The Weary Traveler

803 Words
It was almost eleven pm. I had walked again for what seemed like forever. Most places were closed. I just wanted food and a bed. I came upon a small plaza with a place that looked open, so I ventured across the large parking lot to the store front. It was a large brick building. I could hear loud music playing and lights flickering inside the dark windows. I ran my fingers through my hair, to be sure I was presentable as I approached the door. I reached for the door but before I could open it a large male opened it for me. “ID.” He said, but I was not sure if I had heard him right. “Pardon?” I asked. “ID.” “Oh, ah.” He raised his eyebrows at me, “Driver’s license,” “Oh, I do not drive.” I frowned at him. “Then State issued ID?” I wracked my brains; trying to understand, but didn’t think I had what he was looking for. “No one under 21 allowed.” “Oh, I am only 20 but I was just looking for a place to grab a bite.” “Sorry, that an’t here.” I glanced around, there was a place next door that said it had the #1 pizza in town but it was closed. I turned and started walking away. I was so tired; I had walked this morning, then between train stops and now I have walked a great deal more. I felt like finding a dark place and curling up for a nap. “Excuse me, miss!” I heard from a different voice behind me, making me turn. “Sorry but I couldn’t help overhearing on my way out…well, if you’re looking for a place to eat, there aren’t many open now but there is an all night dinner. When you leave the parking lot, turn left, go a couple of miles and on your left there will be a diner. I can’t think of the name, but you’ll see it all lit up.” “Thank you.” I said with a warm smile, meaning it. ‘Ugh’ Mia groaned in my head, ‘Two more miles.’ ‘I know, I know.’ I turned to leave, walking through the large parking lot, heading back towards the entrance. “Hey!” I heard yelled again behind me, making me turn back towards the male I had just spoken to. “You on foot?” I looked down at my feet. On foot? Then I looked back up at him. I must have looked confused. “No car?” He took a few steps closer to me, making me want to back up, but I held my ground, he was only human, after all. I hesitated, “No, I do not drive.” He looked towards the street and the way he said for me to go, “I could ah, give you a ride. It’s kinda on my way home.” I looked towards the street, then back at him. I considered running but he seemed harmless enough. Of course, we were in a fairly dark parking lot, late at night. I was tired and hungry, so my judgement was probably skewed a bit. ‘Well, we know hes human, right?’ Mia asked, ‘How dangerous can he be?’ I watched the human male for a little bit. He was shorter than every male in my pack back home. In fact, if I was wearing my really high, sexy shoes, he probably wouldn’t be much taller than I am. The only way a human could get the better of us was wolfsbane or silver. ‘Oh, we can take him without a doubt!’ Mia was offering me encouragement. ‘You’re just tired.’ I scolded her. ‘And hungry.’ She said with a yawn. “Are you sure it isn’t too much trouble?” I asked before stepping closer. “No trouble at all, come on.” He motioned for me to follow him. He pressed a button on his keys, making a car chirp and lights flash. “Right here.” He said giving me a warm smile. He was standing under the light pole in the parking lot where I could see him better. He didn’t look much older than I am, he had light brownish hair that touched the back of his neck, light brown eyes and a warm boyish smile. ‘He's kind of cute.’ Mia said, raising her eyebrows at our ride. I just groaned at her in return and tried pushing her out of my mind. Just enough to concentrate but not too far, in case I needed her should something go wrong.
