Chapter 4

-LILIAN- I sat on the bed staring at the food Helene, the lady who had saved me had brought before me. Her husband Mark had tried to console me along with her but nothing seemed to reduce the pain. My expectations were crushed the moment I heard those words. Being a single mother was just enough to keep me living but now that was also beyond my reach. I was lonely once again in this small world with no one to save me. Helene and Mark were Rogues so they changed location every week to keep their location hidden. They are literally run away lovers whose packs didn’t approve of their mate bond and they found a way to make it work despite the little odds given to them by the world. “I love you…” Marks deep voice crawled in. This made me think of the life I would have had with Drex. The soothing words that he would have comforted me with during tough times and when our child gave me an headache, the way he would cuddle me and tell me it’s part of the process. I really had been hoping for so much… Staying with Mark and Helene wouldn’t help me much as they’d only remind me of Drex and our painful relationship. We had visited my child’s grave a day before and the pain still lingered deep in my heart. It hurt real bad, the scenerio placed on repeat with the silence that lingered. Knowing Helene for a couple of days she wasn’t going to let me out for any reason. She’d cage me in till she found out I was properly healed. I didn’t believe in living anymore, it was pointless. I held onto the sliding window, my fingers trembling with pain as my hands touched the aluminum panel. I slid it open to a length that was comfortable enough for me to get past. With a heave, I jumped out the window, landing into the bushes right outside. The ground was truncated, making me roll down into the forest. The broken twigs kept poking my injury, the pain making me wince. ……Rasp breaths emanated as I stared at the starry sky. The night owls held onto their “hoots” their gaze laid on me as I groaned in agony. I glared at the draped up bandages, my palms filled with tiny little branches that had sharp mouths enough to poke me. I winced as I pulled out the branches, the scars successfully engraved on them. Compared to other wolves my regenerative system was weak and that was caused by my inability to connect with my wolf. I have never heard her speak even for once, it was like we were never meant to be from the very beginning. Sometimes I wonder if I’d be alone in this world if my wolf was with me. My legs moved and I stood tall despite the aching bruises and open wounds that I had retrieved from the fall. It felt stupid to rely on anyone else, they’d all see me as a burden someday and I’d be left alone once again. “A tour all over the realm to find my true purpose for living.” It sounded nice but I didn’t think it was possible. There was nothing good about people, about the realm itself. They all end up the same, bewildered, betrayed and in dismay. Was it all worth living for? The rustling sound of leaves resonated in the silent night. I knew not where I was going, not where I was going to drop dead after I lost a lot of blood. I just wanted to grief over my child and review the beautiful memories that all ended in pain. A week passed and I was still in the forest. The bandages has began to lose their effect holding onto my body through the dried up liquid that had clung onto it. My legs and hands were numb, my body petrified by the starvation and thrust that had began to clung to me. The sight of a running waterfall caught my eyes and my body began to move on its own. I thought I wanted to die, thought I’d neglect my body of food and water just to die of starvation, why was I fighting my will? Why was there a need for survival? “Who’s there!” I crashed into the bushes as the deep voice echoed in the forest. It was the usual twin guard pair, the fiercest warriors were always asked to guard the gates of a pack. The first guard had already begun heading my way while the second protected the waterfall. I searched around for something that could make a sound, and I gained when I caught sight of a round rock. Round rocks were usually produced from the magma from volcanoes and a good amount of weathering. Due to their round nature, they had the ability to produce the loudest sound and a great deal of resistance to air currents. I grabbed the rock, tying it up with some amount of draped bandages. The bandages were to carry my scent, as they often had quite a good nose that could smell everything within a thirty-meter radius. With a grunt, I threw the stone towards the farthest mountain. I didn’t have enough strength to push it to the mountain, but it was enough to buy time. The frequency was luckily high, which caught the other guards’ attention. They both left their post, running towards the direction of the rock. Iulated myself on my victory as I ran towards the waterfall. Upon reaching the waterfall, I bent down, clasping my hand to get a bit of water to drink. It tastes so refreshing, my hands moving on their own to get another scoop. Suddenly, the smell of tobacco filled the air around me. I felt nauseous, staring into the water and using it as a mirror to check if anyone was next to me. The guards shouldn’t be back anytime soon, which means I might have miscalculated their number. I stared at the reflection of a man dressed mysteriously in a black robe. “Who are you?”
