Lizzy's POV:
Dad is in trouble, thanks to me. All I wanted was to help him. My intentions were good. I thought I was careful. It looks like this wasn't enough. Devan knows someone looked through his things. It's about time for him to find out it was me. I can't believe it. I don't know what will happen now. The worst thing is that he knows me. We have met before through Adam. He still doesn't talk to me. I try every day in school. I have no idea what else I have to do. His dad is a criminal. There are so many evidences. Dad told me to talk to him after everything was done. I don't know when this will happen. I got a lower grade on my last test. Mom thought something was going on. We fixed our relations, but not completely. She wasn't happy about my grades. I have so many things in my head that school is the last thing I need. I can't escape from it. I have to study as well. I wish someone could do my work instead of me. When I was doing it with Adam, things seemed easy. Now, we don't talk to each other. It's my fault. I shouldn't have told him this. I mean, even if it's the truth. He might forgive me, but I won't hear it. No, this won't happen. I won't let his dad destroy my life. Somehow, I will find a way to save my dad. I hope that when I do that, it won't be too late.
I woke up in a weird mood. It's like something will happen today. I texted my dad when I woke up. He said everything was fine. This might not be about him. I made a mistake, and I have to take the consequences of it. I wish we could get over this. I have no idea what is happening. Devan is after us. I'm sure about this. The question is if he knows that I know. I can ask Adam, but he has no idea what is happening. I don't know how to make him stay away from his dad.
I'm in the hall. My class finished ten minutes ago. Adam is over there. He doesn't want to talk to me. I have to do it, but it won't be easy. Sadly, he is like me. Both of us are stubborn. Maybe this is why we were friends. I believe our friendship is not over. We need some time to sit and talk. Since he won't make a move, I will do it. I took my books for the next class and walked up to him. He has to listen to me.
- Hey.
- What?
- Can we talk?
- No.
- Please.
- I said no. Now, you can leave me alone.
- Adam.
- I said something.
- Why are you still mad at me? I didn't lie.
- What?
- I meant what I said. You don't know everything.
- As if you do.
- Yes, I do. I have proof about your dad.
- What proof?
- I can't tell you now, but you should believe me. I will never lie to you.
- What is my dad doing?
- When everything ends, I will tell you.
- Why can't you tell me now?
- Because I promised my dad. If you want to know something, you should find it alone.
- Tell me.
- Not now. I have other things to take care of.
- What is more important?
- My dad. Thanks to yours and my stupidity, we are in trouble.
- How? What happened?
- It's a long story. I will tell you that I went into some of his rooms.
- What? Lizzy! He forbade me.
- Yes, to you. Ne didn't tell me anything.
- What does he keep there?
- Huh?
- Tell me. I have been curious.
- His business. Maybe I should say illegal business.
- No way. I don't believe it.
- But you should. I guess he found out I had been there. At least that someone checked his laptop.
- Lizzy! Do you know what will happen?
- Yes, I do.
- I can't believe it. Is it that bad?
- He is guilty. That's all I will tell you.
- Of what?
- If you still care about me, you will move back with your mom. She might not earn much, but her money is clean.
- Won't you tell me?
- I have to go. I told you too much.
- Lizzy, please. If you tell me, I will forgive you.
- I think you already did it.
- I didn't say it.
- There is no need to. I can see it in your eyes. - I said and left
The soft eyes never lie. I also saw pain, but it wasn't from me. I think he finally understood the difference between his parents. His mom might not earn much money, but she loves him. I don't think his dad can show him the same. We talked until the rest of the school day. Finally, he stopped being mad at me. I have to tell him the truth. I promised my dad, but I might need Adam's help. He still lives in his dad's house. This will be useful. After school, we went home. Ben was already there, doing his homework.
- You have to tell me the truth. - Adam said
- I know, but you have to promise me not to tell anyone.
- Why?
- Because no one knows about this. Even my mom.
- Is it that bad?
- Yes.
- I promise. I won't tell anyone about this.
- Thanks.
- What is going on?
- I don't know how to tell you this in a better way, so I'll be direct with you.
- Ok, go on.
- Your dad is a drug dealer.
- What? That's impossible.
- It's not. I checked his rooms. It kept bugging me about how he could afford the house. I was sure it wasn't with his company. I found pills in one of his rooms. I checked his laptop. Technically, I hacked it.
- You did what?
