( Issac POV )
I stopped in my tracks and noticed that Amelia had stopped as I can't heard the crunch of light footsteps, they were barely audible. A snout flicked over my shoulder to make sure I wasn't mistaken. So she was looking somewhere in the distance, towards the place we had just left.
"What happened?" A low voice came from my chest.
"What is it?" Amelia's surprised voice echoed through the silent forest.
My gaze drifted to a small blue ball somewhere far at the edge of the clearing. A strange warmth rose in my chest as I looked in that direction. Without a word, we decided to see what it was, travelling quickly towards the goal ahead. As we approached the blue ball it grew bigger and bigger, but it didn't look like a dangerous. A few metres away, we stopped and looked directly at the blue light which all of sudden felt very familiar.
"It seems like an eternity." Gabriel's voice came from above.
I looked up and then saw two Archangels with white wings above my head. It was so strange to see them here. By our mutual agreement, they left for good. I didn't want them to flap their white wings within the college boundaries and arise the curiosity of the students. It's the only way to keep them under the radar. However, I cannot answer the question of where they have been all this time and the reason why they decided to appear so suddenly.
"Gabriel, Shamuel. What are you doing here? "There was surprise and joy in Amelia's voice.
A few minutes later, Gabriel and Shamuel placed their feet on the cool ground, eye level to us now. They hadn't changed one bit. Perhaps Archangels don't age similarly like vampires? I have a feeling they've been working on something special all this time but unfortunately, I’m unable to ask due to being in four legged form. Only Amelia can talk to me. So I'm going to have to sit tight and listen to this whole conversation.
"The tournament is in a few days and so the rumors reached us. We have come to express our sincere gratitude that you and Issac are working together for peace between the supernatural beings." Gabriel smiled broadly as he sat down in the lotus pose on the grass.
"I hope you have the patience to put up with this many students." Shamuel dipped his gaze in my direction.
I rolled my eyes with a silent growl. This is not my first year as principal of the college. I've managed to deal with four races of supernatural beings at one time. I'm sure it won't be too difficult to take it all on one more time. This time it should be even easier with only fifteen young people and four adults who are my eternal friends.
"It is very sweet, but I am confident that we will survive this tournament. Issac has me to keep things entertaining and fun. Thank you for caring." Amelia looked at the two Archangels in front of her.
"We'll be watching everything you do, just from a little further away. We'll be there supporting, but no one will notice us." The corner of Gabriel's lips turned up.
"I tried to convince Gabriel that we shouldn't show up there, but even he made me bet on which kind of supernatural being would win." Shamuel rolled his eyes and sighed.
"Which one?" Amelia's curious, different eyes shifted to Gabriel.
"I don't mean to sound intolerant, but of course werewolves. Although I am the guardian of dragons, I am well aware of the capabilities and powers of all supernatural beings. Though of course much depends on the task, my opinion remains the same." Gabriel dipped his gaze to Amelia.
"It was good to chat and see you after all this time. However it's time for me to run, I have a duel to face." The corner of Amelia's mouth lifted to reveal white pointed teeth.
"We'll be watching you." Shamuel put his hand on Amelia's light fur, rubbing his fingers over her a few times.
Amelia turned to signal and then wagging her tail like a puppy, took off running across the meadow without looking back. I followed her example, and my heart thumped with joy. It's good to know that we have secret guardians who are always watching Amelia from the outside. Well, maybe not twenty-four hours a day, but they will take care of her.
With every step, our pace quickened and the cool evening wind whistled through our ears. The forest floor crunched underfoot, gradually a white mist enveloped the tree trunks, the whole scene before my eyes. After a few more minutes of silence, we came to a halt by our. I settled down in the nearest bushes and after a few waves of pain, I returned to my true form. My fingers soon unzipped the sports bag from which I pulled out my tracksuit, thankful to hide my naked body. I then threw the sports bag over my shoulder and walked towards the bushes next to the car.
Amelia was already leaning against the vehicle, looking in my direction. I can't help it, but the sight of her immediately brought a cheeky grin to my face. My heart seemed to skip a beat. It is hard to believe, it seems like a dream, that this wonderful woman will be my wife in a few months time. The keys jingled in my hands and the car lights flashed. I shortened the distance by a few steps and with my left hand, I opened the door for my fiancée.
Amelia climbed in gracefully. I hurried to the driver's side of the car slamming the door. I'm not sure what time it is, but we're probably going to be late to the duel. It doesn't matter though, Ava will wait as long as it takes. Looking earlier at Sawyer’s girls' dark determined eyes, I could see the fire burning like a hot temper. For what I saw tonight that I'm pretty sure they're the perfectly suited for each other.
I pressed the accelerator to get the car moving in the right direction. Amelia laid her head on my shoulder and her sweet scent touched my nose. The corner of my lips turned up in the position we were in. Thoughts kept going round and round in my head about the upcoming tournament, even though it’s not important right now. I am trying to stay present, enjoy this moment with my girlfriend. So many responsibilities are still weighing on my shoulders. The director's chair has its pluses and minuses. I can't force myself to always worry about things, life is too short to be an uptight bastard.
