Chapter1
Nora SEATTLE
"27th, that is your number; make sure to go in when called." The attendant spoke, and I smiled at them. Coming into this city, I would be far away from them, and no one would ever be able to track me down again.
Flashback
"Who is to offer to them? Why did they set their eyes on us" I heard her say. I could feel the anxiousness in her voice. I can't help but wonder what happened for her to be this anxious.
"The only person to offer is Nora if we do not want to lose our minds." My stepfather, Robert Shawn, said he would always hate me because I never let him touch my body.
"But she would never agree, and I do not want to drag her into it," I heard my mother say, trying to protect me. Only then did I realise what the problem was: Hardin Tanks was the richest man in the city, but he had many wives, all of whom had gone missing.
"So what are you planning to offer Freya? You know I will never allow that," Robert said, making me tremble. My mother had never fought him before, and I was worried she would agree to his terms.
"Fine..." I heard her admit defeat: my mother would never want to lose her husband because of me, and she would never take the risk.
I had always assumed that if I did not throw a tantrum or ask for anything, I would be loved. I had been taught that it was my fault, but was it truly mine?
They call me a pig they feed, refuse to acknowledge me as their daughter, and spare no thought of sending me to the lion's den.
I shed a tear as I remembered how nice my mother was to me before she married him. I was genuinely happy for her, but he always put me last in everything, and my mother could never risk her marriage.
"Who is that?" When I heard his voice, I quickly rose to my feet and dashed to my room; I could not let him discover me because he might tie me up and keep me there until the wedding day.
"Are you in there? I heard Freya's voice from inside, and I desperately wanted to respond, but I couldn't. She stood there for a while before barging the door open.
"What is wrong?" She inquired, slowly walking to my side, rolled up like a burrito. She was the only one who cared about me, or so I assumed.
"They want to marry me off" I said more tears falling out of my eyes, I didn't want to say anything to her because she has always been favoured by her father but I couldn't help it I had no one else to talk to,she petted my back as I cried unto her arms.
Freya raised my face up to her."They want to marry you off to Hardin?" She asked, it was like she had read my mind.
"Yes,the youngest billionaire in town,Hunter and also the suspected mafia boss" I said, sniffing in my tears awaiting Freya's response.
"That is a good thing,he isn't too old for you and he is the richest person in town. I am even kind of jealous they didn't leave that opportunity to me," She said.
"I don't think you know him Freya"
"It is said that after spending a day with anyone they would disappear into thin air, they said he has a gang but they didn't arrest because he is rich," I said I know it was a rumour but I still choose to believe it.
"Those are just rumours, Nora he is actually a good man," she said with a huge smile. I felt like she was the one who was sent to change my mind but there was no way I would get married to him.
"Okay, if you don't want to get married to him I have another idea." She said and pulled me closer whispering into my ear.
"Will that work?" I asked, unsure of what I just heard."Moreover, who will I stay with if I eventually do that?" I asked again, the plan just seemed to have too many loopholes.
"Don't worry,I will have it all sorted out" she said with an assuring smile. I didn't know but she seemed very reliable to me.
Freya eventually helped me to get out of the country and I lived with Hunter, my friend for over three months without finding a job but I had finally found one now.
"Ma'am it's your turn" I smiled and got up slowly. As I heard her voice I smiled and reassured myself once more that I would get the job. I took my file with me and gave it to the manager as I got in.
"What makes you think you deserve this job?" The manager asked, honestly I had not prepared much of an answer for this one.
"As you can see in my file, I have experience in some jobs like that and I have great communication skills actually" I said and he closed my file. I just knew deep down that this was going to be a failure from him to me. It was just too obvious that was a wrong answer to give in an interview.
"We will...." He stopped his sentence as someone came and whispered into his heart I saw him nodding before he got up and said "You are hired"
The shock was really evident on my face as I smiled happily and shook his hand. Though I was excited about getting a job, it just seemed suspicious.
"You can start the job on Monday" he said and I smiled. I took up my files and walked back home. I didn't meet Hunter at home actually but I made dinner for him and lit the place up.
I heard the doorbell ring. The door opened up slowly,he took off his shoes and went up to his room.
"Why the occasion?" I heard his whisper behind my ear . He just had that habit of creeping up on someone.
"I would love to announce to you that I got a job," I said proudly. I was expecting the claps but all I got from him was a stare. He seemed not to believe what I told him.
"What is wrong, you are not happy that I got a job?" I asked It was also very shocking to me that I got the job but he at least be happy for me
He shook his head negatively. "Of course I am happy for you but you actually got a job with that CV? Isn't that suspicious?" He asked and I rolled my eyes
"So you are saying that I am not good enough for a job right?" I asked and he quickly shook his head again. He really didn't want me to misunderstand him.
"No that is not what I was implying I just want to make sure that you are safe." He said and I smiled, he was back at acting like I was my dad again.
"I am no longer a kid, I can take care of myself and my safety" I said with a safe patt on his shoulder.
He chuckled and said "let me taste your cooking." I smiled also and saved the food until his plate by the next he got up to go to work I would be trailing behind hi
m the thought of it just made me happy.
