Chapter twenty-three - I will save you pt.2

2084 Words
Lizzy's POV: I have no idea where my dad is. I kept calling and texting him. There was no answer. I did what was needed. I went to the police station, but no one helped me. Dad's boss believes he will do everything alone. My intuition is not wrong. I know when he has a problem. I'm sure Devan has something to do with that. I asked his son for help. I couldn't tell him much because this is my job. If I do it, he will want to come with me. I can't take care of him. Adam has to trust me. It's not like he doesn't, but he can't always be around me. Honestly, I feel bad for him. I was supposed to tell him everything after all this, but I couldn't. That was the only way I could help him. I believe he will come back to live with his mom. I liked her. She is a nice woman. Also, she does her chores because of him. Adam is the only thing that left her. She has no one else. When this is over, I'll invite her for dinner at home. I think she and my mom can be good friends. They are not that different. I will talk with my mom when the time comes. Dad has to tell her the truth. I can't hide this from her anymore. She knows something is going on. I tried to avoid her questions, but it was getting hard. I hope that my dad won't get hurt until I save him. I was right. Devan holds my dad. I walked in through the back door. There were five people. I used some of the filled arrows. I hope they are not dead because this will be a murder. I was hiding behind a few barrels when two boys found me. They had a tight grip. I have no idea where they went. I couldn't use more arrows. Luckily, he didn't check my backpack. It's too risky. Sadly, he shot my dad. I should thank Adam. Otherwise, it would've been in his heart. Dad will be good. Well, once we get out of here. There is so much smoke here. I can barely breathe. I used the pads in my backpack to stop the bleeding from my dad. It's not like this is helping much. I had only two. I tied my sweatshirt around him. It might hurt him, but it will pressure the wound. This will be a temporary solution. We need to go out. I tried the backdoor, but Devan has locked it as well. The windows are too high. Adam can help me. He will lift me, and I will try to break them with the metal tray he used. - Adam? - Yes. - Can you lift me? - I think so. Why? - I will use the metal tray to break the windows. I'm too short to do it alone. - Ok, come here. - Thanks. - I said and hit the window - Did it work? - No. There isn't a single scratch. That's a tight glass. - Try again. - I am. It's not working. - I said and hut the window angrily, which made me drop the tray - Come down. It won't work. - We have to get out of here. There is too much smoke. - I said and started coughing - Lizzy. - What? - Your dad. - Dad! Hey, are you ok? - Go and save yourself. Leave me. - What? I'm not doing it. We... we'll be fine. I promise. - Take Adam and leave. Safe yourself. - No, I'm not going without you. - Lizzy. - No! Where is your phone? - I don't know. It's probably broken. - Adam? - I left mine at home to trick my dad. I'm sorry. - Damn it. Mine is gone as well. - Devan probably took it. - Devan? - He is not my dad anymore. - Finally, you opened your eyes. - Now, it's not the time for that. We have to leave. - How? I...I can't breathe. - I said and started coughing again - There is a hole in the roof. - my dad said - I see it, but we can't reach it. - Use the barrels. - How? I can't climb on them. Also, they are too heavy. - Lizzy. - Adam said - I don't feel well. - Hey, you can't give up. Lizzy. Where is your backpack? - I... I don't know. - Adam... take her away. - I can't. There... there is no exit. This is the end. - You... you can't... you can't give up. Not now. - I'm... I'm done. Dad, how is the wound? I think I have something in my backpack. I will try to. - I said and fell down What is going on? I hear voices. Is this my mom? And Noah? Grandma? Where am I? I can't see anything. It's so dark. I can hear them. Everyone is here. Hello? Where is Adam? Dad? I tried opening my eyes, but I couldn't. Something is stopping me. I have to find my dad. He is hurt. I have to help him. He got shot because of me. I failed. I couldn't save him. It's my fault that all this happened. I don't think he will forgive me. After some time, I saw a white light. - Lizzy. - Mom? - Hey, how are you? - Noah asked - I'm fine, thanks. - Good. - Mom, is everything ok? - Yes. - I'm sorry. I failed. I didn't want this to happen. I thought everything was fine. I had no idea he would do this. - I said and hugged her - Cool. - she said but didn't hug me - Mom, what is going on? Why are you so cold? - My hands are warm. - You know what I mean. Are you mad at me? - What do you think? - I had to do it. - No, you didn't. You had to stay at home, but no. You went