Quiet background music flowed from the radio, Amelia didn't say a word. The town signs flew past my eyes and the streetlights welcoming us back. The wolf inside me lay quietly curled up in a ball very content right now. I turned the steering wheel to the left, moving ever closer to the college to which I had dedicated my life.
"Are you all right?" I pressed my lips to Amelia's head for a moment.
"Yes, thank you, Issac. I needed that." Amelia's soft voice echoed through the interior of the car.
Before my eyes was a white college beautifully lit up in the night. I parked the car in the parking lot and then turned off the engine. Amelia kept her head on my shoulder for a few more moments, then with ease, I followed her example by opening the door and getting out of the car. The moon shone high in the sky. We held hands as we walked down the narrow path towards the college, turning towards the former witch territory.
"Are you afraid?" My inquisitive gaze drifted towards Amelia.
"Afraid? I have nothing to be afraid. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to move through the woods." The corner of Amelia's lips lifted and her gaze turned towards the moon shining down from the sky.
"Don't hurt her too much, okay?" My eyebrow rose and my gaze went to the treetops.
" I don't think Ava is someone who gives up easily. I think I will have to do my best to defeat her. We are really lucky to have such a candidate." Amelia's clear voice spread around.
"Well, we can bet you're the stronger one." I smiled broadly as I winked at my fiancée.
"Yes, but will she fight me when she sees my different eyes? This question is not giving me peace of mind." A few small lines etched themselves into Amelia's forehead.
"I think that after the fight she will attack you with questions, but she won't give up." My gaze drifted to a red oak leaf in the meadow.
In the distance stood the same red oak, reminding me of one of the most amazing witches I have ever known - Hellen. A strange pain, or perhaps excitement, shot through my chest. She was so proud of all the deeds and events that had happened over the years. All I hope deep in my heart is that she is now happy and in a better place. Watching us from above with a big smile and bright thoughts. Amelia's gaze lingered on an opening, silhouettes of figures were coming towards us gradually. Of course, Sawyer has joined the fray and will support his heartfellow in this fight. Then my gaze shifted to Quin, who stood leaning against an oak tree trunk, her piercing eyes staring right at me. It was only when I got closer that I realised that Ava, in her true form, was eagerly awaiting her fight. I must admit her wolf does look impressive. The colour is strikingly different from any I have seen in my lifetime.
Each werewolf from a different pack has its own dominant colours. In my Moon Pack, dark colours such as dark brown, black and grey are most common . One thing is clear that Ava's pack has lighter colours. Her werewolf's fur is thick, beige blowing in a light breeze. Her golden eyes looked straight at Amelia, and her chest heaved slightly. She was about the same size as Sawyer in form, but I'm guessing she'll be a few tenths of an inch shorter than Amelia.
"Bro." Sawyer's brown eyes locked on mine.
"Well I'll take care of my real form before before we start." Amelia turned sideways heading for the nearest bush.
"You're late." Quin's serious look stared at me.
"Don't be such a frown. The wrinkles on your face will appear sooner than they should." I winked at Quin.
"Issac." Quin smiled broadly, stopping her angry frown.
"How's Ava feeling?" My gaze shifted to the beige werewolf sitting nearby.
"Like a fish in water." Sawyer smiled widely, I noticed a strange sparkle in his eyes.
I think it's anxiety. Neither of us knows how Ava will react to Amelia's coat color or her distinctive eyes. But we are all very aware of this risk. Sawyer is probably afraid that Ava will freak out or stay silent for a few days, angry that we didn't tell her the truth sooner. Although we can only speculate, we will soon see everything with our own eyes.
Footsteps sounded behind me and my gaze went to Amelia, whose white and blue coat glowed in the dark. Amelia's golden and white eyes looked straight into Ava's, her slow steps shortened the distance little by little. Ava's eyes twitched as she looked at Amelia and then like two question marks, looked at me. Amelia sat down across from Ava, and Ava strangely turned her muzzle to one side. Then I realised that Amelia was using her opportunity to communicate and explain everything to Ava. Although I have no idea what words were going on between them, I hoped for the best.
"What do you think they're saying?" Sawyer's gaze drifted towards me.
"I think Amelia is trying to explain the whole truth." Quin crossed his arms over his chest.
"Do you think Ava will believe the whole story?" I leaned against a tree trunk near Quin.
"Amelia's standing proof against her." The corner of Sawyer's lips turned up.
Amelia stood back a few steps and then turned her shining eyes in my direction. As if to let me know that everything was fine and they were ready for a fight. With a few big steps, Ava and Amelia stepped back, giving themselves more space protecting us all from unexpected tackles and actions. My gaze never left Amelia and Ava, who stood just a few metres apart, looking straight at each other.
"Come on, let's start with this exercise." Quin's loud voice filled the air.
