CHAPTER 1
RHEA “What? Mate!” I felt my ears shatter at his words, my stomach contracting in pain, and I couldn’t fully process his words. “Yes, I’ve found my mate,” Lucien says. These five words destroyed me. It started as an innocent crush; then I fell in love with him. I’ve been looking forward to my eighteenth birthday because I wanted to be his mate; we were childhood sweethearts and best friends. Now he says he has found his mate. I stared at Lucien, willing the tears at the back of my eyes not to fall, I opened my mouth to utter a word of congratulations, yet I couldn’t. My lungs burned with each shallow breath I took. “I’m happy…. You found your mate,” I finally said, my nails digging into my palm, and I knew it drew blood. “She is the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen, Ree. You will like her,” Lucien said, his pale brown eyes dilating. I nodded. I wanted to run away from him, from this moment. “I wish our birthdays were on the same day, then we could have had our first shift together,” Lucien said excitedly. He looked sad at the thought that it wasn’t possible. I was suddenly grateful that he was born a few months before me because I wouldn’t have been able to survive it. “You’re so quiet today, Ree.” He looked at me worriedly, trying to grab my hands. I dodged, squeezing a smile and said, “I’m fine. I need to go,” I shook my head. I stood up, ready to leave. “The engagement party is tonight. You’ll be there, right?” Lucien gripped my arms, keeping me in place. The room became smaller, and I couldn’t breathe. “Sure.” Then I ran, like the devil chased me. A FEW HOURS LATER The party was in full swing, and I stood in a hidden corner where no one would see me as I watched Lucien and his mate stand in front of everyone with smiles on their faces. I had once imagined that it would be me, standing beside him. “Rhea, what are you doing? Are you hiding here?” My younger sister asked with a mocking smile. I stared at her with dislike, “I don’t think that’s any of your business, Zara?” “You think I don’t know about your one-sided love?” She laughed, her pretty face glowing. I widened my eyes in surprise, my hands fisting my white dress. “I peeked at your diary once. It’s a pity he found his mate,” she said to me with a cold look, her blonde hair shimmering in the light. She looked delighted at my suffering. I didn’t want to stay here and listen to her nonsense. Zara was always like this; she wouldn’t miss a chance to taunt like we weren’t blood-related. This was one of the moments I ask myself again. Are we really siblings? “Don’t think that I don’t know you also like him,” I exposed her too, my lips in a smirk. Who wouldn’t like Lucien Grey, the future Alpha of Grey town? He was not only handsome but kind and smart. “Hmmp… Don’t think everyone is like you,” she sneered, leaving. I inhaled deeply and walked to the garden. I was deeply familiar with the Alpha house; I lived here half the time as Lucien's best friend. It was the only time I was safe from my mother’s control and nagging. “Tap… tap…. Tap.” I turned towards the footsteps I heard behind me, a bit startled that someone would be here. It was a man. I gasped as I raised my head to look at the man with ample height who stood a distance away from me. Despite the dim light, I could see his broad shoulders and strong physique. He was tall, taller than anyone in Grey town. He must have noticed me because he stopped and looked at me. “Haah!” I inhaled, holding my breath. I came face to face with his piercing golden eyes, which were clear and bright in the dark, and I felt like running. I was hit with a wave of sheer dominance and power; my neck involuntarily bowed to submission. I have never felt such a presence like this; the urge to go down on my knees was overwhelming. Scared, my heart racing, my throat dry. I felt small. This wasn’t a human or a werewolf. Then the realization hit me. “Lycan,” I muttered, slapping my hand across my mouth. One second he was there, and the next he was standing before me. He was beautiful. I couldn’t take my eyes away from him; his golden olive skin glowed in the dark. He had the kind of beauty that left one mesmerized and intoxicated. Then his lips came crashing on mine, and his hands wrapped around my neck. I couldn’t think; it wasn’t what I expected. His taste filled my mouth; it was fire. I pushed and started struggling once I realized what was happening, but how could I overpower him? Yet, I melted into his body. Then his lips left mine. I took two wobbling steps away from him, my eyes red and watering. I could feel the sparks between us and felt uncomfortable. “Pak!” My hands acted before my thoughts, and I was horrified and could only stare at the golden-eyed, beautiful man. My scalp tingled in fear at his intense stare. “Mine,” he growled with such fierce possessiveness; his voice was deep and silky. It vibrated