Chapter 3

-LILIAN- I felt dizzy, my sight becoming blurry all of a sudden. I tried to hold back the nauseating sensation that had begun building up within me, but nothing helped. My pace began to slow down, and they began to catch up to me. All I could do was keep my breathing steady by changing up the rasped breaths that had begun to emanate. Falling meant trouble, and I wasn't ready for that. …"Did you really think you could outrun me?" His deep voice crawled into my ears. Gradually my eyes opened to the scenery. The four wolves had gathered around me, with Drex standing before me still in his wolf form. He sneered, his claws emerging. I tried to move, but I was already petrified. He placed a claw on my shoulder, piercing my skin and halting when he felt the tip of his claw in my skin. "You should have never gotten pregnant for me." His words made tears gather in my eyes. I have thought about it several times, but it was never a mistake. I loved him with all my heart, but this was my reward—a reward I never expected. "You think you can hold me down with this child in your womb?" He held up a smirk, raising his claw above my face in such a way that he blocked the moon. "Charlotte will be the only woman I love and will ever love. You were only just a liability I bought to ensure the pack stayed in position till I found a perfect Luna." Tears ran down my face as his claws struck my belly and his men followed suit, supporting his hits with kicks and punches that could wipe out a man's existence with one hit. "Drex..." I pleaded. I could hear the sound of my thumping heart. It had been racing faster and faster, making beats similar to a rolling drum, but it had calmed, beating at two strokes per second. I could hear it growing weaker as the sound became faint. "Drex, please, let me go." He didn't listen; he kept hitting and clawing my belly like he was going to feast on me. The pain grew excruciating, and my head began to hurt; the pressure on my brain forced my system to slowly shut down. "Why… why, Drex?" I said in a low, soft voice. …….The songs of the birds chirped their way into my ears. My eyes were heavy as they slowly opened up. The sight of a plain white ceiling made me shrink, my fingers trembling the next instant. Where am I? "She's awake, honey." A lady walked in with a weird-looking object hanging on her neck. She walked towards me, placing her hand on my shoulder. I lost control of my body, feeling more relaxed than I had ever been in years. She placed the handle of the object in her ear and the round tail on my chest, acting like she was listening to something. "Your heartbeat is alright now." She let out a smile as she placed the object back on her neck. A short man walked in. I would have called him her child if she hadn't called him honey in the beginning. He walked up to me with a small hammer, staring at me like I was his next lab rat. "..." I couldn't speak, my throat hurting with each trial I tried to force. He grabbed a stool, placing it on the bed next to me. He climbed onto it so he could see me fully while tapping the hammer on his hands. "It wouldn't hurt, I promise." He let out. I believed him, staying still as he brought the hammer closer to my knee and raised it up. Suddenly, memories of Drex tearing me up played in my mind. The hammer tapped my knee slightly, but my body bucked on its own, and my legs hit the short man, sending him flying. I tried apologizing, but no words came out. "Your strength has returned." He chuckled as the lady helped him up. I had a lot of things to say, but I couldn't communicate. My foster parents had taught me sign language in the past so I could help get them a few tips as a beggar. I hated them for it, but it seemed it would be useful. I moved my hands slowly, sure that their eyes were focused on my hands. "Is this heaven?" I indicated. They burst into laughter for a bit before returning to take a look at my curious face. "Nope, this is Livia, home of Rogues." "How did I get here?" I indicated with my hands. "I and my husband here were hunting for antelopes, and fortunately for us, we shot one. We hurried into the bushes to get it, but on getting to the location, we couldn't find the antelope, just a hurt lady with several fractured and dislocated bones, an indefinite amount of scars, and a bleeding belly." She explained. I lowered my head, the thoughts of a smiling Drex filling my head. Who could have believed that he wanted to dispatch me so badly? If only I knew … "How many days has it been since then?" I questioned. "It's been six months. Your recovery was a hassle, but I'm glad you fought the battle and survived." My gaze travelled to my bandaged belly, my hands clutching tight as I raised my head back up to ask my final question. Their smiles had vanished, and a sympathetic look had appeared on their faces. Their silence said it all, but I couldn't believe those looks; it could be a prank, a skit pulled to make me relieved after the tension. "The thing is…" she stammered. "We tried to save the both of you, but your placenta had been cut quite badly, and the foetus in your womb had been grievously scarred. We had to incubate it, but it couldn't survive since it was just developing."
