CHAPTER 25
From the time they fell in love, Veronica no longer allowed Douglas to approach her. Since the reason she was there was to be a prisoner, then there was no reason to nurture that passion. She would try to behave well until the end of that sweet torment, but she would not allow any more bond between them. She was sure it was the best thing for her and she would do it without flinching.
One afternoon, when Douglas came up and offered her fruit juice, Veronica accepted, thanking him for the relief from the heat of those days, and moved away to the other end of the house to keep the distance she was willing to have.
