Chapter 1
Amora's pov
"Amora, Amora, wake up, dear," my mother's soft, high-pitched voice says as she taps me repeatedly. I open my very sleepy eyes, and I'm almost blinded by the rays of the sun creeping in from my draped curtains.
The birds are chirping, and my nostrils finally receive the familiar smell of the lavender perfume my mother uses. I turn to her, and she's grinning at me. I immediately remember that it was my first day of college.
"Come on, dear, get up. I have prepared a bath for you in your bathroom, and breakfast is also ready. Everyone is waiting for you at the table, so quickly get ready," she says, and I quietly sit up and then stand up. She smiles at me and then walks out of the room as I admire the floral patterns on her blue dress and how it dances around her ankles.
The first day of college, the day I have been waiting for, is finally here, but why do I feel like my stomach is being tied into knots? It is unlike me to be this nervous about anything.
It takes me less than ten minutes to get ready, and I admire the black jeans and plain white t-shirt my mother picked out for me, possibly while I was still asleep as I stood in front of my dressing mirror.
"Okay, there's nothing to be worried about; you have got this," I say to my reflection and tuck my silky black hair behind my ears.
I take a deep breath and walk out the door and down the stairs, my hands trailing the gold railings as I take deep breaths.
I walk into the lunch room, where I meet my family, already seated and chatting away. The table is well laid out with eggs, bacon, and bread. The warm smell of milk chocolate fills the air, and my stomach rumbles.
"You look amazing." My mother smiles at me and nudges me to come and take my seat on the chair next to my brother Stefen .
I sit down and slowly begin to eat in silence. I can't stop thinking about what to expect at college. I hope everyone is going to like me, especially the professors.
"Amora," my father started, and I dropped my fork immediately. My eyes meet his. Those deep black eyes that stare at you like they can see your soul-I can't get used to his cold stare and firmly tightened jaws.
I realize I am lagging behind in my response and quickly snap back to reality as I immediately remember how to blink.
"Yes, father," I replied.
"You will be starting college today, and I want you to remember that you are going to be among humans." A pause. "I want you to try your best to hide the fact that you're a werewolf; try your possible best to fit in as a human," he continued.
My eyes narrow in disapproval, but I dare not utter a word against his will. Not only am I starting college in a school of only humans, but I am also expected to make sure no one finds out my true identity.
"Why?" I say it before my brain can process the severity of that word. My mom's eyes dart towards me, and she gives me a questioning look.
My dad clears his throat and takes a gulp from the glass of water beside him before continuing.
"You see, humans are very wary of wolves like us; they are not friendly to us at all, and if the Silver Pack wants to expand and become undefeatable, we must cooperate with them and investigate stronger potions. Do you understand?" He asks as he gulps down the rest of the water.
I have so many more questions I don't dare ask, like why they are sending me to a college where I obviously won't fit in and where everybody is weary of people like me. How am I supposed to keep this secret?
I glance at my mom, and she nods slowly.
"Yes, father," I smile.
After eating, Mom told Stefen to drive me to school, and in less than thirty minutes, we were staring at its large metal gates.
My heart races as I get out of the car, and he waves goodbye.
I take a deep breath and walk through the gates. It is a large compound with buildings that stretch farther than my eyes can see. People are walking about in groups or cliques; everyone is just going about their usual business.
"Are you new?" I feel a hand tap my shoulder, and I abruptly turn around. A middle-aged man in a navy blue uniform with tag security on his chest is towering over me.
"Yes sir" I smile.
"Okay, welcome to Ella's Memorial College you will drop your stuff at the room allocation center," he points to the first block, and I nod.
"You will be given your room key, and they will take your things there for you while you proceed to the orientation room, where others like you are already gathered." He points to the opposite building and smiles keenly. I couldn't help but admire his kindness.
I proceed to the room allocation center with my two giant suitcases, and after that, I walk into the orientation room.
My jaw drops at the sight of the crowd. Everyone is seated, and a man is talking to the crowd. I take my seat between two girls around my age.
"Hi, I'm Lily," the one on the left says. She has pretty green eyes, and her blonde short hair complements them.
"I'm Amora," I reply, and she smiles. She looks beyond me and to the girl on my right, who is busy tapping away on her phone.
"That's my friend Amanda," she says, and the girl turns to look at us. Her face is freckle-filled, and her brown eyes are hidden behind a pair of glasses. She's pretty, but not as pretty as Lily.
We spend the next thirty minutes talking about our lives, and because I can't tell anyone about my life, I say nothing.
