Chapter twenty - They know

2082 Words
Kevin's POV: Our deliveries slimmed to zero. I think they have suspicions about us. There is no other reason why we don't make as many deliveries as before. I don't think they know our real job, which is good. Now, it's not the time to mess with them. I have sent the proof to the station. My boss there will take care of this. I should say thank you to my daughter. She helped me a lot, even if I didn't want her to do it. As her dad, I'm allowed to be worried for her. The problem is that she won't stop. I know her. Sadly, we are the same. She will continue doing this until everything is done. I think she has to do it for her friend. Adam has no idea what his dad is doing. That is if Lizzy hasn't told him, but I don't think she can keep this away from him for so long. This doesn't matter. I need to figure out what to do. We need to catch Devan before he knows about my job. Otherwise, I might not see the sun again. The thing is that he won't stay in the same place for long. If he knows someone is chasing him, this man will hide. It would've been good if he had an insider. Adam is a good choice, but I can't mess another kid with this. It's enough that Lizzy knows about it. Fewer people here are better for us. I hope that when the time comes, no one will get hurt. I woke up and went to work. My team was there, but the tables were empty. They have moved. It might be at the place where Lizzy took the video. It's a possibility. I will ask her for the address. Sadly, there is one problem. Maybe I should say a big one. Places like this one are many in the town. I have no idea which one they are. I keep my phone in me. In case something happens. My boss can track it. I'm not sure if it will help, but it's better than nothing. I called to check on Lizzy. She didn't pick up. Maybe she has a class. I have her schedule on my phone. She gave it to me. I don't call her at school, but I wonder if she knows something. I texted her to call me when she could. I called our boss. He said we could take the day for ourselves. Something is going on here. I think they know the truth. We are in trouble. The question is how much they know. We are not drug dealers. That is true. I prefer to be on the side of the good ones. - Is everything ok? You look worried. - Nick said - I'm fine. - Are you sure? - We are busted. - Don't worry. Soon, this will be over. I'm sure about this. - So? He might go after Lizzy. She is the one who told us everything. - Relax. She is a clever girl and won't let him do anything to her. - I won't be sure. He is unpredictable. - Lizzy is eighteen. Let her feel like an adult. - But she is not. Lizzy is still a kid. - She is not like her brother. - Dave said - This has nothing to do with that. Why do we always have to talk about this? - Because you don't want to listen to us. - She is my daughter, and I can do whatever I want with her. - I wonder when you will believe your words. - We have to arrest Devan. - How? We have no idea where he is. It's not that simple. - He knows we are not who we pretend to be. If we don't do it soon, no one will see us anymore. - That is not true. - John said - Don't you want to see your wife again? - Of course, I want. Everyone wants this. - Then? - What is the plan? - Lizzy will tell me the address where she took the video. There is a chance they are still there. - And? - We'll call for help and arrest them. - I know you are worried about Lizzy, but we need a good strategy. Failure is not an option. - Nick said - I'm sorry. Lately, I can't sleep well. - It's ok. Girls are always special for fathers. - It's not only that. - How about we go home? Talk with Lizzy and tell us if you have news. - Of course. - Don't stress too much. We need you to be in good shape. - I'll try, but I can't promise anything. Since we don't have to work today, I can go home. Lizzy sent me the address but told me not to go. She finished her classes and went to check the place. There was no one. She can't keep doing my job. It's dangerous for her. I asked if we could meet. She agreed to come home. I don't know what my next move should be. The boys and I have to be careful. After some time, she was here. Lizzy brought food again. I have told her not to do it. I can take care of myself. Well, I understand her. It's a habit. I appreciate her help, but I'm afraid something might happen to her. - We have talked about the food. - This doesn't matter. I don't know where he is. - Devan? - Yes. Adam said he didn't come home last night. - That is interesting. He probably slept at a friend's house. - Come on. I know you don't believe what you just said. - True. - Why are you not at work? - They don't give us work anymore. I think they know the truth. - What? How? - I have no idea. - Do they know about your real job? - I don't think so. