Austin POV
It felt like a life time was passing by as my brothers and I sat through another boring Council meeting. They droned on and on about financial issues pertaining to a few packs and the rogue attacks on other packs within the kingdom. It was their job to see that we make sure we are doing our duties as heirs to the throne. Well, one of us at least.
"Austin..." I hadn't realized I started dozing off until I heard my name. I sat up quickly in my chair, adjusted my clothes and cleared my throat. My brother's both snickered at my response.
"Yes, Council?"
"You realize you need to start searching for a chosen mate. Being the first born, you will be crowned king, within a few years." One of the older Coucilmen said sternly.
"I am well aware of the traditions and wishes of the council. I know that taking a chosen mate now, solidifies the position for future queen. However, I still have 4 years to find her. In that time frame, I may be lucky and the Moon Goddess may give me my fated. There is no need to rush this. Furthermore, my brothers and I will be ruling this Kingdom as one. I will not be the only crowned king." I answered back as formally as I could. I gave a knowing look at my brothers and they both smiled and nodded at me in return. We had planned this many years ago as this would be the right decision for us in moving this kingdom forward.
The Councilman huffed, not pleased with my answer and looked to the other members for support. This wasn't the first time I was told to find my mate, and I knew it wasn't the last of it.
"We can make a list of the most eligible shewolves if it would help you choose." Another Councilman spoke up. I rolled my eyes. They didn't hear a word I said and I was starting to get fed up with it.
"I'm pretty sure my brother just said he is in no rush to find his mate. In fact, I'm sure he is looking for his fated more than a chosen" Darius chimed in, looking rather bored at this subject. He looked up at the Counsil and sighed. "Another fact, my brothers and I will be taking our time to find our mates. We have 4 years before you can start demanding us to find someone to occupy our beds. Now, at this time, we have nothing further to discuss. We will be taking our leave now."
I could always rely on Darius to cut to the chase. The council looked among each other and mumbled a bit of things before they nodded at us.
"Ladies, Gentlemen." I stood up and nodded solemnly to them. A few stood and bowed, the others just nodded.
My brother's and I headed out of the chambers. I sighed and ran hands through my hair. I looked out the window in the hallway we were standing in and sighed once more. It was raining out. So much for going for a run to relieve stress.
"We could still go"
"Don't need to smell like wet dog" I said to my wolf, Fallon. He gruffed at me and went silent. I knew he was itching to get out and run. It's been over a week since I let him out.
"Well, that was counter productive and a waste of time" Shane said as he folded his arms across his chest.
"We know where most of the rogue attacks are." Said Darius, looking out the same window I was.
"We can send some of our men to help them out since they are smaller packs." Shane suggested.
"Sounds like a good idea. Let Markus know so that he can pick some of the better men to possibly relocate them, I they wish. If they have families within the kingdom, they may want to follow." I said.
"Damn, this rain is coming down in buckets." Daruis grumbled softly. I nodded and sighed.
"I wanted to let Fallon out. He needs a good run, but not in this." Fallon whimpered in my mind as I placed my hands on my hips.
"Got a date for the Mate Ball?" Shane nudged me with a smile.
"Nah, I don't want to bring someone, get their head full of hope and ideas, only for one of us to be met with our fated." I chuckled softly.
"You're really set on that fated thing, aren't you?" Darius glanced over at me.
"And you're not?" I raised an eyebrow at him.
"I'm not getting my hopes up." He said rather quickly.
Last Mate Ball, Darius brought his girlfriend of 7 years. they had spent almost the whole evening together. That was until she met her fated. It crushed him. Since then, he has been cold to the idea of being in a relationship.
"You might find her this year." I said as I placed a hand on his shoulder. "Don't give up. The Moon Goddess knows what she is doing." I smiled.
"Easy for you to say." He said before he pushed past me and walked off and out the door. I watched him run through the rain to his SUV and get in. I sighed heavily and looked over at Shane.
"Give him time. Last year was hard." Shane said.
"I know. We both felt it. I just wish I could heal his heart." I admitted softly before making my way to the door. "I'll see you at dinner tonight" I said before stepping out into the pouring rain.
