Chapter 3 The Twins

594 Words
Mariana was somewhat dazed as she looked down at her two children, who were standing next to her. It felt like she was in a dream. Five years ago, when she discovered that she was pregnant, she was determined to have an abortion. However, she was told that her blood type was scarce, and if she had the abortion, it would be difficult for her to have babies again. That was why she finally decided to give birth to her children, a pair of boy-girl twins. "Mommy, our luggage is here!" The two adorable kids, only four years old, were still in their most innocent years, excited and curious about everything. A large suitcase and two small ones were delivered to them. Mariana took down the bags, and each baby carried one. "Come on. Let's go to visit your great aunt!" Mariana came back this time because of work opportunities. A famous design company at home reached out to her and was very interested in her fashion design concept. They promised her a high salary and made an official invitation. Mariana had already spent all her savings and the money she had borrowed from her father while studying abroad. With two children to raise, she had no choice but to give up her studies and return home to work. Coincidentally, her aunt's children had all left to study and work elsewhere, leaving her aunt alone. When she heard that Mariana was returning back, she offered to help her take care of the twins. Everything seemed perfectly arranged. Mariana was tired of being abroad and eager to reconnect with her family. Furthermore, her two babies had become more sensible, so she finally decided it was time to return home. As they walked through the airport, the two exceptionally beautiful babies immediately caught the attention of the passengers beside them. "What a pair of beautiful twins! Perfect genes!" "So cute. I really want to hug them." "Are the kids of some celebrity? Why do they look so beautiful? They are just like dolls." Mariana overheard the comments from the people around them and couldn't help but glance at her two babies. Indeed, their genes were remarkable. Born under the same conditions, they were of different genders but equally stunning. Her son was handsome, and her daughter was sweet and cute. Both were extremely beautiful. Not a single flaw could be seen in their facial features. On the streets abroad, people often came over to strike up a conversation with them, and there were even people who wanted to invite them to do some advertisements. Mariana reached out and touched her oval face, still feeling that her two babies did not inherit her genes adequately. 'Or shall I say, they don't look like me at all!' thought Mariana, which led her to think of the father. Upon thinking of the man who almost ruined her life, Mariana felt cold sweat trickling down her back. "Mommy, what are you thinking about? Should we hail a taxi?" A small hand gently pushed Mariana, and she then heard Jeremy's calm and pleasant voice. Mariana immediately snapped out of her trance. She squatted down to adjust Jeremy's collar, patted Carolina's head, and said, "Remember what I told you. When we get to Aunt Janet's house, you must say hello nicely, OK?" "Don't worry, Mommy. We'll greet Janet politely!" Jeremy laughed like a little imp, his bright eyes sparkling with mischief. Mariana hailed a taxi and led two children inside. The taxi drove off from Airport Avenue, heading towards the city center.
