Chapter 12: The Clue

395 Words
I wait outside of the house to check that no one was home and once I was in the clear, I went into the house and searched in every room, starting with the living room. Everything was still in place. All of my books, making me miss home. Okay, so where would Adam leave the threats? After looking in the living room and kitchen, I came out empty-handed. As I walked up the stairs to Adam’s office, the door was shockingly unlocked so as soon as I got into his office, I searched around until I got to his desk. This is where he keeps the financial records. Lifting up a folder, I pull out the paperwork inside. I start to flip through the pages when I come across a blue sticky note. Pay the piper if the rats are gone, $15,000? What the hell does this even mean? As I flipped the note over, I saw a number so I took a small piece of paper in a notebook and jotted the number down quickly, then shoving it in my pocket. As I reach for another drawer, it wouldn’t open. The dumbass must’ve locked it and hit under his desk. How stupid. As soon as I had the key in hand, I was able to unlock the drawer and carefully went through it until I came to an unlabeled yellow folder in the way back. Hmm...I’ve never seen this. I take it out and look at it. It’s a contract of some sort. As I read down, I realize it’s a life insurance policy. It was dated from three months ago and noticed the forged signature of mine. It looks identical but I don’t recall signing anything. It’s for five MILLION dollars! He took out a contract on me?! What the hell! In awe, I put it back in the folder and placed it in the location where I found it. That bastard. I shut the door and as I looked around, I went into the bedroom. I may as well grab some clothes.  As soon as I walk in, I see boxes piled on top of one another with MY stuff! I went into my closet and saw a big bag I bought a while back and started shoving some things in it. He must be planning a divorce. I smiled. I was going to leave the smug bastard anyways. I suddenly heard a noise come from downstairs. Shit! I heard Adam’s footsteps and a giggle. He’s not alone.