there. For what? - No one wanted to help him. - This is not your job. The police should've done it. - They rejected me. I searched for their help, but they didn't listen to me. What else did I have to do? To let him get killed. - Maybe. - Mom! - What? At least you would've been saved. - I am. As you can see, I'm fine. - Are you sure? Look at what happened. - I don't care. - I said and got up - Where are you going? - To see my dad. - I said and saw Adam on the bed next to mine - Hey, you are awake. - Adam! Why the heck did you come? - I won't leave you alone. - You could've gotten hurt. - The same goes for you. - I know. - Go. We can talk later. - Are you sure? - I am. He needs you. - Thanks. I'll be back soon. - I said and left I went to the reception and asked for my dad. The woman told me he had an operation. What? I have to see him. I went to the room, but no one let me in. I have to see him. I want to know he is ok. If something happens because of me, I will never forgive myself. I kept waiting in front of the room until someone came. It was Noah. - Are you ok? - No. She is mad at me, isn't she? - Your mom is worried. Some people express that differently. - You don't need to defend her. She had been cold with me since I started hanging out with my dad. - This is not true. Give her some time to accept what happened. - How did you find out? - We saw it on the news. A journalist was filming live from a burning building. They showed the people coming out of it. - Did Ben see it? - No. - Don't tell him. I don't want him to see me like this. - Don't worry. - Are you waiting for Kevin? - the doctor asked - Yes. How is he? - He is in a coma. - What? Why? - He lost too much blood. We removed the bullet, but the loss was much. - I see. Will he be ok? I mean, will he wake up? - I can't say anything for now. We have to wait and see. The good news is that the operation was successful. - Thanks. - No problem. We'll put him in a room to keep control of him. - Can I see him? Please. - Yes, sure. The nurse will come soon. She will let you in. I have to go now. - Thank you. - I said, and he left - Everything will be fine. - Noah said - It's my fault. I did it. - You did what you could. I'm sure your dad will say the same. - But it wasn't enough. - No, it wasn't. It was more than enough. - It doesn't make me feel better. - I know. Noah and I stayed until the nurse let us see my dad. I wish I could change what happened, but I can't. Dad is hurt, thanks to me. I don't know what I can do to help him. I was sitting next to him when I felt a hand on me. It was his boss. He is the one who made me do all this. If they had helped me, that wouldn't have happened. He looked at me, but I didn't. This man doesn't deserve it. - Won't you look at me? - he asked - For what? It's your fault that all this happened. - I know. - You should've listened to me. Even the most experienced police officer can't handle everything alone. - What? Kevin is. - Noah said - Yes. He has to talk about this. It's a long story. - I see. - What was I supposed to do? - my dad's boss asked - Help me. That way, I wouldn't have been alone. - We are inspecting the place. - Woah. Great job. I hope you find something there, except for my fingerprints. - I said sarcastically - Lizzy. - I don't want to listen. If he dies, I will blame you. - I know you are mad. - Mad? I'm furious. You were the one who sent him on that mission. - Yes, but you were the one who started messing with this. Everything was fine before you came. - Yes, and there was zero progress. I found out who the big boss was. It was me, not you. - Fine, but you made mistakes as well. - I know. You don't need to remind me. - He will wake up. - Where is Devan? He escaped, didn't he? - No. He is in jail. - What? Really? - I asked and looked at him - Somehow, you managed to help. He could've killed him without anyone knowing. The fire helped to recognize what had happened. - So? - This will be your first and last time. - There will be more missions. - I don't know. For now, everything is clean in town. - For now. What about the next year? - We don't know. Your dad needs to wake up. - He won't do it, thanks to you. - Lizzy, I. - No. Just go away. I don't want to listen. - We'll talk again later. - he said and left I stayed with my dad for the night. Mom didn't come to check on me. I believe she is still mad at me. I won't deal with her right now. At least Adam is feeling well. He came to check on me. His mom came as well. She was happy that everything was over. Me, too. The question is about what will happen now. I won't let my dad go on another mission. He needs to recover. I won't lie. I liked this. It was dangerous, but it felt good. Helping people is not that bad. Now I know why he chose this job. Maybe one day, I can be like him. I hope that I won't make a wrong decision.