After the orientation, we decided to meet up later tonight for the orientation party. Parties are not really my thing, and I want to decline, but I just made my first friends, and I can't say no to them.
I returned to my room and put all my things in place, and around 10 p.m. it was time for the party. I met Amanda and Lily in front of the venue wearing very short skirts and revealing parts of my body.
"Is that what you're wearing?" Amanda asks, making me feel inferior in my leather pants and top.
"Yes," I whisper, and we all walk into the party room. Loud music pierces through my ears, and we walk into the crowd. People are dancing, couples are making out, the place is bustling with energy, and I almost can't see anything under the blue neon lights.
I stick to a corner of the room while Amanda and Layla dance with the boys and take several shots of alcohol. I'm starting to get bored, and I regret coming here in the first place.
"Come on, let's go play a game." Amanda pulls me as she points at a group hurdle at a ping pong table where the loser has to take a shot.
I resist a little and then agree to go with her, and after a series of losses and drinks, I fall to a chair, completely drunk and wasted.
Soon, Amanda and Lily both joined me on the seat. Amanda pulls out her phone and begins to swipe on the screen at the faces of different men.
"What's that? What are you doing?" I ask, and they both laugh hysterically.
"Are you joking or have you really never used a hook-up app before?" She rolls her eyes at me, and I just look at them with confusion written all over my face.
"You're serious, wow. Well, there is no way we are ending this night without getting laid; give me your phone." Lily smiles, and I hand it over to her.
I believe that as a werewolf, the only person I should have is my mate, but I can't tell them I'm a werewolf, so I have to do it with whoever they choose for me.
"Here, this guy seems nice." She points to a man with neatly trimmed hair and a beard.
"He looks as old as my father," I protest, and Amanda laughs mockingly.
"Older men are the best, don't you know? Come on, it says he is really close by; you have to find him. Amanda and I are going to meet ours." Lily replies, and they both disappear, leaving me all alone.
One more glance at my phone, and I am determined to find a perfect match. Soon, the app matched me with a middle-aged man with a perfect face and jawline. Everything about his picture asserted dominance, and I was immediately attracted to him.
"His name is Kane," I whisper to myself.
Kane pov
The fresh scent of jasmine mixed with the smell of cool pinewood greeted me as I walked into the orientation party. I am determined to find this smell because I know it can only mean one thing.
My phone flashes, and I realize I have been matched on the hook-up app I use. I look up, and I see a petite black-haired girl waving her phone at me.
"She must be the one," I whisper, and I walk towards her.
As I walk closer, the smell gets stronger, and I notice it's coming from her. This petite girl is my mate. I am overwhelmed with excitement. I have finally found the mate I have been searching for.
I finally met her and ran my fingers through her silky black hair, grabbed her hand, and hugged her before pulling her out of the party.
I don't realize how drunk she is till she says, "I love your perfume," and I smile. We get to a room, and before I have any control, she has taken off her clothes, and I am staring at her perfect body.
Without hesitation, I grab her and kiss her softly. Our lips move with the sand tempo, and soon we are both on the bed. We have the time of our lives, and I fall tired beside her.
She looks at me, then at my wrist, and traces the cross tattoo on it.
"I hope you will think of me tonight when you see this tattoo, and when you see this tattoo, I'll be here to protect you," I whisper and she smiles before falling into a deep sleep.
Amora's pov
The sun was out, birds were chirping loudly, and I yawned several times as I woke up to the loud ringing of my phone.
The splitting headache I'm having makes the room shift in and out of focus, and I struggle to pick up my phone.
"Hello," I yawned again.
"Amora, where are you? You are going to be late for class," Lily yells, and my eyes pry open.
I quickly gather my things and rush to my room, where I pick up a few things and rush to class. This is not the impression I was looking for, but there was nothing I could do.
I got to class and sat beside Lily, who was sitting beside Amanda. I slowly tried to breathe normally after all the rush and running.
"Wow, you look like crap. Did you get laid?" Lily whispered, and I grinned as flashes of the previous night came flooding back to me.
"Yes, I did." I laughed, and they all laughed.
Immediately, the classroom became quiet, and I looked up to see who just walked in from the front door.
I gasp at the sight of him, and we immediately find each other as our eyes meet, and I couldn't bring myself to look away. My heart races, and I soon forget how to breathe. It's like the whole world stops and my body yearns for him.
Only for him, the man who was supposed to be my one-night stand is also my professor.
