Chapter twenty four - You need a rest

2090 Words
Kevin's POV: Devan trapped me. I guess he found out the truth about me. The surprising thing is that I was alone. None of my teammates were there. It's better that way. They don't need to get involved in this. It's not like they weren't. He knows I have told the police. The question is if he knows I am one of them. This doesn't matter. The end for me will come soon. The worst news is that Lizzy found me. I'm glad she is here, but she can't help me. Devan will finish her. I don't know what I will tell Nia. She will be mad at me. I have no idea if I will see her again. I'm the parent. I should keep her safe, but I can't. Lizzy won't listen to me. She does whatever she thinks about. I still want to know how she found me. I don't know where my phone is. It's probably broken. There is no way he will leave it turned on. The police will track it immediately. Well, if they are searching for me. I can't understand why she is here alone. My boss is not around. I know it. Something must have happened. The last thing I remember is that Devan set the place on fire. Then, he left. I have no idea what happened next. He shot me before that. Lizzy tried to help me. She is doing too much for me. At least Adam is helping her. I liked how he hit his dad. I hope that they will be fine. What day is it? I don't remember. I know I'm in hospital, but I have no idea for how long. How much time has passed? A few days? A few weeks? A month? I don't know. I woke up yesterday. There was a nurse in my room. The doctor came to check on me. He told me I would recover, but I needed more time. I should be at work. The more I try to remember, the more headache I have. What is going on with me? Someone needs to tell me. Currently, I'm in bed. The doctor didn't let me go. Hopefully, this will happen soon. I want to go home and talk with Lizzy and Nia. We need to sit and talk. Of course, Noah will be there. The whole time, he knew something was going on. He trusted me when no one else did. I owe him a lot. First, I need to get out of here. This won't happen until the doctor doesn't let me. The nurse brought me food and left. I was eating when someone came in. It was Lizzy. She looked tired and drained. It's my fault. - Hey, how are you? - I'm fine. What about you? - Same. - Lizzy, are you ok? You can share it with me. - Mom is mad at me. - She is not mad at you. Let's say that she has a different way of caring. - All I wanted was to help. - What about you? Something could've happened. - It doesn't matter. I'm glad that you are ok. - Your life is more important than mine. - That is not true. I will do everything to save you. - Why? - Because I care. You are my dad. I don't care what my mom thinks about you. - What does she think about me? - I believe she will blame you for all this. - I will be surprised if she doesn't. - When will you go home? I believe it won't be today. - You should ask the doctor. I won't go home soon. - You seem fine. - Not really. The wound has to be invisible. - This will take some time. - I know. - What will happen next? You can't go to work. - I have to. - But you need to recover. - I didn't say it would be immediately. Maybe after a month. I'm not sure. - Dad, please take care. Even if I want it, I can't be with you. I mean, all the time. - I should take care of you, not the opposite. - Then do it. - How? You are not letting me. The stubborn one should be me, not you. - About that. We need to talk. - What did you do? - Nothing. Your boss wants to talk to me. Will you bail me out of jail? - What? Lizzy, you won't go to jail. - I won't be so sure. - Why? Did something happen? - I don't know. I have a feeling about this. - I'm sure he only wants to ask you some questions. That's it. - I hope so. - Look. I will talk with him and tell you what he wants. - Thanks. Lizzy stayed with me for some time. Later, she went home. At least, this is what she told me. I finished the food from the nurse. I asked the doctor if I could go home, but no. I still can't do it. I watched something on the tv in the room. News is the last thing I want to listen to. The good movies probably ended, or they are during the night. After some time, there was a knock on my door. It was my boss. Lizzy told me he had to talk to her. Let's see what he wants from her. - How are you? - I have been worse. - Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't believe her. - You should've. - I know. Can I do something about it? - It's too late. Don't you think? - Look, I have to talk with her. - I know. She told me. Can I know what this is about? - She needs to answer some questions. - What are they? - I want you to be there, even if you are not in the room. - Why? - Because you are a police officer. I'm sure you don't know everything about her. - What do you mean? - We found some things. Before you think about it, I don't mean