- I had to. There were transactions for millions of dollars. It turned out that my dad has been searching for your dad for years.
- Hold on. Isn't your dad a dealer as well?
- This is the secret you have to keep.
- I promise.
- My dad is a police officer undercover as a drug dealer.
- What? So he is from the good ones.
- Yes. The big boss for who he was looking for is your dad. I have proof.
- I want to see it.
- Are you sure?
- Yes. Show me! I have to see it. I have to see the face of the man who lied to me for so long.
- Fine. Take my phone. - I said and gave it to him
He kept watching without saying anything. I could've hidden this, but it won't solve the problem. Adams needs to know who his father is. I need to know where his dad is. Only he can help me. I'm sure he can check when his dad comes home. Also, he can check when he goes to work. I think I know what my friend can do.
- I'm sorry.
- For how long do you know about this?
- Since the moment I met him, I knew there was something fishy about him. I started checking him.
- Why didn't you tell me?
- Because you weren't going to believe me.
- What will happen with him?
- I don't know, but he is in trouble. If the police catch him, your dad will be in jail for a long time.
- Can I do something to help?
- I think you can.
- What is it?
- I want you to check when your dad goes out in the morning and when he comes home at night.
- No problem. Anything else?
- Yes. Ask him if he could spend some time with you. I want to see what he will answer.
- If it's because of me.
- No. If he says no, you might get suspicious. For example, why is his job more important than you?
- I can say that.
- Get as much information as you can. When you are alone, call or text me.
- I will text you. He might hear my conversation.
- Look, I'm sorry about that.
- No, I'm sorry for not trusting you.
- If something happens, I will need your help again.
- Something like what?
- I don't know. Your dad is unpredictable.
- I wonder why my mom married him.
- Maybe he wasn't like that in the beginning.
- I doubt it.
- You said he left her because she wasn't earning much.
- That's what she told me.
- I believe it's true.
- We'll get him down together. I want to see this.
- I know you are mad, but be careful. Your dad can't understand that you know everything.
- Don't worry. He won't suspect anything.
- Don't go to any of his rooms unless I tell you.
- I get it.
- Good.
I offered Adam to stay with me for dinner, but he refused. I guess he wants to put the plan into action. Let's see what will happen. I stayed with Ben until the food was ready. Mom and I fixed our relationship. I didn't want to offend her. Maybe she doesn't like to talk about her relations with my dad. From now on, I won't say anything about that. Everyone was around the table. My parents were talking. I hope that Adam will play his part well. I don't want to risk his life.
- Lizzy, are you ok? You don't talk much.
- Lizzy. Hello.
- What?
- Are you ok? You are silent. - my mom said
- Yes, I'm fine. Don't worry.
- Are you sure?
- Yes. How are you?
- I'm fine. My day was good.
- Cool.
- Lizzy, I know you.
- I can't tell you anything about that.
- Why not?
- It's between Adam and me.
- Is something going on between you two?
- Not the way you think. I made him do something.
- Won't you share?
- Let's say he might move out from his dad's house.
- Why?
- Because he found out I was right.
- I don't understand.
- The story is long. The short version is that his dad is not who Adam thought he was.
- Who is he?
- I can't tell you. Forget that I said something.
- Does it have something to do with your dad? - Noah asked
- What? I didn't say that.
- But it's visible. You are worried for him.
- I'm not.
- Lizzy.
- Please, stop. I don't want to talk about this.
- If you have a problem, you can talk to us. We'll help you. - my mom said
- Thanks, but I'm fine. I don't need anything.
- Is Kevin fine? Did something happen to him?
- No!
- Ok, don't get mad.
- Stop asking me questions. Please.
- I won't say anything. Let's eat in peace.
- Thank you.
- I'm here for you.
- I know.
- Everything will be fine. Kevin knows how to take care of himself.
- Not always.
- What?
- Nothing. I'll be in my room if you need me. - I said and left
Adam texted me. His dad doesn't have time for him. I expected this to happen. Here is one more reason for my friend to move from there. Devan came home early today. We will check on him later. I don't know what else to do. Not many options have been left to me. I will think about a strategy. Before that, I should talk with my dad. He can tell me what to do. For now, it's better if I don't involve Adam in anything else. I don't want to risk his life because of me. It's enough that my dad and I are in trouble. I can't involve anyone else. I hope that this will be over soon.
