Ragnar tore the door off the luxury SUV, ready to drag Lucien’s fiancée out and end her life.
The moment he grabbed her arm, everything changed.
A powerful force hit him. The mate bond formed instantly.
His wolf roared inside his mind.
Mate.
“No,” Ragnar thought. “Not her.”
Her scent filled his senses, and every instinct told him to protect her.
But she belonged to Lucien’s pack.
She was the granddaughter of the man who had destroyed his family.
“She’s the enemy,” Ragnar told his wolf.
Ours, his wolf answered.
Anger filled him.
He couldn’t kill her anymore. The bond wouldn’t allow it.
But he couldn’t leave her either. If Lucien found her, he would claim her.
The thought made Ragnar furious.
“Damn it,” he muttered.
He looked at her with mixed emotions. He hated what she represented, yet every instinct pushed him to keep her safe.
He had to get her out of there before he lost control.
Aloha didn’t understand what had happened.
The man had suddenly stopped attacking her. His eyes had changed, and he seemed distracted.
He stood silently, gripping the broken door.
Now, Nanny Maeve’s voice echoed in her mind.
Her hand found the dagger hidden beneath her dress.
She had never fought anyone before.
But Greg was dead.
If she didn’t act, she would be next.
She pulled out the dagger and lunged at him.
“Die!” she shouted.
The Reaper reacted instantly.
He caught the blade with his bare hand before it reached him.
Blood ran down his fingers, but he didn’t let go.
He looked at his injured hand, then back at Aloha.
Instead of anger, there was a faint smile.
“You’ve got spirit,” he said. “You’ll need it.”
He took the dagger from her and threw it into the forest.
“Please… I’m sorry,” Aloha whispered as she backed away.
“We’re done playing, Princess.”
He reached for her again.
This time, she couldn’t escape.
He placed a hand on the back of her neck.
“Sleep.”
Everything went black.
She collapsed, and he caught her before she hit the ground.
The last thing she remembered was the scent of rain before she lost consciousness.

Aloha slowly opened her eyes.
Her head ached, and the sound of an engine filled her ears.
She looked around.
She wasn’t in her bedroom or Lucien’s SUV.
She was lying in the backseat of an old pickup truck.
Her wrists were tied with rope, and several wooden crates surrounded her.
“She’s awake.”
The voice came from the front.
Aloha looked up.
A thin man with a shaved head was driving. Beside him sat Ragnar.
He wore a leather jacket over his shoulders, and his injured hand was wrapped in a bandage.
He didn’t look at her.
Instead, he kept his eyes on the road.
“Why is she still alive?” the driver asked. “We should’ve killed her back there. Lucien would’ve understood the message.”
“Just drive, Darius,” Ragnar replied.
“I’m serious,” Darius said. “Bringing her with us is a mistake. Lucien will come after us.”
“Let him.”
Darius shook his head.
“We’re risking everyone for one girl. What are we even going to do with her?”
Aloha stayed quiet as they talked about her as if she wasn’t there.
“She’s a hostage,” Ragnar said.
Darius laughed.
“Hostage? Lucien doesn’t bargain. He’ll replace her and come after us anyway.”
“Enough.”
Ragnar finally looked at him.
“She’s under my protection. No one touches her.”
Darius frowned.
“Since when do we protect Nightfang wolves?”
“Watch your mouth.”
Ragnar’s voice was enough to end the argument.
“She’s a prisoner,” he said. “Treat her like one.”
Darius said nothing else and focused on driving.
The truck fell silent.
Aloha looked at Ragnar, confused.
He had every chance to kill her.Instead, he had saved her.
She remembered the strange feeling when he touched her and the word that had echoed in her mind.
Mate.
It couldn’t be true.
She hadn’t even awakened her wolf.
After a long silence, she spoke.
“Where are you taking me?”
Ragnar turned to face her.
His eyes briefly dropped to the ropes around her wrists before meeting hers.
“Somewhere Lucien can’t reach you,” he said.
His voice was cold and emotionless.
Whatever had happened between them during the attack, he wasn’t about to talk about it.
