It was almost ten am when I left my suite to head to my father’s office. I had skipped breakfast, which I never do. I always at least make an appearance at meal time.
Even after Jullian’s crude behavior, I had planned on attending breakfast as if nothing happened prior to talking with my father, but in light of what Natalia had told me, I skipped breakfast. I could not bare to see Jullian right now.
As I approached my father’s office, his usual guards were stationed around the hallway. I could hear male voices and cringed inwardly, what if Jullian was in with my father?
The guards were not paying much attention, they saw me and since I was not a threat, paid me no mind.
I ducked into the small storage room beside my father’s office. Natalia and I realized when we were little that the vent on the floor was close to my father’s office and sometimes, we could hear what was being said.
The storage room has gotten cluttered over the years, so I quietly moved a couple boxes and sat on the floor, close to the vent. I scooted down to hear better.
“Where is this coming from?” I could hear irritation in my father’s voice.
“I am sorry Alpha….” I recognized the voice, it was that of our Beta, Bernard.
“No, I want to hear from Brutus.” My father cut Bernard off.
'Why is Brutus in with our father?' Mia chimed in.
“Alpha.” I heard Brutus say, hearing the he had for my respect for my father.
“I started feeling different for her several months ago. I do believe there is a chance she could be my fated mate.”
“Why would you say that?” My father asked. I could still hear the irritation in his voice, he was clearly angry.
“The rumors say that the fated mate pairing, the ones that lived within the same pack, they felt feelings developing for each other before she turned of age. I believe that may be what is happening.”
‘Oh my goddess, Mia. Brutus has a thing for Natalia?’ I said to my wolf Mia.
‘Aurora, I’m not sure you have that right, Natalia is only 16, she isn’t even close to her 21st birthday.’
I thought about Mia’s words for a few moments before shifting my focus back to the conversation, not wanting to miss anything important.
“Oh dear Brutus, rumors are just that, rumors. You cannot hold any truth in the whisper of rumors.”
“With all due respect, Alpha, I had thought the same until last night. I was overcome with an urge to protect her.”
‘Did something else happen last night?’ I said to Mia, full well knowing she would not have an answer.
“Of course you wanted to protect Aurora, you are the future Beta, it is in you to want to protect the pack members, especially the females.” My father said dismissively.
‘Oh sh*t.’ I said to Mia when it finally occurred to me that they were not talking about Natalia or any other female, they were talking about me. I could hear Mia laughing in my head, she was rolling around, laughing hysterically.
Bernard, our current Beta, Brutus’ father spoke next.
“Could you just put off making a commitment with Jacques at least until after Aurora’s 21st birthday?” He pleaded.
It was silent for far too long before my father answered. “The agreement was made many years ago, it cannot be broken.” He paused, “In fact, if it turns out Aurora is your fated mate, you must reject her right away.”
Bernard's' usually sound of respect diminished when he raised his voice at my father.
“What? You would go against the Moon Goddess, just because of an agreement you made many years ago?”
I heard a loud bang that sounded as if my father slammed his fists down, “You dear question your Alpha? What makes you think I would allow my daughter, the daughter of an Alpha and of a Luna, the daughter of the Alpha Martel be mated with a Beta?”
“You are saying Brutus is not good enough?” I heard Bernard say in a booming voice.
I could take no more, I needed to speak to my father now and their conversation was about to take a very ugly turn.
