CHAPTER 2

727 Words
ADRIAN'S POV~ The library was the only place in West Bridge where people knew how to mind their own business. I turned to another page in my book, and my mind drifted to my new seatmate, Maya Bennett. She is different; most students stopped talking to me on their first attempt. But she ... The corner of my lips tugged into a smile. "Adrian." I looked up; it was Noah, my best friend. "What did you want this time?" I asked, looking at my book. "I've been standing here for over five minutes," he said, sitting on the chair across from me. "I noticed you were smiling; you must be thinking about Maya," he said teasingly. I looked up, raising my book about to hit him. "Fine, fine.." he laughed, raising his hand. A few students looked in our direction and quickly looked away. "But you shouldn't be cold around her; she is a newbie." The bell rang for break over. "Let's go back to class," I said, standing up. ******************************************* Maya's POV Vennessa looked at me with a disdainful look. She walked towards me with her minion. "Hey, new girl," she said. I looked at her for a moment. "Hi," I replied. "Don't get too comfortable around Adrian," she said. "Like, seriously," I said. "Who..." I was about to say, but Sophie stopped me. "Maya," she said. I looked at her. She gave me the look, saying, "Don't say anything." The bell rang for break over, and I walked out of the cafeteria. "Vennessa is cunning, and I don't want her to do anything stupid to you," Sophie said as we were walking back to the class. "What can she possibly do to me? I really hate people like her," I said. "You just have to be careful," she said. We reached our classroom. "See you later," she said as she walked to her seat. Adrian was already in his seat when I got back to class, still with a book. I sat down and stared at him for a moment. "What else does he even do?" I wondered. Study, ignore people. How did he manage to become the most popular guy in school? I noticed he looked at me out of the corner of his eye. Pretending not to notice me, huh. I shook my head and brought out my notebook. Slowly, the class was filled with students' conversations from different corners, but Adrian was unbothered by it. " Don't you ever get tired of reading?" I asked cause I couldn't stop myself. " No". Finally, he said a word. " Then you must be fun at parties." I saw his lips twitch. "I don't do parties." I stared at him, and he stared back. He returned to his book I laughed slightly. I noticed Vennessa watching us. She looked at me with a flicker of annoyance. It was a look that suggested I had overstepped some unspoken boundaries. The classroom door opened; Mrs Foster walked in "Good afternoon, everyone." "Good afternoon, Mrs. Foster. She began explaining an assignment she wanted us to complete before the end of the week. Suddenly I found myself glancing at Adrian. Not because I liked him; I was just curious why a popular guy like him wasn't loud and surrounded by friends. Popular students loved attention. But he was the complete opposite; somehow, everyone talked about him, and they were scared of him. Even Venessa was obsessed with him. Speaking of Vennessa, I glanced across the room. She was staring in our direction again. I rolled my eyes and looked away. The rest of the lesson passed surprisingly fast. The final bell rang. Students immediately started packing their bags. I was putting my notebook into my backpack when a girl approached Adrian and gave him a folded piece of paper. Was that a love letter? Adrian threw the note in the tray bin behind his desk without even looking at it Wow, did he just do that? The girl looked embarrassed and left. Adrian didn't seem to care. He zipped up his bag and stood. "That was rude I said, silently but loud enough for him to hear. He looked at me and walked out of his class. I watched him as he left the class, shaking my head. Adrian Cole was the most confusing person I've ever met.