through my being and left me shaking. I met his eyes, and what I saw in them left me breathless. He smelled clean and like tobacco, but I could still distinguish the faint scent that belonged to him. It was rich and dark. Something urged me to get closer to him, but I resisted, whimpering. “What’s going on?” Lucien asked, walking towards us. His words cut the terrifying electricity between us, and I heaved a sigh of relief from the Lycan’s overbearing aura. My head whipped so fast to look at him, and I felt guilty for whatever reason; it wasn’t like he was mine. “Brother. I knew I smelt you.” “What! Brother?” I spluttered, looking between the two men. I could see Lucien bow his head a bit, which was weird as he was an Alpha. Since I knew Lucien, I haven’t heard him mention his brother. And his brother was a Lycan. That was impossible, or so I thought. “Lucien, you’ve grown taller,” the handsome man said, patting Lucien’s back. His overpowering aura was drawn back. Lucien smiled widely like a little boy. “I see you’ve met Rhea; she is my best friend.” “Rhea,” he muttered, like he was savoring my name. His eyes on me felt like he was going to swallow me whole. His eyes were dark, and he licked his lips like he was holding back something. “Yes,” he nodded. “Rhea, this is my brother Damon.” So that was his name, but why had he kissed me? Also, were we going to ignore the elephant in the room? A Lycan who is the brother of a werewolf. “It’s a pleasure meeting you, Rhea,” he said, taking my hands and placing a kiss on my wrist. I shivered, my n*****s became pebbled, and I blushed in shame. Did he think we were in medieval times? It definitely wasn’t a pleasure meeting him. Something about him scared the crap out of me. “Why don’t I introduce you to my mate?” Lucien said happily to Damon. I felt down again. “Right, Ree, you also haven’t met Olivia officially. Why don’t we go together?” I had no choice but to walk ahead of both brothers. I could feel Damon's eyes on my back as I walked, strange how I knew it was him. For a moment, I forgot how to walk. Lucien began introducing everyone as soon as we got inside. Olivia was exactly as he described, sweet and pretty. I couldn’t even get angry. I could feel the change in the room as soon as Damon walked in, my pack members lowering their heads in submission, and even my Alpha had a tough time keeping his head straight. “Look who came,” Alpha George said in a cold and mocking voice. The room focused on him and the man he was addressing. He was Lucien's dad and the Alpha of Grey town. The air became tense, and my scalp tingled from the clash between Damon and the Alpha. I took a step backward, hiding away from it. “Father, I invited my brother to my engagement,” Lucien quickly clarified, his eyes blank as he looked between his father and his brother. Damon sneered and didn’t say anything, but I didn’t expect his tongue to be thoroughly wicked. “If it isn’t the leftover Alpha,” Damon opened his mouth, and a cold burst out from within him, chilling the hearts of everyone. “Bastard Prince!” A follower of the Alpha cursed. It was a sentinel, one of the pack warriors. It all happened suddenly. One moment the sentinel was standing, and the next he was on his knees, holding his head as blood flowed from all orifices. He slumped dead. The hall went silent. I opened my mouth in shock; it took an effort to close it back, but one thing I was certain of was that this Lycan was too dangerous. **** That night, as I closed my eyes in deep slumber, I had a dream. It wasn’t a scary one, yet it filled me with fear and uncertain feelings. I could feel a hand trailing my body, my hair standing up as I felt goosebumps erupting all over my body. The claws touched my hollowed collarbone, feather light, making me shiver. My breath hitched, my chest heaving as low heat filled my tummy. The cold wind made me tremble despite the heat from his touch. Then it passed my n*****s, the pink tip hard and proud. I wanted to wake up, but I couldn’t, my eyelashes fluttered from time to time. My throat felt dry. It moved lower, trailing my flat stomach. My stomach quivered in excitement, my body slick with sweat. Then it touched my waist and hip. I gasped at the strange feeling that filled my body, especially below, in between my thighs. I felt like I was about to die from the heat. “Hng,” my mouth let out an embarrassing noise when the hands touched my thighs, and I reacted fiercely in fear. In those split seconds my eyes were open, I saw bright yellow eyes. I woke up gasping for air, shivering, my body wet from sweat, and down there burned like never before. It was almost like I was sick. I felt feverish. My hands moved to my lips, struggling, then I touched my breast, pinching my hard n*****s. “Mngg,” I gasped from the pleasure I felt. It was maddening and frustrating. “Ahhh,” I groaned, pulling my bed covers over my aching body.