In the blink of an eye, Ava launched herself straight at Amelia at high speed. The white and blue wolf dodged the beige wolf in an instant, but the next strike traveled straight for Amelia's snout. She took several large steps backwards as if dazed, gathering herself she took an opportunity, slamming right into Ava's side. Recovering easily, Ava slid a few metres to the side and took a firm position on all fours as if nothing had happened. Amelia took her time to run straight towards Ava and next thing, they were both on the ground. The position changed right in front of my eyes, one moment Ava was on top and then Amelia. Neither was going to give up or let the other win. Each of these girls wanted to win and hated to lose. With one swift kick, Ava threw Amelia off her feet. Amelia fell to the ground with a thud, but in the next moment she was standing with her four feet planted firmly on the ground. With one strong swipe of her paw, Amelia threw Ava, who’d already taken an attacking position, away from her, then took the opportunity to pin her to the ground. Anelia pointed white teeth flashed against Ava's neck, signaling win.
There was a loud applause, and then I joined them.It was a truly amazing and breathtaking fight. At one point I even thought that Amelia was going to have a really big problem beating Ava. As time went on it became more and more obvious that Ava was running out of energy and strength. The two girls headed towards the nearest bush and after a few minutes they came out hugging each other's shoulders and smiling widely.
"I almost kicked the hybrid's ass." Ava smiled broadly as she looked at Amelia.
"Almost doesn't count, but you were great. I haven't had such a serious fight in a long time." Amelia smiled broadly.
"You girls did great." I smiled broadly as I stretched my arms towards Amelia.
Amelia didn't wait long to run into my embrace and Ava melted between Sawyer's wide arms. My lips touched Amelia's forehead, rewarding her with a kiss of victory. In one easy movement, she wriggled out of my embrace.
"This is all true? Legend?" Ava's brown eyes stared into mine.
"I don't know how much Amelia told you but I guarantee she has told you not one word of a lie." My gaze drifted to Ava who stood hugging Sawyer.
"It's hard to believe, but looking into her eyes I thought something was peculiar. Now I understand why her eyes are different." Ava turned her head toward Sawyer, kissing his cheek.
"It's been nice watching you fight, but it’s time to get some rest, it's getting late." I looked at my friends standing nearby.
"Thank you for the opportunity to be among the strongest." Ava smiled broadly as she looked into Amelia's eyes.
"Goodnight." Quin raised her hand in farewell.
We didn't wait for anything and we turned and headed across the meadow to the path leading towards the college building. My attention was caught by Amelia's footsteps, which were oddly uneven. I furrowed my brow and then glanced towards her feet to make sure my hunch wasn't wrong. I could feel every step she took while my hand rested on her waist and she crouched beside me. Yes, I was right, one of her legs was limping strangely.
In one easy movement, I took her in my arms, and Amelia's face broke into a wide smile. I know how much she dislikes it when I carry her, but at least I know that her heart is happy. All this nonsense about her being too heavy is just an attempt to persuade me to put her down.
"What happened to your leg?" My eyebrow rose as I looked into her dark brown eyes that shone in the moonlight.
"Perhaps Ava did more damage than I expected, or my powers aren't as strong as I thought." Amelia's gaze shifted to my face.
"You're strong, you've just forgotten what it's like to fight. Winning proves that you're still the strongest." I winked, then rewarded her forehead with a kiss.
We walked through the forest in silence, the warm air Amelia exhaled bouncing off my chest. She snuggled closer, and I pulled her closer to my chest. Thirty paces later, the white walls of the college loomed ahead and soon we were striding along the path towards the car park. I carefully lowered Amelia to the car on the ground, and then opened the door for her. By the time we heading out of the college grounds, the car was filled with the sound of her snoring and the purring of the car engine. Amelia leaned her head against the glass and looked out of the window at the night city. The streets flew past the car's windscreen, and my foot was on the accelerator. A smile shone on my face, my Little Wolf had won. Every day I am more and more proud of her. Although there seems to be nowhere or nothing where she surprises me. Every new challenge we face, I make the mistake of thinking so. As the city sign flew past my eyes, my muscles relaxed as if demanding sleep. My gaze drifted to the rear-view mirror before turning onto the woodland path leading to the house. There was a dark black jeep that didn't miss my eyes - it was following us. It is within a few metres of the main road, so nothing out of the ordinary yet. I do not want to put it into words, because Amelia will start to worry. No matter who is there or what they want, I will protect her.
I slowed the car down specifically in the hope that the car behind would overtake us, but to my disappointment it did exactly the same as me. I was distracted from the car by the ringing and vibrating phone in my pocket. My gaze drifted for a moment to Amelia, who was still asleep with her head against the car window. Probably being out of shape and fighting had exhausted her. I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and then pressed the green button, putting it to my ear.
"Hello?" My quiet voice rang through the air.
My gaze drifted back to the narrow path that led ever closer to my house. Then I glanced in the mirror, and the suspicious vehicle was still following me. What should I do? Should I stop or go straight home? A million questions in my head, I know that nothing can beat a werewolf. My hunch is that there are more than just people out there. Could it be Lorenzo? No, he wouldn't act so stupidly. Come on, Issac, think about what could be coming at you at this time of day. I don't seem to have any enemies or other obscure creatures wanting to take my head off my shoulders.
" Can you press the accelerator? You're dragging like a turtle." A familiar voice came on the other end of the phone.
