Chapter 1
Evelyn’s POV Growls as loud as thunder ignites in the blanket of the night. What was once a silent night has turned into destruction and chaos. “Run! Evie, run!!!” Growled Kaden behind me as I pushed at the balls of my feet faster than I ever thought possible. Why us? I asked myself as I ran faster than I ever thought I could. “Evie!! They’re getting close!!” Kaden’s voice rasped through heavy breaths. Kaden is right behind me, making sure I’m safe, but I know this isn’t where he wants to be. He’d want nothing more than to rip these rogues apart. “I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up,” I shout to him. “YOU CAN DO THIS! Evie, please keep going,” he yells, but it’s too late; my legs can’t hold up. I fall with a loud thud on the damp dirt of the forest. “I can’t, I can’t do this,” I yell, frustrated with my human body. “Stop talking nonsense; we have to keep moving. I’m going to shift, and you’ll climb on top of me, understood!” His voice is stern. His eyes flash with those of his wolf, and fur erupts from his skin. When a loud growl thundered through the pack territory. I fall back to my knees. “Dad,” I breathe, clutching my chest tightly as pain ripples through me. Agonizing howls break out from our pack members, and I see Kaden clutching his chest in pain as he lets out his own ear-aching howl towards the full moon above us. He locks eyes with mine with an unfamiliar cold and distant look I don’t recognize. I know he feels it too, the constricting feeling in our hearts of losing our father. “Father,” Kaden growls loudly. “Daddy,” I breathe meekly. “Dad, I’m so sorry,” I howled with tears flowing down my cheeks. Our father, Alpha Daniel of Stone Brook, has officially died at the hands of the rogues. “ He’s dead, Evie. I have to go man the front lines. Mira is coming; she’ll take you to safety,” he said with his voice emotionless and his eyes locked on the moon. “There’s nothing to fight for anymore, Kaden! They killed him! They killed him, Kaden!” I cried with my hands balled into fists. “There’s plenty to fight for! Now get the f**k up!” He growled, his eyes flashing with those of his wolf. Another howl emerges from the woods, one that we both recognize. He grabs my shoulders, making me squeak, and tosses me on Mira’s back as she breaks through the forest bushes. “Take her to safety, QUICKLY!” He commands, not leaving any room for argument. Her brown wolf eyes meet mine, and I can see the sadness in her eyes. Kaden is her mate, and he is now going back to the frontlines, the same frontlines that took our father. Kaden shifts into his black wolf, looking back at Mira, making it obvious they are mind-linking each other. They give each other one last look, and Kaden takes off his wolf on full rampage. We head north to the safe house our father had organized for us if we were ever invaded. We make it half a mile up the forest when —Her wolf ears perk up suddenly, and a howl erupts behind us. “s**t, they found us!” I cursed. “Hold on tight, Evie. I’m going to try to shake them off,” Mira links. She runs faster, branches whipping against me, ripping my skin left and right as she maneuvers herself through the forest. The rogues howl once more, their red eyes shining like possessed demons. Mira makes a sharp turn left. “No, Mira, this is a dead end!” I link, but it’s too late . She stops rapidly, making me fall on impact. “Ahh,” I grunted as I land on a hard rock. The hunt is over; the rogues caught up to us. A victory howl erupts from the foaming mouths of the rogues . “I’m sorry, Evie. I’m so sorry. Kaden would be so disappointed in me,” she whimpers inside my mind. “No, no, please, Mira, it’s going to be okay. We can fight them off,” they stalk closer. Mira bares her teeth in warning. “We’re surrounded, Kaden. We’re on the north side by the mountain,” I yell in the link. “f**k!! I’m sending warriors. Hang in there,” he links back. But there are too many of them for her to fight alone. They stalk closer, snapping their jaws at her, hungry for blood. She blocks the attack and goes in to strike herself, and goes straight for the neck, ripping it off with ease. The rogues growl angrily at the loss of one of their mates. Two of them lunge forward, grabbing Mira by each side and puncturing the sides. She whimpers loudly, but shifts her weight so far to the left that they bounce off of her. “Mira is hurt, Kaden! Where are you!” “Evie, shift now!!” Kaden shouts in the link. My body trembles. I haven’t been allowed to shift since I was 10. ”I —I” “I’m telling you to shift. There’s no other way!!” He roars. I feel his alpha command rush through me, and a loud growl rips through the air. My dormant wolf is free, and she’s going ramped inside me. She has been alpha-commanded to stay dormant, and there’s a reason Dad didn’t want me to shift. It’s not because he wanted to be cruel. It was because my wolf is unsteady and vicious. We never merged into one. She’s an angry mess, and with one bad look, she’d be ready to tear this world to shreds. “Let me shift!!” She growls at me. I let her take control, my eyes flashing in warning. I don’t argue with her. She lets another monstrous growl rip out of me before she breaks my entire body, shifting at a rapid pace with no hesitation. My wolf, confident, lean, and vicious, lands on her four paws with a loud thud, and if that isn’t intimidating enough, her size is twice the size of a normal wolf. The rogues’ eyes all fall on her, and Mira’s wolf face is left in shock. She’s never seen my wolf. She shakes her striking white fur and barres her teeth in one final warning. The rogues shake off the disbelief and take a fighting stance. “Move out of the way, Mira. I can’t control her,” I link. Before she can move, she grabs Mira by the scruff and thrusts her backwards, sending her flying into the mountain wall behind us. It’s only us surrounded by the rogues, and she barres her teeth at the three rogues remaining. I feel the familiar veil start to form. I’m losing control. I can feel it. “Whatever you do, stay out of her way, Mira, please,” I beg in the link before the world goes black..
