Chapter 14

Aaron's POV I hadn't come in last night, managing an interaction with Sarah, didn't mean I wanted it to persist. If it weren't for Henry, I'd have dragged her before the people. He had used our mind link to communicate, “Don't do it, Aaron, let it go” he had advised. “She's been through a lot, it's only normal she'd be this way,” He continued. It didn't mean, I'd let it slide. “Try talking to her instead, I...” he was cut short by her remark. “Get a room while you're at it” my head angled sharply in her direction. I headed for her, while Henry yelled some things to me through the mind link. Things, I didn't care to listen to. As I got closer to her, I could feel her regret her comment. Good. She closed her eyes, did she think I'd strike her? I don't hit women. I placed her on my shoulder. Her smell filled my nostrils. I pushed yesterday out of my head. It was a brand new day, My hand closed on the door to my manor, whilst I searched for my card in my breast pocket. Two of my fingers formed a scissor holding on to it, as I slipped it out and swiped it on the door plate. I wondered what she was doing, nothing that's for sure. A spoiled housewife, who was thrown out her home for being insubordinate no less. The door beeped and I pushed it open, she wasn't in the living room, her scent hung faintly in the air. I made my way to the rooms down the hallway. I didn't find her in any. 1st floor maybe, nope. Kitchen, nope. But it smelled like her so she must have been there, I decided to sniff her out and my best bet landed in the last room I expected her to be in. One would think she'd fancy the floral rooms and bright colours. I cleared my throat, just so she would hear me and get herself together, when she didn't answer, I let myself in. Her back was to the wall, hair disheveled and head laid back, she hadn't bothered to take off the clothes she wore last night. Perhaps, she couldn't. She looked pitiful and vulnerable, nothing like the big-mouthed lady who got on my nerves constantly. My eyes caught sight of sparkles from a bowl, confirming my suspicions. She had been crying, weeping by the looks of it. That bowl was filled, and some littered the floor, yet it was nowhere near enough. She had clearly done this for me and my people. Tired herself out that she couldn't even hear me come in. The position she was in looked uncomfortable, assessing the situation like I'd do for one wounded in combat, I decided to pick her up and place her in bed. Maybe have Avery send people to tend to her. It'd probably send my sister into a shock since no one except Henry has been here in years. Not that family couldn't. They just never asked, even if they wanted to. For that, I'm glad. She'll have to do it for herself when she gets up. “Aaron?” I heard her mutter my name, I spun to find her sleeping still. Must have been in my head. With one more look at her, I shut the door. “What's the statistics on our survivors?” I asked from the stairs, sensing Henry's presence. “We've lost 21 more today” Henry said pain laced in his voice. The breakfast he got from the fridge untouched. “How is she?” he queried. I knew him well enough, to understand he didn't want to speak about it anymore. Honestly? Neither did I. “I wouldn't know.” “C'mon, Aaron. She's not bad when you get to know her.” Was he being serious right now? “You should have checked on her at least. If not for anything, for your safety.” Believe me. I know. "She cried all through” I announced. “Nah, she's too tough” he chuckled. “Not when it comes to an Aaron's speech apparently” I chipped, taking a bite out of his cake. “What did you do?” he demanded. Henry must have taken a liking to her. “She's not our type remember?” I licked the spoon and it did nothing to curb Henry's growing irritation. “She's not, but she is a person Aaron and most times I think you forget that” “You're right. Only, I don't forget. I believe she's nothing to be concerned about and should be utilized by us as much as we can to produce the diamonds we need to protect ourselves” Koi!! Metal clattered and stones bounced around, clattering as they went. My head followed the sound and I found an exhausted Sarah, looking at me with disbelief and something stronger. Hate. “Wait!”
