Heather's pov The tension in the room was palpable, like a thick fog that clung to every surface. "What is this?" Liam's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing through me like a dagger. "Marriage dissolution," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. Cassandra's smirk caught my attention, and I felt a surge of anger. "I don't want a single penny from you, Liam. I just want my freedom," I continued, my voice firm. Liam snorted, his expression twisted in disgust. "You're a gold digger, Michelle. This is just another tactic, isn't it?" Cassandra jumped to his defense, her voice shrill. "We all know you forced and tricked Liam into marrying you!" I felt a sting from her words, but I stood my ground. "I regret my mistakes, Cassandra. You both used me for your selfish desires. I thought you were going to give me a chance, but I was wrong." Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, and I laughed bitterly to conceal my pain. The court papers felt like a weight in my hand, a constant reminder of my failure. "I want to give you your freedom, Liam, as well as myself. The court needs to get these papers in an hour." I finished, my voice cracking. Liam's eyes locked onto mine, his gaze burning with intensity. Cassandra's voice broke the silence. "Liam, you have your freedom now. Why are you not happy?" He took a pen from his bag and signed the papers with a flourish, his signature bold and confident. A tear dropped from my eye as I turned to leave, the sound of my heels echoing through the room. "You're a smart businessman, Liam, but it seems you're not smart enough," I said, my voice barely audible. On my way to the courthouse, my failure hit me so hard in the face that I cried hard. The first day I saw Liam was when he was in an accident. The accident was so bad that the car was going to blow up soon because of the petrol leaking from the car. I managed to take him out safely but I got hurt in the process and I ended up in the hospital. When he woke up his father made sure we got married, and being a young girl who just fell in love, I agreed and got married to him that very week. He never looked at me as a wife and I never bothered because I had my plans. Cassandra showed some footage of her being the one rescuing him and brought test results of her being in the hospital for a long period because of the accident and everything I planned went down the hill. Liam's father still loved me but since he traveled, Liam made sure I had no contact with his father. He made my marriage very uncomfortable for me and Cassandra didn't make it any better. They were best friends but Cassandra had been in love with him. “Are you alright ma'am?” The cab man asked. I came out of my thoughts and wiped my eyes, giving him a weak smile. The courthouse felt like a blur as I submitted the papers and received my divorce certificate. A battle raged inside me – the desire to fight once more clashed with accepting my defeat. I took my phone and called the person I trusted and betrayed. I called Jason, the only person I trusted. “Jason” I sobbed on the call. “What happened to you cousin?” I cried harder and he waited for me before he asked me anything. “Did he do anything to you?” “I am divorced” My tears couldn't stop. “Where are you?” He asked after a few seconds of silence “Court house” I replied. “Wait for me, I will be there in 5 minutes” I ended the call and clenched the divorce certificate tight. When Jason arrived , he enveloped me in a warm hug, allowing me to cry to my heart's content. "Let's get out of here before the media arrives," he said, helping me into the car. As we drove away, I saw a car like Liam's pull over in front of the courthouse, but Jason sped off before I could confirm. My heart felt void of any feeling, and I just wanted to curl up and sleep. Jason's house became my refuge, a place where I could escape the pain and heartache. He helped me prepare a bath, and I soaked myself in the warm water, memories flooding my mind like a tidal wave. I washed up when I heard Jason calling me out. I changed and went out of the room. When I emerged, Jason had prepared food for me, and we sat down to eat. "Tell me, what went wrong?" he asked, his eyes filled with concern. "He asked for a divorce because I didn't give his best friend blood," I explained, my voice barely above a whisper. Jason listened attentively, his expression understanding. “You were ready to fight for him, you left the family you had for him, and you even stopped talking to me” he said. “I know, that is why I want to ask for your forgiveness, you won't forgive me easily and neither will he nor will he answer my request but I am willing to try” When I meant he, Jason already understood. "I want to leave New York," I said, my eyes locked onto him. "Why?" he asked, his brow furrowed with worry. "I want to forget about him, and this is my only escape," I replied, half-truthfully. Jason nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. Only my grandfather could grant me the freedom I sought, but I knew it wouldn't be easy. I left Jason's house, determined to start anew, but the past lingered, a constant reminder of my mistakes. When I returned to the house to collect my belongings, Liam's voice stopped me in my tracks. "I know you'll come back, Michelle. You don't have the mind to leave; you can't even survive a week out there." I turned to face him, my eyes locked onto his. "I don't know where you put my favorite suit, but I need to wear it for an invite," he said, his eyes fixed on the news. "I'm here to take my things," I replied, my voice firm. Liam's eyes met mine, and I felt a surge of anger. I went inside to pack my clothes. When I got back to the sitting room he was already by the door. “You jumped on the next guy you could find immediately after our divorce, you are so desperate” I took a deep breath. “At least I was faithful while I was married to you” “I never cheated on you” “Really? You cheated on me emotional” He was quiet for some while and asked “where are you going?” "When did you start caring?" I asked, my voice laced with sarcasm. Liam's expression faltered, and I walked past him, leaving the house and my life of three years behind.
