At three o’clock in the morning Detective Inspector Hawkins returned to the manor with the news they had been waiting for.
“We’ve arrested the owner of the van, and he happens to be in the employ of Mr Clayton. We’re now certain he has Mrs Flowers. We’ve recovered some CCTV from outside the Riverside Club, time-stamped approximately half past two in the morning. It clearly shows the van speeding away from the village in the direction of Bears Bridge. We’ve gone as far as we can with the footage, it’s fairly remote around here and we don’t expect to get anything else on that front.”
