CHAPTER 7 I blinked several times, trying to adjust my eyes to the light. Slowly, I opened my pestered eyes. First, a white ceiling came into view. Then I looked around and realized I was in a small bedroom — every piece of furniture gleamed white. I raised myself into a sitting position, my body heavy and weak. I had no idea how long I’d been out cold. Memories flashed violently through my mind — the k********g, my family’s suffering. I’d seen my father’s and granny’s lifeless bodies collapse to the floor. I didn’t know where Mom and Theo were. What if they were all dead? The thought stabbed through my heart. If only I had done what that monster wanted... maybe they’d still be alive.
