Chris Pov
I wasn't shocked to see Serenity have powers. She was already miraculous in my eyes. And since I already knew about her not being from this planet I was expecting her to be even more incredible than I already knew she was. I got upset when she started talking about going home. I wanted to figure out a way to keep her here. Even if I knew that was an impossible task.
"Chris," I heard my mom calling me from the kitchen.
"Yeah,"
"Can we talk some more, now that we are alone," she said. I nodded and followed her to the kitchen table.
"If this is about the fight today and you being worried about me and-,"
"No, no, it's not," she said. "We are going to have to move again."
"What? Why?" I shouted.
"The bank is taking away our loan. I have been late on a few payments," she explained.
"A few?"
"Three," she said shamefully.
"Mom, why didn't you tell me before," I complained. "I know things are tough and money is always tight but bills come first and I would have found a way to help you."
"Honey, that is my job," she said. "I'll get some more overtime and we will be back on track in no time."
"You can't do it all alone," I told her. "Derek and I will get jobs so we can help you out."
"No, I want you two to focus on school. And what about college next year."
"Mom, the cards we have been dealt in life don't include things like college. Derek and I should have been helping you for a while now," I told her.
"Chris, I just need you to take care of yourself," she pleaded.
"I know, I know," I huffed. I walked outside needing some time alone. I didn't realize that I had started to walk but when I stopped to look around I didn't know where I was. I looked at my phone and saw I had been walking for an entire hour. I sighed in frustration and anger. My whole life I have been plagued with troubles and worries. I wonder if I will ever know anything but pain and suffering. Was my life really meant to be this tragic? I began to think about those gorgeous red eyes, then that amazing smile and wavy brown hair. Serenity made everything better. She took my anger away. She gave me hope and happiness. I was brought out of my thoughts by that sweet voice of hers.
"BOO!" her beautiful voice said suddenly. I looked up and noticed her standing in front of me.
"Hey, Where did you come from and how did you find me?" I asked her.
"I came looking for you," she said nervously. "I just um knew where you were, somehow."
"Oh, did you now," I teased.
"Chris," Serenity tried to slap me on my chest but I grabbed her hand and held it in mine. She didn't try to pull it away. She just stood there and looked into my eyes.
"I'm glad your here," I told her.
"Are you okay?" she asked with so much concern in her eyes.
"Yeah, I'm good," I tried to sound convincing.
"You seemed to be dealing with a lot," she said.
"Yeah, well it's nothing you should worry about,"
"Tell me, what's wrong,"
"My mother wasn't born a KING," I didn't mean to say it so harshly but it still came out wrong. Serenity bowed her head and I knew I had offended her. "I'm sorry."
"Your family seems to have issues but from what I see it looks-,"
"Looks can be deceiving. We seem normal and happy but we are broke. No money, more problems. We move a lot and barely have enough food to eat." She gave me this look. Ugh, I hate that look.
"Don't look at me like that,"
"I'm sorry," I pulled her closer to me. "No, don't be but I don't need you to feel sorry for me or my mom."
"Okay,"
I sighed, " So tell me, why did your eyes turn black when you used your powers on Trey." She hesitated but then finally answered me.
"Well, anyone who has a spirit is known as a spirit holder. The spirits are like beings or gods who grant us these gifts. We try to use them fairly and even if we have to defend ourselves it is just. But sometimes spirit holder misuses their powers and use them only to hurt others. They are known as dark spirit holders.
Their eyes are pitch black due to their spirits growing darker day by day. They lose all connections to the spirits. They grow numb and evil."
"So, when your eyes were black, you-,"
"I wanted to hurt Trey for hurting you but I shouldn't have used my powers. He can't defend himself against me."
"Oh."
"I didn't mean to, I just wanted him to stop hurting you," I closed the small space between us and held her tighter in my arms.
"Serenity, you are not evil or dark. I appreciate what you did," I tried to convince her.
"No, I shouldn't have interfered," she complained. I kissed her so I could stop her from blaming herself. I felt her arm trying to break out of my grip but that just made me want to kiss her longer and deeper.
"Your right, you shouldn't have interfered. I can protect myself. I will protect myself but I am glad you wanted to keep me safe and I am glad to know you care." Serenity began to blush and I thought about how cute she looked when she let herself be vulnerable. I loved how strong she was and how independent she needed to be but this soft and open side of her made me want to be strong for her. I wanted to let her known I could be by her side and protect her if needed. Power or no power I would be a match to her. I would keep her safe. It all came down to how long I would have to be able to do so.
