Chapter 9: Phillip POV

Chapter 9: Phillip POV Ever since I rejected my last chosen mate I've been trying to decide who to pursue next. I have always had a string of lovers vying for my affections and the position as my Luna. None of those sluts was good enough to be Luna. I needed someone pure, unused, preferably someone of Alpha blood like myself. I was walking through campus one day when I realized I knew someone like that, someone pure and Alpha. She was a runt, sure, but she was very beautiful. Her own mother was a runt and she had proven herself a very successful Luna. I had been half-heartedly pursuing her but decided I needed to go full force. I linked my Beta, Henry, to get all the information possible on Lily, daughter of Alpha Nathan and Luna Willa. I knew a little from my interactions with her over the years at pack events and our study groups but I needed more. She was unmated and unmarked. I knew that much. It wasn't difficult to smell the innocence radiating off of her. "Alpha, I have interesting information for you about Lily," Henry linked to me. "Tell me," I said, intrigued. "She and her sisters are turning 18 this Saturday. They are having a large birthday party at their pack estate." I cursed under my breath. That didn't give me much time. I needed to mark her before she realized we weren't Fated. A girl as pure as Lily definitely believes in Fated Mates. "Where is she now?" I linked to him. He told me her class schedule and I made my way to the Science Building. I needed to fake an accidental meeting. I found her stumbling outside. She didn't look like she felt well. I was about to greet her when she ran directly into my chest and crumpled to the ground. I was genuinely concerned when I picked her up off the ground. "Whoa! Lily, you okay?" She was barely conscious. "Lily, hey, Lily, wake up!" She wasn't waking up. I pulled my water bottle out of my bag and put it to her lips. Her guard was standing over us. "I'm Alpha Phillip, ally pack. I got her," I told him. He watched my every move with scrutiny. After a few sips her eyes fluttered. She looked up at us. She seemed a little disoriented. Suddenly her guard told her he had linked her father and that he was taking her home. She was reluctant and told him she needed to go to class. I suggested that I escort her to her next class. I offered her a smile and my hand. She blushed as she accepted it. The guard went into the classroom with her as usual. I waited outside. When she appeared 45 minutes later I had my speech ready. It was all planned out. As we walked to the car lot I tried to coax her into a date. "Come on, Lily, let's go hang out somewhere," I said smiling at her innocent green eyes. She looked down and said, "No, that's okay, Phillip. I really should get home." I felt the edges of my lips twitch. She was really making me work for it. I appreciate the challenge. I put on my fake hurt face and said, "Come on, tomorrow you'll find out we are mates anyway. Why can't we spend time together now?" She froze on the sidewalk and stared up at me. I was at least a foot taller than her. "Lily, I'm 19. I've felt the mate bond pulling me to you for a long time. I've been trying to act patient and polite but I can't take this anymore. Can't we just be mates already?" I gave her a pleading look with my eyes, my mouth pouting. I watched as her eyes widened and her breath hitched. "You-you-you're my mate?" She was stuttering. How cute. I nodded to her question. "Yes, Mate. I have been waiting for your 18th birthday. I thought it better Nature tell you but I can't wait that long. I've been holding back and loving you from afar for far too long." Her eyes flickered and then glazed over as if she was speaking to her wolf. "I-I-I don't know what to say, Phillip." I smiled, "Say you'll go on a date with me?" She blushed and nodded. "I need my parent's permission first. Daddy is really traditional. He would cancel my party tomorrow if he found out." I chuckled, "Mindlink him and let him know your guard is welcome to join us." She sighed, possibly out of relief, and mind-linked her father. This was too damn easy, I laughed internally. "Not mate," my wolf linked to me. "Shut up. She is my chosen mate. She is the best option. We need a Luna." He growled at me and blocked me out. My wolf and I rarely agreed on much. "He said okay as long as Paul chaperones. Is that okay?" Her big eyes looked at me with concern. I nodded, "Of course, Kitten. Let's go get some dinner." I led her to my car. Henry was behind the wheel. I put her into the back seat with me and told her guard to ride upfront with my Beta. We ate at an Italian restaurant near campus. Henry and the guard named Paul were at a table on the other side watching us. Paul seemed to monitor her every move as if he was anticipating danger. Why? Lily was telling me about her new sister-in-law when she suddenly got a far off look in her eyes. The light in her eyes returned and her demeanor changed. "Phillip, please excuse me while I go to the ladies room." I tried to follow but she told me to wait for her at the table. Of course Paul followed to stand guard outside the restroom. Several minutes passed. I was getting angry. I gave into my annoyance and went to the ladies room. I banged on the door. "Lily!" Paul tried to interfere. He yelled to Lily to stay where she is. I pulled on the handle only to find it locked. "What the f**k is going on, Lily?! Mates don't hide from each other!" Paul told me to back off. "Miss Lily is having a panic attack and needs to recover. I need for you to stand down." My rage only increased. Who the hell was he tell me to stand down? I was getting ready to make a scene when Lily finally emerged from the bathroom. She looked pale and sickly. I led her back to our table but she didn't look like she was enjoying herself anymore. "What happened? Are you okay?" She sniffed back some tears as she said, "Something doesn't feel right. I need to go home." I felt my whole face twitch. My plan was being ruined by my own prey. I tried my best to smile and offered to take her home later. Without warning her brother and the human who always follows her around came into the restaurant. What the hell?! "Good evening." They looked from me down to Lily. She was twisting her fingers in her lap. She looked nervous. "I-I-I don't feel well. Can we please go home?" I felt my anger boiling inside me. What happened? Why would she flee from our date? I grabbed her wrist as she tried to get up to leave the table. "Lily, are you sure you don't want to stay? I could drive you home." I asked, gripping her wrist. She looked at me with panic. "P-p-please let go. I need to go h-h-home." I was about to tell her mates don't run away from each other but Daniel pulled her away from my grip and linked me to back off. I growled but allowed them to leave. The human put his arm around her shoulder as they exited and I felt my body shake with anger. They ruined my plan to mark her before midnight. I will have to try again tomorrow at the party.
