Sarah's POV
“Wait!” Henry's voice reverberated on the walls, but it didn't stop me from trying my best to get away.
It wasn't the voice, I had expected.
My legs were weak. Pain shot through my body, it was only a matter of time before someone came to persuade me to stay.
I heard footsteps running up the stairs, I had a guess it wasn't our royal highness.
“Look at me” Henry said, his hand wrapping on my wrist.
“Go away, Henry.”
“I can't”
“You found it easy yesterday.” my voice came out icier than intended. Still, I didn't care.
“I knew he wouldn't hurt you, Blondie”
“Well, I didn't, Henry! And you were wrong, he just did.”
He opened his mouth, probably to make another excuse for his precious Alpha, but I didn’t wait.
I yanked my hand out of his grip and stormed off, my legs wobbling beneath me but my anger carrying me further than I thought possible.
And they say anger's bad.
Utilize me.
Like I was nothing more than a tool.
I stumbled past the training grounds, the smell of smoke and sweat mixing in my nose. People glanced up, eyes following me, whispers starting. I hated it, all of it.
By the time I got to the gates, Henry was already there.
“Where?” he questioned.
“I don't know.” I let out an exasperated sigh.
He looked me over and I could tell what he was thinking. I was in no shape to head out, he knew, I did and the watching eyes seemed to know it too.
“Be safe.”
---
The world outside the manor walls were noisy. Like life was happening again. I had forgotten how busy New York Pack could be,
I stopped near the cliffs where the reception tower was, pulled out the little device I’d hidden in my pocket, and called the only person who still picked up when I reached out.
“Sarah?” Dimitri’s grandmother’s voice croaked through the line, soft and full of a concern.
“Hi, Madam Rosa,” I whispered, swallowing the knot in my throat.
“Madam? We'll get back to that, you sound sick. What’s wrong?”
I laughed, a hollow, cracked thing. “Nothing new. Just… life being life.”
“Did Dimitri hurt you again?”
The silence stretched. I didn’t answer. She sighed like she already knew.
“Whee are you? I can hear people chattering in the background. Go home. I'll be there in a bit” I had missed listening to her sweet voice.
“I don’t have one,” I said quietly.
Before she could argue, I ended the call. I couldn’t bear comfort right now. Especially when all I wanted to do was listen to her.
I walked aimlessly after that, down the winding path that led into the small community nearby.
The market was busy, the kind of busy that used to comfort me, laughter, bartering, the smell of bread. It should have made me feel normal. Instead, it just reminded me of everything I’d lost.
And that’s when I saw her.
Beatrice.
Standing there in a lilac dress, gold around her neck, her laughter cutting through the air like a blade. The same woman my husband had left me for.
Our eyes met. Hers widened first, then she smiled that same infuriating smug smile she gave me the first time we met.
“Well, well,” she said, voice dripping with sickening sweetness. “If it isn’t Mrs. Used-to-be.”
I didn’t move. I just stared at her. “Beatrice.”
“You look… different,” she said, scanning me from head to toe. “Tired. Rough around the edges.”
I tilted my head. “I'm not the kind of woman who gets into a fight with other women because her husband cheated with them.”
“But,” I continued, “I am very much the sort of woman who would defend herself if she's being spoken to wrongly and trust me Beetroot, you wouldn't want to try me with all the wolf power in the world.”
Her face turned the exact shade of a hand stained beetroot, her smile also faltered. Just a flicker, but I caught it.
“I’m surprised you came back here,” she said after a pause. “After what happened with—”
“Don’t,” I warned. My voice came out low. Dangerous.
She smirked again. “I see why he got bored, it's always the same with you. By the way, how's the ’mate bond’ seperation going?”
For a moment, everything inside me went white-hot. I knew it, not reaching out to me was deliberate.
My palm tingled with the urge to slap her, to wipe that self-satisfied expression off her face, but I didn’t.
She knew we weren't mated, knew we had crafted ours, in other to have some semblance to a real mate bond.
We needed one to rule as royals.
I was too blinded by love to pay attention to the warnings of the woman who put it in place.
The seizures were like the one I had during the ritual and it'd only worsen. I had been ready to bear the hurt during the night of the ritual.
As long as it meant having Dimitri.
I just smiled. A slow, deliberate curve of my lips that made her step back ever so slightly.
“Tell him I said thank you,” I murmured.
“If he hadn’t showed me how low he could stoop. Infidelity is disgusting and not only that, by clinging to a hopping w***e. That makes you a whoring frog by the way. I wouldn't have found my true mate. The Beta of the Bloodhound pack.”
I watched her face shift from curiosity to anger, to annoyance and then disbelief. She burst into a bout of laughter.
Even I wanted to laugh at myself, everyome knew how powerful and deadly the people of Bloodhound were. No one could match up to them.
Dimitri would probably be a secondary wolf, in the upper primary. Having the Beta would be a fatal blow to him.
When she saw how serious I was, she paused and looked at me. Shocked.
“Bye, Beetroot” she huffed and scurried off. Not much of a bully now are ya?
I turned and walked away, letting her perfume fade behind me like her hairline. I learnt everything modelling, it came with knowing the smell of Ferdin for frontal hair growth.
