CHAPTER 3

870 Words
MAYA'S POV I got home feeling exhausted from the first day drama. "Mum!" I called her "Maya, you are home", she said from the kitchen. I could perceive the aroma of the food she was cooking as I walked towards the dining room. I dropped my backpack and brought out a chair to sit. My mum came out with two plates and placed one in front of me. "Thanks, Mum," I said, smiling. " You're welcome", she said and sat across me. "So how was your first day?" "Not bad", I said as I took a bite from the food ", at least." "Found a new job?" I asked her. "Not yet", she said. She looked down at her plate "Not yet ", she said. "I'm sorry", I said, looking down. " You don't have to be", she said, holding my hand. " I'll find a new job sooner or later", she said. "But..." "No buts. I'm thinking of taking a remote job. I hope it gets approved," she said. "For a moment, I thought about how Mum shouldered every responsibility. She has been doing everything on her own as far as I can remember. I hate to see Mum struggle Dad died when I was three. I didn't really have many memories of him. "I'll be fine " I smiled faintly "Tell me about the new school. Have you made any friends yet ?" she asked. "Yes, her name is Sophie. She is cool, though." " You have to be careful ", Mum said. " I promise " ******************************************* ADRIAN'S POV By the time I got home, the sun was almost set. I saw my father's car parked in the garage. I knew today wasn't going to be normal again. I had already gotten used to it anyway. I got to the living room. "Where are you coming from?" he said, staring at his phone "School closes by three" "I stayed behind" "For what?" I didn't respond. "You are going to inherit the company soon; is this how you will continue to behave?" He yelled at me. "Only if Ethan were here", he said. The room went silent. I clenched my fist and looked at him. "Don't bring Ethan into this" "Why shouldn't I? Are you trying to escape the fact that you killed him" "I didn't kill him" A sharp slap landed across my face; for a moment, I was stunned "Please stop" My mum's voice broke through the silence. She hurried towards me and held me "He is your son," she said, looking at my father. " My son is dead", he glared at her. " That's enough", my mum said, tears in her eyes. "Are you okay?" she asked, touching my cheek. " I'm fine" I pulled away and walked to my room. I closed the door and leaned against it. Somehow the word didn't hurt me; it was something I heard regularly. I changed into another outfit and went out. ******************************************* MAYA'S POV The next morning I arrived at school earlier. The hallway was unusually crowded "Maya" I could hear Sophie's voice as she was running towards me. "Thank goodness you came early", she said. " You need to see this", she said, holding my hand as we walked along the hallway. I noticed groups of students whispering to each other I moved closer. It was Adrian. he was in the middle of the hallway, beating up another student. "Why can't anyone stop him?" I hate to see people being bullied. "Because he is Adrian Cole" "So?" "Nobody crosses his path", she said. "Even the teachers can't stop him." "And his father owns half of the city" "Like seriously", I said, raising an eyebrow. "Nobody wants to get on his bad side", she said. "That guy probably crossed the line", she added. "That doesn't give him the right to beat up another student. Another student said something I couldn't hear. " What did you say?" Adrian said, moving closer to him. He grabbed the collar of his shirt and was about to hit him. " Adrian stop", I yelled. I couldn't stand the sight of him hitting another student, even after Sophie tried to stop me. I pushed through the student and walked towards him. "Let him go", I said. "Mind your business", he said and walked away. I could hear whispers from the students She actually stood up to him She crossed the line already Sophie walked towards me, dragging me to a corner "What the hell did you just do there?" she said. "You are new here" "But..." "Can you just stay out of anything related to Adrian? We can't afford to offend him. " "I didn't do anything wrong. Since nobody was going to stand up against him, I can't just stand by and watch him do that" "You should have just done that", she said. "I'm off to class", she said, walking forward. I noticed students' eyes on me as they walked past me. Vennessa and Audrey approached me and stopped. "Be ready for the worst that could come your way", Vennessa said and laughed. I walked away, and different thoughts ran through my mind. I hope history doesn't repeat itself.