drugs. It's something else. - Like what? - She has to answer that. Also, in the building, we found some of Devan's people. They were dead. - How many? - Five people. - Maybe they died from the smoke. - We are waiting for the autopsy. I can't say anything yet. - Don't stress her. Please. - I won't, but she has some explanation to do. I will talk with her friend as well. - Adam? - Yes. After all, he is Devan's son. - The boy had nothing to do with that. - Maybe, but he was there. - Because he was worried for my daughter. - I want to know what happened. That's it. - Can Nia come as well? - What? This is not a party. - I know, but she is her mom. Lizzy is not telling her everything. - Like you did? - No comment. - I have to go and do the report. Take care. You need a rest. - Don't worry. I can't move. - Good. - he said and left I stayed in bed for a while. I'm trying to get up, but it's still a struggle. The wound hurts me a bit. I need to be careful with my movements. I can't lay in bed all day. It's getting boring. I stood up for ten minutes. That was the maximum I could do it. This is getting boring. I can use my phone, but I have no idea where it is. Also, I believe it's broken. I will buy myself a new one. For Lizzy as well. The doctor came again to check on me. - You won't let me go home, will you? - No. I'm sure you still have some pain. - A little bit. - This is why you will stay here. I need to keep checking on you to make sure the wound will be gone. - How long it will take? I want to go home. - I don't know. I want to ask you something. - Sure. - We found pads on your wound. I know you are a man. Can you explain? - he asked, chuckling - That was my daughter, Lizzy. She is a girl and has these things in hand. - I have to say it was clever. It didn't stop the blood completely, but it was helping. - She is still a kid. Sadly, she is not listening to anyone. - Kids have to look like someone. - She chose the wrong parent. - That is not a choice. - I can't let her get in trouble. - I have two girls. The one thing I learned is that you can't be with them all the time. They have friends and a reputation. Mine get embarrassed if they are seen with me. - Why? Lizzy has no problem with that. - I don't have much time for them, but I'm trying my best. Maybe they don't want it. - I wasn't with her for years. I'm trying to make it up to her. - Then do it. She would love it. - I hope so. The doctor said I was recovering, but I needed more time. The whole afternoon I spent in bed. I have nothing else to do here. At least I took a nap. It helped a bit. For dinner, I received chicken with rice. It was good. Not every hospital can serve delicious food. This one is good. I ate all of it. I was about to get up when I saw Nia. She is mad at me. I can see it in her eyes. - Hey. - Hey. - I'm sure you didn't come to see me. - No. - Then? - I want to know what happened. - Now? - Yes, now. Tell me. - She was there at the wrong time. - So, it's her fault. What about you? - I know you want the truth, but can't you wait? - No. What the heck is going on? - Ok, ok. I will tell you. - What? - I'm not a drug dealer. - Yes, you are. Why else would you have been there? - I'm a police officer undercover as a drug dealer. - Yeah, right. I don't believe you. - You can go and ask the police if you want. - When you left. - Yes, I was already working for them. - This is what you never told me. - Yes, I'm sorry. I couldn't tell you. - Why not? What would've happened? - I couldn't risk your life as well. - Why did you start this? - I wanted to stop this. You could've been one of the users. I couldn't let this happen to you. - Users? I will never use drugs. - You won't, but someone might put them in your drink. Many people die from this. - You wanted to help me? - Yes. Nia, I will never hurt you. - Do you keep doing it for me? - No. You already have everything needed to keep you safe. - Really? - Why do you think I keep hanging out with Noah? I keep reminding him that he should keep you safe. - What about you? Won't you do it? - Now, I do it for Lizzy. Look, I'm sorry for what happened. - I know, but she could've died. - My boss will ask her some questions at the station when I'm home. Would you like to come? - Yes, I do. - I will call you when the day comes. - Thanks. I hope you will get better. Nia stayed with me for some time. I didn't think she would believe me, but she did. I think she regrets the way she treated me. I'm not mad at her. After all, I made her believe the lies I created. It was for her good. That way was better. At least, I thought it was. Look at what happened with Lizzy. She is not like her mom. This girl will fight until the end. I appreciate what she did for me, but she shouldn't have been there. It was too dangerous. I'm glad that she and Adam are ok. My boss knows something about her that I don't. I hope that this won't get her in trouble.
