Chapter 1 - Maisie POV
The sun shined over the peaks of the mountains, it was beginning to melt the snow that had made a home on them. It was early morning when I stepped outside the pack house door. A sweet smell in the air meant spring was upon us. "Maisie!" My name flooded my ears from behind me. Before I could turn around, I knew the voice belonged to my best friend, Orion. He was soon to be Alpha Bellamy's Beta, his second in command. We had all grown up together, Orion, Bellamy, and my best friend Niyla. All four of us were born in the same year on the same day, just hours apart from each other. It was written within an old prophecy by the elders that four werewolves would come together and become the ultimate rulers of our homeland, saving it from those who wish to do us harm. However, we weren't those people, that prophecy wasn't written about us. We were just twenty years old, and none had found our destined mates. All we were worried about was partying and living our lives before they changed forever.
"Yo! Maisie wait up!" Orion said when he reached for my arm to get my attention. I didn't realize I was still standing in the doorway of the house. "Oh s**t, hey. I was spaced out." I said, chuckling, looking up at him. He stood much taller than me, but everyone did. His height was at least two inches past six feet. I know that because Bellamy was at least five. I was always taller than them before they hit a growth spurt when we were twelve and first met our wolves. Orion stood in front of me and started going on about how he and Bellamy were going down to the river for the first swim of the warm season. "Come on, go and get that sour attitude changed into a bikini, and meet us at the garage in twenty!" My eyes rolled quickly turning on my heels running up to my room on the sixth floor, that's where the family quarters were. Passing a few doors that were a mix of offices and bedrooms, I went through the door of mine that stood at the end of the hall. Searching through my drawers, I settled on a simple black bikini. It had emerald green gems designing the string between my breasts, and the bows around my waist.
Back down the stairs and tossed my bag over my shoulder while shoving my towel inside it as I walked across the property. Seeing the two familiar male figures from behind, I laughed, it was clear as day they were bickering about something. Turning my head, I saw my best friend walking up waving at me. "Hey!" I said, smiling, wrapping my arms around her as she did in return. Niyla and I have been inseparable since birth. Some say we were yin and yang born by different mothers, the sun and moon goddesses. We were the same height, she and I were never considered skinny among the other she-wolfs, but we didn't care. We were the fastest and strongest due to our bloodline. First to get on the training field and the last to leave was our motto. Niyla's dark hair sat just below her shoulders, she usually kept it up in a bun during training, but I loved it when she let it down. "I'm so ready to swim, Ember has been whining so loud with the weather getting warmer," Niyla said to me as we walked up to meet the boys at the jeep. Ember was her wolf, mine was named Sage, and I felt her stir inside me at the mention of Ember. Yet, she stirred even more as I felt her tension with Volko when Bellamy turned towards us. 'Please calm down' I said to her through our mind link. 'I can't help but get excited, it's not our fault that his dumb human soul has not yet, felt the bond.' My eyes rolled, I didn't want to be reminded that I knew of our mate bond, but he didn't. 'Why don't you simply tell him? Maybe that will snap the bond in place?' Sage questioned me. It wasn't that I hadn't thought about it, I didn't want it to be forced, I wanted Bellamy to know on his own, so it was real.
"Well, well, well, it's nice to see familiar faces outside a war room." The sound of Bellamy's voice and his arm dropping around my shoulders calmed both me and Sage. I could feel Sage and Volko conversing back and forth, but that was normal for wolves in our clan, they were able to mind link without the human part of us hearing it. My arm was draped around his waist, his scent was my favorite thing. It was a mixture of fresh pine and his musky cologne that I could pick out of any room despite the bond. "Less talking, more swimming," I said, jumping into the passenger side of Bellamy's jeep. Looking over at Orion, I winked, "Also, I call it shotgun!" We all burst out in laughter as we loaded up, and the vehicle began moving toward the middle of the pack's land.
The wind blew through my hair while we drove along the dirt road. I could smell the lake water coming up close the further the jeep got to the coastline. Feeling the shift to park, I opened the door and slid out of the jeep, helping my friends grab the coolers and chairs, and walked towards the water. Taking a deep breath, we set up as we soaked up the sunlight. Cracking open a can of soda, I stood at the edge of the water while it flowed over my feet. I watched the water move like it had a mind of its own. Some legends say that there's a species of people that lives under the water by night and on land by day, but only in the southern parts of our world. "Can you guys believe we're going to be twenty-one next week?" Niyla said with the biggest grin, looking over at Orion. They were mates, they both knew it. Well, we all knew it because we had to listen to it for the past two years, since our eighteenth birthday. "I'm assuming we're throwing a massive bash?" I asked her, raising an eyebrow, I already knew the answer before she answered with that huge grin on her face. "I'm thinking we use the ballroom in the pack house, it's big enough to hold a huge party, and we know your dad will let us have it there." She said looking at me. I rolled my eyes, "I'll ask him later when I get home." I set my drink down, pulled the t-shirt that was covering my body, and winked at them all before turning and diving out into the water swimming and floating as my thoughts wandered.
