Chapter One
“Brenda!!!!!” Alexa screamed from the garden with excitement evident in her voice calling out to her older sister.
“BRENDA!!!!!!!” Alexa repeated in a higher tone now placing both hands on her waist, with her right foot tapping against the soft grass that covered the whole garden, with her eyes glued to the door she had expected her sister to emerge from, a bit annoyed when she didn’t respond.
“What????” Brenda screamed back her response peeping down at her sister through the large silver coated window of her room on the second floor of their large mansion, with a large bowl of oats in her hands still dressed in her night wear, and looked psychotic because of her messy hair.
Alexa shifted her gaze to the direction of her sister and frowned as she wanted her to come out to the garden with her but almost immediately, her frown was replaced by a smile as she pointed high out into the sky. “Look, a rainbow” Alexa informed her sister giggling like a five year old in her pajamas and braided pigtails.
“How cute, let me know when a unicorn flies by okay?” Brenda replied dryly briefly glancing high up into the clear skies that held a large rainbow before stuffing a spoon full of oats in her mouth and closed her window.
Alexa cursed in her breath and clenched her teeth together as she glared at the window her sister just “slammed on her face”.
“You shouldn’t be out here right now child, your parents are on the way, go in and get dressed” Mrs. Cruz called out from behind Alexa distracting her attention from her sisters window.
Alexa’s hazel eyes brightened up once more in excitement. Their parents have been away for over a month, on some business trip leaving the two girls alone with Mrs. Cruz, their head housekeeper in her late fifties who had been with them since childhood, and also a handful of maids.
With increased eagerness, Alexa once again turned towards her sister’s window.
“Brenda, Brenda, Brie, Brie, Brenda…………………..” Alexa continued until the window opened again and revealed her sister’s annoyed face still holding her bowl of oats.
“WHAT?” Brenda asked looking round as if actually expecting to see a unicorn.
”Mom and Dad are on their way home!” Alexa announced with a wide grin
She could see Brenda’s eyes lit up as she abandoned her bowl of oats and jumped about in her room with Alexa doing the same thing and Mrs. Cruz giggled at their childish reactions.
Alexa abandoned her pot of pink roses she was picking earlier in the garden and dashed into the house, she met Brenda running down the stairs towards her direction and both girls embraced themselves as Mrs. Cruz came into the house and smiled softly at both girls and headed towards the kitchen.
“Let’s go shower” Brenda suggested while dusting off bits of flower petals from Alexa’s hair and pulled her upstairs with her, and they both went into Alexa’s room.
Alexa was busy getting out of her clothes, while Brenda was busy fixing her a warm bath and in no time she appeared back in the room from the bathroom and met Alexa now clad in her Pink above the knee towel.
“I’ll be in my room” Brenda said as she approached Alexa and ruffled her hair in a playful manner which earned her a scowl from Alexa
“Be quick about it okay? So we can help make breakfast” Brenda added as she headed out and entered her own room next door. She smiled to herself as she entered her room and looked round, everything seemed to be in place in her stylish room that wore deep colors and large furnitures that definitely befit a 22 year old girl.
Her dark hazel eyes glanced round the room once more with a proud smirk on her face which was replaced by a frown when her eyes fell on her half eaten bowl of oats she had left by her window.
She walked over to her window, and slammed it shut before she picked up her bowl of oats and inspected it for a moment. “I am definitely not eating this anymore” she declared.
She walked into her bathroom and fixed her own bath, she went ahead to brush her teeth while waiting for the tub to get filled before she took off her clothes and stepped in, relaxing into the tub and enjoying the feel of the strawberry scented bubbles against her skin while she hummed out her favorite song as she scrubbed her body.
In a short while, she got out of the tub and pulled out the plug, the water drained out as she stepped into the shower to rinse her body.
She dried off herself, dried her hair and walked into her closet to pick out something to wear, she settled for a blue skinny jean with a yellow T-shirt, she brushed her long straight honey blonde hair and let it fall on her shoulders and tucked the stray hair behind her ears; she sat in front of her vanity table and applied casual makeup, wore her rose scented body spray and slipped on her easy wear on her perfectly manicured feet and left her room.
She met Alexa in front of her own room dressed in a light blue and bright pink flowered t-shirt paired with a baggy jean, they both headed down to the kitchen to help make breakfast so they could all eat together with their parents when they arrive.
