Day One
We all start with a bang, right? Typically everyone’s day is the day they come out seeing the light, and screaming their heads off. Not mine. Mine starts only nine months prior.
My mom was mourning the death of her fiancé. The love of her life, cut short, and only two weeks before their wedding day. He was diabetic and in order to pay for my mothers dream wedding he stopped taking his insulin. Not the best move. Her way of copping was alcohol, and lots of it. She was partying night and day. All while casually seeing a man.
You might be thinking, “damn, when is she going to get to the point?” Hold on, I’m getting there.
One night in late May, 1996, my mother sleeps with someone. Not expecting the outcome that would be. Fast forward four months, my mother starts to get sick and has a appointment with her doctor. Of course, the outcome was that she was pregnant. Far enough along in the pregnancy that she was surprised with a pair of pink booties.
Sheer terror fills my mothers brain. She’s across the country from any of her family, she has a 16 year old daughter, and no idea who the father is.
