Cassidy's POV
“Dave must be losing his mind back there?” an amused smile formed on Nova's face as he looked back towards the party and then, me and my child. “Surprising him that way… that was crazy. Even I didn't see that coming.” A light chuckle fell out his lips.
“I bet you didn't.” I said dryly. “I need to leave now. I have a flight to catch tomorrow. Nice meeting you here.“ I told him before I turned to leave with my son.
“Wait!” Nova held my arm to stop me. I turned to face him, wondering what was wrong with him.
“ When can we see next, huh?” Nova asked, his voice came out desperate. “It's been so long since we last saw each other. Come, let me buy you a drink. We can talk and have fun.”
“I have to put Ryan in bed.” I said as I looked down at my precious baby boy. “Thank you for the offer though. I will hold you to it when I next visit Nashville.”
“Why wait until next time? You can have your driver take Ryan home and tuck him in.” He suggested, making a frown form on my head.
“There is no way I would do that.” I said sternly. It was bad enough that Ryan didn't have a father figure in his life. If I started leaving him with other people to take care of my baby…. I could not complete that thought. It hurt too much too. With Ryan in my arms, I left for the parking lot, where my driver was waiting for me.
I had already gotten into the car when I saw Dave come out from the party. My car had already begun to move when his eyes darted towards mine. I looked away from him as the car drove past him. When I said he was dead to me, I meant it.
Few hours later, after I had tucked Ryan in bed, I was making myself a cup of warm milk and honey to help me sleep. That was when Ivan walked into the kitchen. We were in a mansion our family owned in Nashville.
“Make me a cup, will you?” He asked as he sat on a stool on the other side of the island. While I was getting him his cup of milk and honey, I heard him ask. “ How was the party? Did you see him?”
“See who?” I asked, feigning ignorance.
“ You know who I'm talking about, Cassie bear.” Ivan said as I handed him his cup.
“ If you're talking about my ex husband, yes, he was there at the party. He made a fuss and that was it.” I said before taking a sip.
“ Is that all?” I know he wanted the whole gist but I wasn't up for it. I wanted to finish my drink and sleep.
“ Yes, Ivan. That's all. I don't want to talk about him, right now.” I tried my best not to remember the look in Dave's eyes but every time my mind wandered for a second, it would bring back the memories of him asking for another chance.
Then, I would always make sure to remember how he had treated me the last time I was in Nashville. Whenever I remembered the pain I felt, my focus on getting back at him would stay firm.
“Alright, I understand.” Ivan said before finishing his drink. “Our flight leaves by twelve tomorrow. Goodnight Cassie bear.” he kissed him on the forehead before leaving for his room.
I was left alone with my thoughts. Aside from getting back at Dave, my priority was to give my baby a future, be the father and mother he needs. Just while I was lost in my thoughts, I received a call from my personal assistant.
“ Good evening, ma'am.” She greeted me on the other side of the call the minute I picked it. Her tone was too polite so I knew something was wrong. She was always extra polite whenever she wanted to deliver bad news.
“What is it?” I didn't have time to waste. I could already feel the effects of the drink in my body, making me sleepy.
“ The project your grandfather was handling here in Nashville is having major problems. It is something you need to see for yourself. The crisis management team has been working on it all day but it has only gotten worse.” She explained.
“Schedule a meeting with the team tomorrow morning, as early as seven thirty.” I told her before hanging up. I was feeling too sleepy to inquire more about the issue.
The following day, I groomed Ryan and left him with his uncle before going for the meeting. I needed to tackle whatever issue before leaving by noon. Thankfully, there were maids to help with packing up our luggage.
“ Be a good boy for mummy, Ryan and no rough play.” I told my boy sternly before showering him with a lot of kisses on his face. That made him giggle before he said.
“Yes mummy.”
Looking at Ivan, he immediately raised both his hands in surrender. He was always the one encouraging Ryan to play outrageous games. I wanted to tell him to take care of Ryan but he beat me to it.
“I know, Cassie bear. I'll take care of him. When have I ever put him in harm's way?” He asked and I responded without missing a beat.
“Remember that time you decided Ryan was going to be spiderman? Remember how he ended up climbing the big front gate only to get his head stuck between the iron bars?” The memory of that incident still terrified me. That day I thought I would lose my son. Who said raising a boy was easy? To make things worse, my brother kept letting him have “fun”. “Should I remind you of the other time—” Ivan didn't let me finish.
With his hands still up like he'd surrendered, he said. “I remember. Don't worry. This time he'll be safe. Just come back before our flight leaves us.”
“I will. See you soon, baby.” I waved at Ryan before leaving. Getting to the company branch in Nashville, I was struck by a nostalgic feeling. The last time I had been there was when my grandfather was alive. He would take me with him to the company to show me off and get me acquainted. Who knew all that visits would come in handy.
“Good morning, ma'am.” My personal assistant greeted me the minute I was in the company's premises. Instead of standing there and listening, I figured I could keep walking into the building and listen.
“ As scheduled, you have a meeting in the conference room with the crisis management team and a flight to take by noon.” She reminded me.
“I know.” I muttered before taking the elevator up. The elevator led to the conference room where a group of people were already seated in.
Pushing the door open, I walked into the room and was greeted by the team. “Good morning, ma'am.”
One of them, a man, seemed to be their leader. “Thank you for taking your time to see us.” He said and offered a handshake. I looked at his hand uninterested in shaking it.
“Tell me, what is the issue you're facing with the project? Give me the details. “ I went straight to the point. Quickly, my personal assistant handed me a file. I went through the file to understand the problem. I had not gotten past a page when I saw Nelson ltd. In the report.
“Do we have any problem with Nelson ltd?” I asked. “Give me a summary of the situation.” I said before taking my seat with my assistant beside me.
“ Good morning, everyone. Good morning ma'am. I am Theo Dunson.” Another member of the team stood up. “ I will be giving an overview of our current crisis with the Nashville PayTon mall project.” He started. “The project is supposed to enable us to build a mall very close to the center of Nashville and also provide our processed meal and other items to the public. For more than three years now, the project has been going smoothly but the CEO of Nelson ltd. claimed that a part of the land we use for construction is his. Surprisingly, he provided a document that proved it. “
“Then, what's the problem? Just negotiate with their team. I am sure an agreement can be reached.” I proposed but even I knew, it wouldn’t be that simple. The Nelson ltd. was their rival and they would do anything to slow down our project.
“We have tried negotiating with him but he has refused any form of compensation.” The team leader explained. “That is the problem. If he refuses any form of compensation, we would have to demolish a part of the mall to give him back his land. Not only that, we would also have to redesign the project and adjust it quickly before our opening date in two months time. “
“ Oh, I see.” I murmured under my breath. Considering my not-so-good past with my ex husband, Dave Nelson, I had a feeling he was up to something I wouldn't like.
