-LILIAN-
I chuckled at his words, my hands moving slowly to caress my stomach. Had he sensed the pheromones in my womb, or was he just trying to see my reaction?
If he had an heir, then there would be no use for me. It was a natural rule I had picked up from his habit of tossing out anything that wasn’t useful for him without thinking twice.
“Mrs. Brittany told you right.” I giggled.
Mrs. Brittany is the family doctor, and she was under his direct command. There was no way she would have let me do the honors; after all, she had a duty to always report my condition to him on weekends.
“Mrs. Brittany?” He slammed his hands onto the table. “Did Mrs. Brittany tell you about the heir ?”
A wave of confusion swept through me as his words resonated in my ears. If she didn’t tell him anything about his heir and she didn’t tell me anything about the supposed heir, then what exactly are we talking about?
Knock, knock, knock… The door reverberated with the external forces placed on it. I adjusted, wanting to stand up, but his cold gaze redirected me, and I sat back, waiting for him to make a move.
He snapped his finger, and a maid sprinted towards the door.
“I hope you have food for two more.” He let out a smirk, his eyes glimmering with mischief beyond the usual.
“Charlotte?” I stammered as a young lady walked into the dining room. She was still the same: straight, blonde, and sexy with those curves that were close to mine in size and shape. My best friend, who had informed me of her leave to the reef to support her father’s trade in a foreign pack.
“Lilian…” she stammered, her hand moving back to her hair.
I lowered my gaze, my eyes picking up the child in her hands. A boy with curly hair, a pointed nose, and a diamond-shaped head just like Alpha Drex.
I shifted my gaze back to Drex and there it was, the striking resemblance I was scared of. My heart sank, my hands trembling as tears gathered in my eyes.
“Papa!” The little boy called out as he ran towards Drex.
Drex’s face lit up in a smile as he pulled the boy into his hands and cuddled him. “Did you miss Papa?” He questioned, and the little boy let out that icy smile that gave me comfort.
The resemblance and characters all matched. Drex had an heir that was about two years old, and here I was thinking I would be the one to give him the family he deserves.
A pang of disbelief ran through me the more I watched them have a father-and-child session. It was cute, but it tore me apart knowing the child didn’t belong to me.
“Charlotte…” I gazed at her. I could see the smile on her face—the smile of a mother watching both her husband and son as they played to their hearts’ content.
She replied with silence. Silence meant guilt between us, and she admitted it openly despite knowing how much I loved Drex.
My hand ran down to my belly one more time only this time I was trying my best to hold back the tears in my eyes. I brought out the test report from my pocket, staring at it as I placed it on the table before him.
“I thought you were my best friend.” I gazed at Charlotte who couldn’t take her eyes off Drex.
“We were never meant to be friends. You just happened to be all over the place and I needed you tied to a corner and that title so happened to do the job.” She replied with a cold glare.
Drex grabbed the test report. He lowered the child from his lap, the words “Go play with Mommy” following.
I felt like a fool as tears flowed down my cheeks. I had been blinded for years while they played their cards. How stupid had I been?
With a smile, I rose from my chair. I walked up to Charlotte, who now had her hands on the little boy, covering his eyes like I was a monster who had been threatening them for years.
I raised my hand, slapping her hard on the face. “He will never be yours no matter what you do to hold him down.” She held her face, her eyes rolling hard as she stared at me with disgust.
“How dare you!” Drex growled, but I cared less about him now. I strolled out of the dining room, heading straight for the exit. The maids all stared at me; they had been eavesdropping on the conversation, and they itched for a result so badly.
The sound of an angry growl followed, and my danger senses tingled. I ran out of the mansion, taking to my heels. The growl grew louder, and howls followed.
I stole a glance at the four shifted wolves behind the red wolf, who I recognized as Drex. Their fangs were out, their claws clutching hard on the ground as they chased after me. Further back stood Charlotte, holding onto her son, a smile lingering on her face.
They were catching up fast, my pace increasing within seconds. Not wanting to be caught, I shifted into my wolf form, increasing my speed twice as much.
My sight kept becoming dim as we ran deeper into the forest. I had never felt this way, the coursing feeling of exhaustion that had slowly taken over me as I ran into the heart of the forest.
I tried not to think of the reason he was chasing me, but I also couldn’t ignore it. Did he want an apology for Charlotte, a confirmation of the test report… did he want me dead?
“Increase your speed; you are all trained men.” Drex growled in the distance. “Anything you do, don’t let her live.”