“What’s for breakfast?” Alexa inquired gaining the attention of everyone in the kitchen as she gloriously stepped in.
“Pancakes and maple syrup” one of the young maid replied smiling at the radiant looking Alexa.
“Sweeeeet!! How can we help?” Brenda asked as she appeared from behind Alexa grinning widely.
“You could whisk the milk and eggs together honey” Mrs. Cruz replied smiling and handing over a large bowl containing eggs and a jar of milk to Brenda.
“What should I do?” Alexa asked eagerly.
“Uhhhh sit over there honey” Mrs. Cruz replied pointing towards the little dinning set that sat at the corner of the kitchen.
Alexa pushed her lips forward and walked over to the table like a drenched sad puppy and sank into one of the chairs, she folded her arms over her chest and watched as everyone continued doing one thing or the other to put breakfast in place. Her frown deepened as she caught her sister smiling widely at her but her eyes lit up as she motioned her to come over.
She sprang up to her feet and went over to her sister who was now holding out the bowl of eggs to her.
“Let’s do it together, there are so many of them” Brenda whispered to her when they now stood facing each other.
Alexa raised herself up balancing her weight on the counter top beside her sister as they both began to break the eggs.
The other maids carried out their various chores silently, the only sounds heard were the sounds of the roaring blender and the loud clinging of glass and silver wears.
“When are they arriving?” Alexa demanded breaking the silence.
“In about half an hour’s time” Mrs. Cruz replied briefly glancing at the huge wooden wall clock that oddly hung in the kitchen before fixing her gaze back on the flour she was sieving.
In no time, the table was all set with everything in place, as well as the chilled orange flavored drink Alexa insisted they made and they all headed to the living room to await the parents who according to Mrs. Cruz’s calculation, should be arriving any moment from now.
Alexa decided to turn on the TV while they waited, she cheered with joy when her favorite episode of ‘The Thundermans’ came up on the huge plasma screen that hung on the smooth plain white wall of their expensively furnished living room.
She sat leg crossed right in front of the TV with her eyes glued to it while sipping a glass of orange juice.
Several minutes had passed and Brenda now sat by the window, her gaze fixed on the driveway awaiting their parent’s arrival, Mrs. Cruz and the maids were nowhere within sight.
“Brie they’re supposed to be home by now right?” Alexa asked looking in her sister’s direction.
Brenda wordlessly nodded her gaze still fixed outside the window until Mrs. Cruz emerged from the kitchen and both girls turned in her direction.
“Why haven’t they arrived yet Mrs. Cruz?” Alexa inquired now turning off the TV switching her gaze from Brenda to Mrs. Cruz.
“Perhaps they stopped over somewhere” Mrs. Cruz replied in her most assuring tone.
Alexa didn’t seem too convinced with her response as she knew her parents never stopped by the way during a journey.
“Well, let’s call them and find out what’s going on” Alexa suggested
“I can’t reach them, I have tried, I’m still trying, but I still can’t get through to them” Mrs. Cruz announced to the girls who now both wore identical expressions on their almost similar faces.
“Oh c’mon girls, don’t wear such long gloomy faces, they’ll be here soon, all we need to do is wait” Mrs. Cruz said trying to assure the girls as she pulled them both into her arms and squeezed tightly for a few seconds before releasing them and ruffling Alexa’s hair flashing them a soft smile as the sisters relaxed a bit at her soothing words.
“Brie honey, sit with Alexa, I need to…………..” Mrs. Cruz began but was abruptly interrupted by the loud ringing of the home’s hotline.
Brenda rushed and picked up the call while Alexa and Mrs. Cruz gathered round her.
“Uhhhh Hello??” Brenda whispered unsure of what to say
“Hello Good Morning” was the immediate reply in an official tone “Am I onto the Montez’s home line?” the stranger inquired.
“Yes, I am Brenda Montez, is anything the matter?”
The stranger mumbled a few words to a now wide-eyed, obviously shocked Brenda.
“OH MY GOODNESS, we’ll be on our way!!!” Brenda quickly responded before slamming down the receiver and turned to her sister, worry written all over her face.
“Get me my car keys, we need to get moving” Brenda barked out to no one in particular.
“Get moving? To where? What’s going on?” Alexa questioned.
“What is the matter Brie?” Mrs. Cruz added when Brenda didn’t respond.
“Mom and Dad had an accident” she eventually replied amidst sobs.
