first patient. "Bradley Wilkinson is up first Lola. He's 13 years old and just here for a checkup." I nodded and left the room, ready to collect our first patient of the day. I turned the corner to reach the waiting room and saw many petrified faces turn my way. They all looked at me, praying it wasn't their turn to be taken back into the dark and dingy room and placed on the life ending dental chair.  "Bradley Wilkinson please" I called looking over at the children. A young boy stood up, he looked terrified! The boy had light blonde hair and nerd like glasses, the type a smart person would generally wear.  Bradley slowly approached me and I felt the need to comfort him.  "Hello Bradley, follow me and we'll get your appointment over and done with as fast as possible" I smiled. I placed my hand on Bradley's shoulder and led him to the room where Brendon was waiting, ready to examine the poor boys teeth. We entered the room and to my surprise Brendon already had his mask on his face, prepared for the examination. I heard Bradley let out a subtle whimper and I promised him everything would be okay. Bradley took a seat in the chair, I could tell he was having trouble fighting back his tears.  Before anything else occurred, me and Brendon both slid on a pair of surgical gloves each. Again, I heard Bradley whimpering to himself. I felt so bad! I also placed a mask onto my face and we were prepared to view Bradley's teeth. "Okay Bradley, just going to lay you back now" Brendon explained, using his soft and gentle voice. The chair laid back and I placed a bib onto Bradley's chest. "I'll use a mirror to check your teeth and this tool here to clear away any unwanted plaque." I saw a single tear trickle down Bradley's face, so I gestured for Brendon to hurry up the procedure. The light switched on and pointed in a perfect shot, giving us a great view of Bradley's mouth. "Open up please" Brendon asked. Bradley obeyed and soon enough Brendon was searching and scratching at Bradley's teeth. I felt extremely sorry for the young man. I rubbed his shoulder comforting him, I think it helped. Brendon searched and scraped for around 5 minutes until he finished up, removing all tools from Bradley's mouth. He gave him a shot of water and soon enough Bradley was happy again. "You're very good at cleaning your teeth young man! Good job." We both applauded him and his cheek turned red. "Tell your parents to book you in for another 6 months." Brendon had to call out due to Bradley rushing down the corridor in search for his mum. "Kids are funny things" I joked, impersonating Bradley's run. Brendon laughed and we cleared up, ready for the next patient.
