Meet The Family
I hate them! They don't have to do the hard stuff, they don't have to lose their families!" "Damien calm yourself. We can't help that all the humans remember is when we killed them for food and fun. We have fought hard to get where we are today." "And who put these inferior cowards in charge of our destiny? They don't seem heartbroken that Luther lost his life today, I bet these things don't even know what he did for them!" "Keep your voice DOWN Damian" Vincent growled at his younger brother. "It doesn't matter that they know at least they don't fear us anymore." "Oh that makes me feel so much better Vinnie. It was better when we were respected. You gave away our birthright to make these savages feel cozy" Vincent gave his brother a rare angry look but, it didn't bother him as his own anger laughed at what they had all become. Humans had learnt about their existence when a careless Vampire had gone on a killing spree. Both Humans and The Undead alike had come together to find the menace. They should have been torn apart and made further enemies, the hunt for the killer had made them start to understand each other. Slowly both sides had forgotten the days of The Hunters and The Vampire 'problem'. After nearly twenty years of living in peace, The Vampires were heroes to all. They fought fires and held most of the jobs in The Police and Military services. They even went to war to spare the lives of their human compatriots. "Damien you can't just say things like that. Especially not in a bar full of people and Pires man." "Oh so we can't even have an opinion anymore. We used to rule every corner of this earth and now all we do is risk our lives to protect those who hate us?!" "We are heroes to them and you know it. Stop making a big deal out of nothing man. Next thing you know they gonna drag you to The Cops."Markus chimed in knowing he can usually calm his cousin down better then his brother could. "Enough!" Vincent said breaking his usual cool and making it clear that even though he had given up his throne, he was still their king and he was still in charge. "We are here to meet with a still sceptical Police Detective. It's obvious that every one of us is a suspect and your teenage rampage will do nothing to convince them." "You expect me to make nice with a bloodbank fine, but you can't make me like them." Damien said as he slumped back in the booth and crossed his arms. Samantha entered the bar and the smell of stale beer and cigarette ash filled her nostrils. She resented having to be here with these Psychos. Vampires might not kill people anymore but they once did. If you take a Tiger out the wild and feed it, it won't harm the zoo staff but, it was still a wild animal that could rip your throat out tamed or not. It helped that the Tigers in question were gorgeous as hell, as many Psychos tended to be. Damien sat up as Samantha approached their booth. His throat felt dry as he shook her hand. He already didn't like being around her and now she was the one he would have to work with. To prove they were not all the same and because of their contacts, Vincent had gathered his Clan to help the Humans find and stop a very intelligent and unknown killer. It went alot deeper than just murder. This beast was ripping at the fragile fabric of trust and unity they had fought to achieve with the Humans. Samantha wanted the sulky one to not be her new Vampire informant and she fought to control her reaction when he was introduced as indeed her new partner. She didn't think brown eyes could bore into your soul until she met Damien's gaze. At least he looked equally as shaken by her presence as she was by his. This wasn't the first time meeting a few Vampires, this group were somehow different. Vincent had been their king and he still had an air of nobility about him. Sitting in the booth she felt like a juicy deer they all wanted to eat. Damien in particular looked a little to thirsty for her liking. "Pleased to meet you " Damien added with his usual dry sarcasm but found to his dismay that he actually meant it. She was only a human but had a beauty that the best of his kind would be envious of. "Likewise " Samantha said with a forced smile that turned into a real one. She reminded herself that Vampires used charm to manipulate people. She was here to prove herself as a new Detective and NOT be this moody Vampires plaything. After a few drinks and exchanging information they had gathered on both sides, it was time to meet 'The Family'. Samantha expected to be whisked away to a huge mansion owned by generations of Vampires. Instead they stopped at a beautiful log cabin that was built into a mountain. You wouldn't even notice it as a waterfall hid the house from sight. Instead of the dark, depressing interior it was a dream house filled with light and personality. Couples sat and watched films with popcorn. Samantha looked out the large lounge windows that let the sun in at the children playing together. "We don't melt in the sun you know" Gabriella said as she moved closer to hug Samantha. "You must excuse our youngest member she's a hugger" Damien said with a disapproving sigh "Especially when we get beautiful guests" Gabriella said as she looked Samantha up and down. "Easy Ella we don't want to scare the Detective off from the start please" Vincent said from behind them. Samantha turned to see nearly thirty people stand behind Vincent. They were of all ages and cultural backgrounds and they stood together as family. Maybe they did have a few more things figured out than the Humans did. "I'm shadow " A man said who she hadn't even seen till then. "So you are! Oh I mean I..." Samantha said and felt terrible. She grew up in a mixed household and it had taken her all of five minutes to sound racist.
