32 The ensuing silence was broken by the sound of shuffling, and Richard stepped forward. Introducing himself to the inspector, he explained that he was Adam’s father. The inspector thanked him and told him they needed to talk about his son, who was apparently missing. ‘Perhaps you could step outside and talk to me?’ she suggested. ‘There seems to be a party going on here, which I’d hate to interrupt.’ She glanced around, unsmiling. No one dared point out that it was too late for her to worry about disturbing our celebrations. ‘I’m sorry, I don’t know where Adam’s staying at the moment, if that’s what you want to know,’ Richard replied, making no move to leave the café. ‘He tends to move around, with his work.
