Lizzie let Luke drag her to the side of the house without a word.
“I’ll talk to you in school tomorrow,” he told her as he pushed her around the corner.
“Luke?” Lizzie heard a voice call out. “Luke! Are you out there?”
“Go!” Luke hissed, pushing Lizzie further away.
Turning back toward the backyard, he called out, “I’m here, Mom.”
“What are you doing out there at this time of the night, boy?” the woman called out angrily. “Are you alone out there? I thought I heard voices.”
He glanced back at Lizzie and said, “I’m alone. I was just taking out the trash. You might have heard the Hendersons next door. I thought I heard them talking, too.”
Lizzie stayed with her back pressed to the house as he disappeared around the corner. She heard him walk up the steps and go inside.