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been here. - Dad, don't talk like that. Nothing will happen to you. I won't permit it. - Lizzy, you need to stop messing with this. It's not safe. - I don't care. I will do everything to help you. - Why don't you want to listen to me? - Because if I do it, I will always wonder what would've happened if I helped you. - Lizzy, please. - No. We were separated for so long. I'm not letting this happen again. - What? - Can I stay here for the night? Please. - Look, I. - Please, dad. I want to stay with you. - What about your mom? - She doesn't mind. Let's say that I told her to send Ben with Noah's dad. That way, they can be alone. - You are a little devil. - Who says it? - Excuse me. I'm not like that. - For sure. Only a little bit. - Be careful with the words. - Can I stay here? - Do I have a choice? - Thank you. We spent the whole afternoon talking. I won't tell her, but this might be one of the happiest days of my life. I want to keep her safe, and she wants to keep me safe. We look alike. There is a reason why people keep saying it. I decided to make dinner. Luckily, I have everything I need. Until the case is solved, no one can see us together. It's for her good. If something happens to her, I will never forgive myself. - Do you want to help me with dinner? - Sure. What are you making? - Chicken. - Only. - I will put some vegetables. - There better be rice. - Do you like it? - It's not my favorite, but I won't eat only vegetables. I'm not in kindergarten. - When did you grow up that much? - Can I ask you something? Please don't get offended. - What is it? - Do you still love my mom? - Lizzy. - Answer me. Mom got mad at me. - Why do you want to know? - Because it's visible that none of you forgot what happened. I'm not asking you to go back with her. - I will never do it. Noah is my friend. - Will you answer me? - I do, but not the way you think. She is my friend. I have put my work over everything. - Even over me? - When I was younger, you weren't part of my plans. - What? - I'm sorry, but it's true. I could barely take care of your mom. Taking care of two people is not easy. - Then why did you do it? - Lizzy. - Tell me. - Because I loved her. Look, that was a long time ago. Things have changed. - But you still care. She was the one for you. - I think you need to stop with the questions. - Why? - It's better if you don't know everything. - Fine. Let's cook. I'm getting hungry. - Good. Lizzy and I prepared the food together. She didn't complain about the taste. We kept talking until she went to bed. I don't know why I deserved this, but I'm so happy. I wanted her to be with me, and she is here now. I went to my room for a quick shower. I didn't have much time today. When I came back, Lizzy was in my bed. I know she is not sleeping, but I'll play the game. I didn't have a chance to do it when she was little. She might be eighteen, but she is still a little girl to me. I kissed the top of her head, and she snuggled. For some reason, it feels nice. - The guestroom is yours. If you want, I'll make your bed. - There is no need for that. I'll stay here. - Don't you think you are too old to sleep with your parents? - No one will know. Also, I never had a chance to do it with you. - Look, I'm sorry. I didn't want things to end like that. - It's ok. I understand. Why do you keep doing it? I see you are motivated. - Before, it was for your mom. Now, it's because of you. - Why? - Someone told me they sell drugs in schools. I didn't want you to end up with some. - That will never happen. - I didn't say you have to take them. Someone might put them in your drink. - Dad, you have way too many scenarios in your head. - she said, chuckling - Let me be worried. - Ok, ok. You can be worried about me. - Thank you. - Were you the same with my mom? - Lizzy. - What? It's an ordinary question. - Can you stop digging in the past? Please. Your mom and I have moved on. - But I want to know what you two used to have. - Why? - So I can have the same. Well, without the breakup. - she said, and I laughed - Take your time on this. Adam won't run away. - Hold on. I didn't say it would be him. - He is a good guy. - So? We are only friends. - For now. - Dad, don't be delusional. I like Adam, but only as my friend. - You said it, not me. - I think I want to sleep. - Why? So you don't have to talk to me? - Exactly. Good night. Thanks for letting me stay here. - For you always. If I thought I was in paradise, I don't know what to say now. Not every father is lucky to have such a good relationship with their daughter. The only problem is that we look alike too much. This might get us in trouble. On the other side, this can help us. I texted Nia to make sure Lizzy had told her. I know she still doesn't tell her everything. After all, I want us to keep our good relations. My days are counted, but I believe it won't be the end. Something will happen. I want to survive because of Lizzy. She deserves me to spend more time with her. I hope that everything will end well.
