Old promises

Kye didn't say anything. He just watched me moving around my house in silence. I looked over my shoulder at him and once again I could see the worried lines on his face. "I'm okay Kye," I said to him. "I know, but Brayden is sending me crazy messages." He looked at me like he was puzzled. "About me?" "Yeah, he says Luna and Alpha used their alpha tone with you, and you didn't respond. How is that possible, Jess? Only an Alpha could resist. You have no wolf." Kye pointed out, "Yeah, I know," I rolled my eyes. I did not need that reminder. "Jess," he said, looking me up and down, "maybe you should take a shower and try to sleep." "Kye, are you here as a friend or a guard?" I asked. "Both," he said with no hesitation, "just not sure why." "What do you mean?" I asked, "It means Brayden has been acting crazy since the night you left. After I spent nearly two hours tracking you in the woods to Alpha Benton's territory, I circled back." He looked at me and for the first time gave a wicked smile, "Did you cross his territory without permission, Jess?" I bit my bottom lip and nodded, "Girl you are nuts," he gave a laugh and I couldn't but laugh a little too as he continued to shake his head, "Jess, you never think you just act. It's dangerous," He was right. I was not thinking but I was so upset. I nodded in agreement. He rubbed his temples, which was something he did when aggravated. "When I circled back to the pack house they wouldn't let me in. I was given orders to go keep an eye on you from my dad, which was odd because I could see Brayden over his shoulder and he looked messed up." "Kye, can I trust you?" I asked, "Of course you can," Kye said, "I think Brayden killed my dad," I blurted out, Kye's eyes bulged as he threw his hands up in surrender, "are you crazy?" He whispered, "Jess you can't say things like that Goddess!" "The alpha was going to cremate my parents. My dad's heart was gone and Evelyn's neck was slit. What car accidents cause those types of injuries?" I stared at him as he gawked at me, "You can't say stuff like that without proof, Jess," "I knew I shouldn't have said anything to you. You are with them in this, aren't you? I get it he's your best friend, and I am just a girl with no wolf, no parents, no best friend, and no mate," I tried to hold back my tears, but it was no use. They flowed down my cheek. Kye stood gathering me in his arms,"I am for what is right. I will protect you Jess." Leaning into his hug, I felt so good, almost like when my dad hugged me, safe. His hard muscular body felt so...good and his scent. Wait, what the hell was I doing? This was Kye, my best friend's little brother, and my mate's best friend and future Beta. I was embarrassed as I pulled away. Yes, Kye was all kinds of sexy, but it was weird that I would pick this moment to think of him that way. Maybe it was the way his hand rubbed my back or the heat from his breath. "Jess, put on your shoes," Kye said. I looked up at him and noticed his full lips and wondered what it would feel like to be kissed by him. He looked torn for a moment as he brushed my hair away from my face, clearing his throat. "Where are we going?" He looked like he wanted to say something or do something..." He looked me in the eyes and then in a husky voice said, "The salvage yard. There's only one in town. Let's go find that proof." And with that, he walked away. Why am I disappointed he didn't kiss me? Kye's POV What the hell had Brayden got me into? I had stepped away from Jess before she felt my erection. I went into the bathroom, closing the door behind me, 'holy s**t! Xan I think she wanted us to kiss her.' I said to my wolf, 'Her scent is delicious. I think she wanted more than a kiss.' Xan confirmed, 'Ugh! Why now? Now she notices me, are you freaking kidding me?' I growled. I had been in love with Jessica Fiona Martin for as long as she had been goo-goo-eyed over Brayden. She was beautiful, and smart, yet strong and fast. Which made her slightly awkward, but that was why I loved her forever. When my sister was playing with dolls, and Jess would tire, she was as fun to be with as the boys. We often went to the creek and dug up our bate to fish with. She didn't get all squirmy with worms and she loved challenges. To this day, she has caught the biggest trout I'd ever seen. Once, when we were kids, I asked her, "Do you like playing with dolls?" She looked at me and said, "Well, it's practice, right?" "For what?" I asked, "When I get married one day," She had said as we tossed rocks into the water. "Gross," I had said to her, "I'm never getting married, all that kissing stuff is disgusting," I had declared. Jessica gave me the most serious look ever. Then she wiped her muddy hands on her shorts, walked up, grabbed my hair, so I couldn't move, and kissed me long and hard. "Ouch!" I cried when she released the handful of my hair, "Why did you do that!" "Shut up cry baby." She shoved me, "If Brayden does not marry me when we grow up you are Kye Grimes! I put a lot of thought into this and you will not ruin it! And you're going to kiss me too." She poked me in the chest, picked a rock up, tossed it in the lake, then like nothing happened she shoved me again and yelled, "Tag