Episode one
As the blood spilled out of his mouth and dripped continuously onto my shirt due to the glass piercing into his lungs through his back, The words he had told me earlier resounded in my brain.
“Power is something everyone craves, but they all seem to overlook a simple truth,” Grandpa said, his voice struggled above a whisper. “Knowledge is power, Clair. I hope you understand that?”
I looked at him and smiled. Grand pa’s grey hair was balding in the middle of his head but that didn't stop him from thinking deeply and speaking wise words out of nowhere.
“Certainly Grandpa.” I rolled my eyes, “you must agree with me that sentence has been thrown around, right?”
“My lovely girl, That's the issue. People undermine it's value just because the phrase is popular and that is exactly what makes them miss out.”
As his lips paled due to the blood which he was loosing. He fixed his gaze upon me, distinction bold in his gaze. And as the car caning crashing down the cliff, I felt his grip around my body tighten while I shut my eyes closed and held back a loud scream. I was terribly shaking and couldn't contain my scream any longer as we were trashed around by the vehicle in the middle of nowhere.
The speed of the car became faster as it scratched against the side of the cliff before tossing us down to the ground.
The car strumbles violently, tossing us vigorously from side to side. I could barely keep my eyes open as it bolted into a tree. Grandpa’s grip was the only firm anchor amidst the chaos, tightly holding me even as the planet spun wildly around us.
For a moment, everything went black and the only thing that surrounded my sense was the intruding stench of blood.

When I woke, the weight on top of me was suffocating. It was Grandpa’s lifeless body. It was sprawled over mine with his blood soaking through my shirt. Every breath I took was a struggle against the grim reality of his death.
“Grandpa,” I muttered, understanding that he was dead. His hands were cold against my body, making me lightly shiver.
Grandpa’s once brilliant eyes, brimming with insight and warmth, now stared vacantly. The light had shrinked out, leaving alone an emptiness that chilled me to the bone.”
In the driver's seat, I could see the driver’s neck dancing out the window. I got frightened by the sight of it and it made me look down at my body to determine if any part of me was detached or broken but there was none. Apart from my leg and arms being sore, I was well. All thanks to Grandpa for protecting me.
My survival instincts hit me and I carefully loosened my grandpa’s grip on me and somehow crawled out of the car through the broken glass window.
My lungs hastily inhaled fresh air and my body ached for relaxation. But my mind was desperate, even as I laid on the green grass and stared at the sky, My thoughts reminded me of the point that got us here.
Just hours before this whole nightmare, I had been snuggled on my warm couch, enthralled in a captivating TV show. Grandpa had spurt in, his eyes glinting with a new found excitement, and then, he urged me to join him for a ‘quick morning ride.’ Little did I know, it was a ride that would change everything.
I'd put on a plain tee shirt and a pair of black pants, and joined him for his affairs only to find out that grand pa tricked me to go with him to a conference hall which was stacked with hundreds of people including media personnel. I didn't take it seriously because my grand father always took me almost everywhere with him.
But then he made an unexpected announcement that shook the business world and threw me off balance. He announced I, Clair Russel as the heir to everything he owned publicly.
When we left the conference room, I had asked him why he did that because I knew my stepfather his son-in-law had been muttering about gaining his inheritance for a long time, but to my utmost dismay, I was chosen instead.
My question fell on deaf ears, Grandfather kept me silent. He had given me a file and asked me to study it carefully at the right time.
I guess the right time is now. Who would have thought it would be in just a few hours?
My fingers trembled as I reached into the wreckage, so desperate to find the file Grandpa had given me earlier. The paper appeared crumpled and smudged, but I clawed through it, my heart racing with uncertainty and fear.
However, things only got worse the more I flipped through the pages which made me drop onto the ground in shock.
The file revealed a chilling truth which sent cool shivers down my spine. My stepfather had married my mother solely for her wealth. But, When she refused to relinquish it, he went as far as poisoning her, a menacing plot that led to her untimely death. I should have known.
It was at the time I was reckless at nineteen and gone to a night club. My stepdad hired someone to mix stuff into my drink, I can't recall being taken advantage of, or and harmed.
On the last page of the file, was the profile of a young man who seemed quite wealthy. The photo was taken in a black and white theme so I couldn't see the features clearly.
His name was William Barson and he was 31 years old, His zodiac sign was Pisces and most importantly, he was the owner and co-owner of many successful pharmaceutical companies in the world. I didn't know why his profile was in the file but it was unimportant right now.
The truth about the man I regarded as my father was much more astonishing, and I didn't have any doubt that he might be responsible for the accident that happened.
I could still remember vividly the faint cry of the driver as he complained about not being able to control the breaks.
The car’s brakes had failed at the precise moment I was declared the heir to my grandfather’s fortune. The coincidence was too glaring to ignore. I felt sudden anger and fear churn inside me. It was obvious that someone had wanted this to happen.
From the disheveled car, I was able to reach my grandfather’s phone even though the screen was badly damaged. I called my grandfathers most trusted aide, Marcel, and told him what happened and he promised to come to my rescue by tracing the location of the phone.
I sat there on the cold grass, feeling myself soaked with the feelings of inadequacy as I realized that I survived amongst two men.
