THE RIVER THAT HEALED US
EXT. KAMPALA CAFÉ - NIGHT - RAIN
Rain hits the glass. Half-empty café.
BENJAMIN (20s, quiet, tired eyes) sits across from CAROL (20s). Two cold coffees between them.
CAROL
I should have said this sooner. I
was scared, Benjamin. Scared that
if I let myself trust you completely,
and you walked away like everyone
else in my life has, I’d break into
pieces I couldn’t put back. So I
hurt you first. To feel like I had
control. Like I was the one leaving,
not the one being left.
BENJAMIN doesn’t interrupt. His thumb traces the rim of his cup.
BENJAMIN
I hear you. I really do. I’ve sat
with that for weeks. But Carol, you
don’t get to make choices for my
life to protect yourself. That’s not
fair to me. I deserved honesty, not
games. I deserved to know what I was
standing in. I can’t build something
with someone who starts from fear
and calls it love.
CAROL
So that’s it? After everything?
You’re just leaving?
BENJAMIN
I’m choosing peace. I’m choosing
to stop fighting for someone who
won’t meet me halfway. I’m choosing
not to disappear for you anymore.
Take care of yourself, Carol.
Really.
He stands. Leaves cash on the table. Walks out into the rain. No look back.
EXT. KAMPALA STREETS - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
BENJAMIN runs. Rain soaks his shirt. Water fills his shoes. He passes boda stages, closed shops, neon on wet tarmac. His pace is steady.
BENJAMIN (V.O.)
I’m not running away from Kampala.
I’m running toward the people who
never asked me to be louder, richer,
or fixed. I’m running toward quiet.
. EXT. RIVERSTONE HIGH - SCHOOL FIELD
First light. Old mango tree. Bark: B. A. A. W. J. S.
ALVIN sees him first. Drops his bag. Sprints.
ALVIN
Benjamin! You came back!
ALVIN hugs him hard. ALAN, WILSON, JONATHAN, SIMON circle in.
SIMON
We thought you were gone for good,
man. We checked your old room.
Nothing. Just dust.
BENJAMIN
I had nowhere else to go. Kampala
got loud. Everyone wanted a version
of me I didn’t have anymore. I
needed quiet. I needed you.
WILSON
Then stay. No questions. No
explanations tonight. Just stay.
We’ll figure out the rest tomorrow.
ALAN
Mango tree’s still here. So are we.
That hasn’t changed.
BENJAMIN looks at all five. Nods once.
*SCENE 4. INT. RIVERSTONE HIGH - ART ROOM - DAY*
Sunlight. Dust in the air. NIA (17) at an easel, painting.
BENJAMIN in the doorway.
BENJAMIN
You’re late to assembly. They’re
calling names. They’ll mark you
absent.
NIA doesn’t turn.
NIA
You’re standing in my light. If
you’re going to stay, move two
steps left. That’s all I’m asking.
He moves.
BENJAMIN
Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.
You look... focused. Like you don’t
have time for people. Like you’ve
already decided.
NIA pauses. Turns halfway.
NIA
Good. Means you’re paying attention.
Most people walk in and talk over
the silence. You watched first. I’m
Nia.
BENJAMIN
Benjamin. I used to study here.
Years ago.
NIA
Used to?
BENJAMIN
I’m back to figure out what’s next.
Because I don’t know yet.
NIA studies him. Nods at the empty easel.
NIA
Then don’t waste time talking about
it. Pick up a brush. Or leave.
Watching is also a choice, but make
it.
BENJAMIN
Can I just watch today? Without
pressure?
NIA
You can. But don’t pretend you’re
not here.
