CHAPTER 4

1160 Words
To say I had been frightened when I woke up in an unfamiliar room and the Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack kicked open the door and targeted me with a predatory look was an understatement. His lips against mine didn’t feel as disgusting as I had predicted. He was warm and soft. So soft that it reminded me of Kevin whenever he would roughly invade my lips. I wasn’t even aware that the memory was so painful to remember till it made me tear up. Alpha Lennox had a guilty expression on his face as he backed away from me and stood up from the bed. “I’m sorry,” he said. I was frozen on the spot after those words. When I regained my senses, I glanced both ways to check if there was anyone else in the room that he could be apologizing to in my place. There wasn’t. “I…” I didn’t know what to say. And my lack of words seemed to have triggered him somehow as a complex expression settled on his features. “I shouldn’t have come here.” “I’m sorry.” We both spoke at the same time. Alpha Lennox’s brows furrowed at my sudden apology. “What are you sorry for? I should be the one to apologize for scaring you and kissing you without your permission,” he said. Did people normally ask for permission before kissing someone? And why shouldn’t I be sorry? I must have upset him in some way. I was scared that he would hit me for upsetting him. He was my new mate—even though I couldn’t understand why. His words and actions toward me should be considered supreme and just. I learned that from Kevin the hard way. “I upset you. I’m sorry for that.” I turned away from him and looked down at my hands. Alpha Lennox was silent for a few moments before he said, “You don’t have to apologize to me. You haven’t upset me in any way. I’m the one who- I’m sorry.” After saying all of those things, he turned his back to me and walked out of the room. I stared at his retreating figure with a confused expression. What was that all about? *** HAYDEN Kissing her stopped my rampage. As I left the room, I mind linked Chris and Annette and told them to return to the pack house that it was safe now. I still couldn’t believe that she stopped my rampage. ‘It’s because she’s our mate,’ Jax reasoned. I ignored him and waited for Chris and Annette. When they arrived at my office, they were surprised to see that I was back to my senses and my rampage didn’t last for hours like it usually did. “Hayden, are you sure you’re okay?” Annette asked me cautiously. I nodded. “I feel fine. Slightly weak, but more stronger than I would feel after going on a rampage.” I explained. The two were shocked. “Did something happen? How come your rampage came to an end so suddenly?” Chris asked. “It’s because of my mate. I don’t know how, but after kissing her, my mind became as clear as it could be.” Annette had a suspicious look on her face as she said, “Could it be that Alpha Claude’s niece has a healing ability that the Red Moon Pack have been keeping a secret?” I shook my head negatively. “I don’t know about that, but my rampage has never been so brief before.” Chris made a thinking face before he spoke up. “I think we should investigate. This is the first time that anyone has been able to put a stop to your curse. Do you think she broke it completely?” I checked my left wrist to see if the X mark that appeared when I was eighteen and signified the beginning of my curse was still there. Unfortunately, it was. “It’s still here. What if this was just a fluke?” I started to think. It could be a one-time thing. There was no guarantee that just because she helped stop it today that she would be able to do the same another day. “No, we can’t think like that,” Annette said. “This is too coincidental to discard. We can summarize that she was able to stop your rampage because she’s your mate or she has hidden healing abilities.” I decided to go along with Annette’s theory for now. “Then let’s investigate her. Find out if she truly does a healing ability. If she does, her stay here in the Crescent Moon Pack will be permanent.” I instructed the two of them. ‘What do you mean by that? Was her stay here not going to be permanent before? Isn’t she our mate?’ Jax questioned from inside my head. ‘I haven’t accepted her as my mate yet. I hope you know that, right?’ I responded inside my head. Jax went wild after that. ‘What do you mean you haven’t accepted her yet!? She’s our mate, you bastard! How dare you!?’ I ignored him and continued to discuss with Annette and Chris. We decided not to question my mate now or tell her anything about my curse until we were sure of her background and could trust her. In the meantime, I would talk to her and get her to share a few things with me as well as help her settle down in the Crescent Moon Pack. It’d be easy to do this since her life was in my hands anyway. She offered it to me in exchange to get her out of that cell. I made my way back to my room to talk to her. I didn’t expect to see Owen standing over her on the bed when I got there, helping her wipe her hands aggressively. With a confused expression, I asked, “What is going on here?” Owen jumped apart from my mate as quickly as possible with a guilty look on his face, saying, “Nothing! Absolutely nothing!” He gave my mate a pointed look, signifying that she should agree with him. With a complex look in her eyes, she said, “Nothing,” as well. “You two are acting awfully suspicious about nothing,” I took slow steps towards them. “Impossible! I would never! It was nothing. And I’m leaving now.” He rushed out of my room after that rant. What an i***t. Left alone with my mate like I wanted to be, I went over to sit next to her on the bed. That was when I realized that Owen had been wiping off blood stains on her hands. A sudden wave of fury surged inside me. “Who did this to you!?”