your it!" She took off running with my heart, and I'd been chasing her ever since. Brayden never showed a true interest in Jess. Not saying there was no attraction. He had made comments about her long legs before, which got him punched in the chest. Brayden noticed all the girls. Jess stood out though, because she was not as easy as others in every way. Brayden had nearly half of the she-wolves in th packs Vcard. Jessica held on to her virginity and even when he asked her to be his mate, she still hadn't had s*x with him even though she said yes. Which meant I still had a chance because she didn't have Brayden's mark. Normally, I would say no girls should come between me and my boy Brayden, Bro's over ho's, but Jess was no ho and Brayden had broken the bro code when he went for Jess, knowing I was completely in love with her, even though he did apologize saying he was getting pressure from his dad. Everyone thought that since Jess was so strong her wolf would be powerful, but then it didn't come. I thought for sure he would dump her like a bad habit but, no, Brayden had started to truly care for her. He didn't even care about the fact that she had no wolf. I was coming around to the idea of them being together because Jess was so happy. And then Jess left for three weeks over the summer. 2 weeks to do work for the council and one week' at her brother's pack, because he was getting married, and she was a bridesmaid. During this time, Brayden was always hanging around, which was not unusual, but he seemed to take a new interest in Malaysia. I was pissed. I even confronted Brayden about it and he completely denied it. I had caught them together a few times since, engaging in some intense conversation after, but nothing too crazy. A week before Jess was to return, I passed my sister's room, from the sounds Malaysia was making and the moans coming from Brayden, it was clear my suspicions were correct. That next morning they were both glowing. I was so disgusted with them when Brayden left I confronted Malaysia. "You guys alright this morning?" Our mom asked that morning, "Great," Malaysia said, grinning from ear to ear. "Malaysia you're glowing, dear." She smiled, "I don't think I have ever seen you like this." Malaysia had laughed happily and had it been anyone else I would have been happy for her, but Jess was her best friend. "Look at her Kye," my mother instructed. Malaysia looked at me, noticing the scowl, "What's wrong Kye," "Um, I'm just hoping you remember this glowing feeling you're having, and I hope it's worth losing your best friend over when she finds out you slept with her mate. Your gross and I hope Jess kicks your slutty ass." I said sharply, "KYE! That's no way to speak to your sister! She is not that type of girl! She would never!" Mom turned and looked at Malaysia and guilt was written all over her face, "Awe no Malaysia say it is not so," Mom looked so disappointed in Malaysia, she choked back tears, "Malaysia how could you?" Mom had said she and Malaysia had burst into tears. The girls were so emotional. When I confronted Brayden it turned into an all-out brawl and, of course, he won, but I got my point across. We didn't speak for a whole month after that and during that time Jess had returned, and they had both told her nothing! Two years, this had gone on behind her back and for two years I watched the girl I loved get played with by my sister and her mate. So the other night, when everything had gone down, I was the one who had texted her to come over from Brayden's phone. It was late and the two thought everyone was sleeping. They had no idea Jess was there as they went at it. I thought Jess would get mad and confront them, but no, instead she stood there broken. I had to get her out of there. I felt bad because I couldn't stand watching them treat her like that or keep their dirty secret any longer. Brayden had tried to confide in me, but I shut him down. In a few weeks, he would be twenty-one. Then he would be forced to make the choice. To be honest, I wanted it to be my sister. Knowing now that Brayden may have killed Jessica's dad. Well, Brayden had lost the choice, no way Jess would want him. The problem was Brayden claimed to love them both and was relentless. Jess intrigued Brayden as she always had and now, after her not responding to the alpha tone, he was even more intrigued. I heard a knock at the door and opened it. Jess was staring at me with those big brown eyes, "Are we okay, Kye?" She asked softly, I don't know why I did it. I just couldn't resist. I grabbed a handful of her hair and kissed her. It felt so good, and she didn't push me away. When we finally came up for air, I searched her lust-filled eyes for regret, "You promised that if you didn't marry Brayden back in fourth grade you would marry me. Does the offer still stand?" She looked surprised, and she laughed. I loved her goofy laugh. "You remember that," she said, putting a hand on my cheek, "Yeah," She smiled at me and whispered, "Old promise, I see you Kye," and I bent down and kissed her again. 'Xan, finally she sees me!' I said to my wolf, 'Took her long enough,' Xan huffed, but I could feel that he was pleased too. In the end, she will be ours.
