Elise's POV.
I looked back to see who was at the door.
"Jones." I gasped and darted my gaze at Adaline who had a frown on her face.
"How can you refer to me as 'a man' like you don't know my name!" Jones scolded her and glared.
They both glared at each other like they had argued before or they probably did and I failed to notice.
"What's wrong with the both of you?" I asked, curiously staring at them. "Did you quarrel?"
"No." Jones shook his head.
"That's a lie. We argued because he did something mean to me." Adaline raised her voice while pointing accusingly at him.
I had never heard Adaline yell before. He must have upset her.
"What did he do to you? Did he court you and go after another woman?" My assumption wasn't out of place because Jones wasn't a young man anymore.
Jones was in his late thirties when I met him and now, he's almost forty forty-four. I wanted to call him my uncle when we first met but he claimed he was too young for that.
He might be a few years younger than Adaline but she was a really beautiful woman and was also single.
"No! How can you think of something like that? I'm too young to be dating a woman so old." That came out rather offensive but I guess he did it purposely to piss Adaline off.
"So old? I am just forty-five but I look younger than you. You look like my grandfather, so stop being so full of yourself. It's irritating!" She yelled at him. "And anyway, I don't date men who act like a 'man child', so rude and…and arrogant!"
"I am rude and arrogant because I have something good to boast of. You have no children, no husband, no grandkids, and most especially no money. You're just one old hag, left to live and die with nothing!" Jones yelled.
I didn't expect him to say those hurtful words but I could see the pain that crossed Adaline's eyes.
I had to stand up and intervene to stop things from escalating more than they should.
"I don't like where this is going, please let's calm down," I muttered softly, trying to ease the tension between them.
"Yes, I'm all alone." Adaline said, patting her chest gently. "I'm alone because I lost my husband and three kids in a fatal accident and had my whole wealth ripped off my hands by his family. So you're right. I'm gonna die with nothing!"
My hands flew to my lips as I heard her words. She must have felt so hurt while suffering those losses and she was still hurt because they had left an impact on her life.
I watched how tears filled her eyes but she excused herself before they could fall off her eyes.
I folded my arms to my chest and stared at Jones in disbelief. "You owe her an apology," I muttered.
He sighed and walked to me.
"I never knew those things happened to her, she kept blabbering and I didn't have anything else to hurt her with."
"What exactly did you do to her? Adaline doesn't look like someone who would get angry so easily," I asked, waiting for an explanation that would justify his reaction.
He opened his mouth to speak but later closed it back.
"Jones, I'm waiting…"
"Alright. Yesterday, she was in the kitchen making a cake and I watched her doing everything but I went to the bathroom for a while and since she wasn't there on my return, I decided to check the cake…" He paused.
"So, you ruined the design of the cake and refused to apologize for it?" I asked, guessing the remaining part of the narration.
"Yes." He sighed and lowered his gaze.
I huffed and my hand exasperatedly went to my forehead.
"Jones, I thought you were more mature than this. What happened to you? You were at fault and should have apologized but now, you've reminded her of her hurtful past. That's so mean of you." I shook my head disappointedly at him and sat back on the couch.
"Yeah," He sighed and faced me. "The cleaning service will be coming in on Sunday. During that Sunday, we could go to one of your private islands. We could have some fun there."
I nodded in agreement and smiled at him. "That's not a bad idea. I would love to spend time with my daughter."
"Cool." He returned the smile and walked through the door.
"Won't you apologize to her?" I asked, glaring at him.
"Not now, she's probably too angry to listen to me," Jones replied and continued walking away.

Later, I went to meet Adaline and she had calmed down by then.
But I was still concerned because it looked like she had been crying for a long while. Her eyes were reddened and puffy, and her bottom lip was a little too red, probably from biting it constantly to prevent loud sobs.
Her vein was pulsing close to her eyebrow. It wasn't obvious before but the cry had triggered its display.
"Adaline, he didn't mean what he said. Jones can be a little immature and resentful. I'm not here to make excuses for him. I just want to apologize on his behalf." I muttered and sauntered to the counter.
Adaline sniffed and nodded gently. "I'm not angry at him. I'm just sad that my life has turned out this way."
I sighed and reached for her hand as I got closer. "Your reality is sad but you can make yourself happy. I'm sorry about everything that happened to you but I want to tell you that you're a survivor and I'm proud of you."
A smile formed on her lips; "Thank you so much ma'am, that's the nicest thing anyone has said to me."
I smiled at her and caressed her hand with my thumb.
"It's my pleasure," I said softly.
"Where is Natalie?" She asked and wiped the tears that slipped on her cheeks.
"She's upstairs, angry about something," I said and a little smile appeared on my lips.
Adaline nodded and stood up from the chair. "I should meet her."
"Alright, please tell her that I love her." Adaline nodded and left me alone in the kitchen.
I was about to leave the kitchen as well when I received a call from someone.
'Hello.'
'Miss Claw, there's a way for us to enter Sinclair fashion company.' My private investigator said.
'How?'
'Mr Sinclair needs a secretary. I'm going to be sending the best of the best there and let's see if he will fall prey…' He replied.
A satisfied smile appeared on my lips. Damien will soon be disgraced and become a villain in the eyes of those who thought he was a victim.
'Good. I want her to dig up whatever dirt she can find. I want this done within weeks. I want to have him sleeping on the streets and picking food from the trash while thinking about all the damage he has done.' I said and a cold smirk on my lips.
