Chapter 10

853 Words
I grew up with Sam so this was my second home. Her house was just down the street from ours.. When I was outside her house I ran around the house to her window. They had a one story house so I wouldn’t have to worry about climbing the building like in spy movies. I knocked on her window and she opened it quickly. ’Shhhhh!’ she said in a hushed tone and then she helped me into her room. ‘Thanks for letting me stay.’ I whispered and dropped my backpack on the floor. I walked to her bed and fell onto it. Sam closed the window and fell on the other side of the bed. She had a queen size bed so luckily it was big enough for us. When I asked her about the bed a few months ago she told me ‘I am the queen of this house so I deserve to have a bed fit for a queen.’ We laughed so hard that day. It is strange how quickly things could change. ‘So you broke out of your jail cell. You’ve got guts kid.’ She started laughing and shoved me a little. When she noticed that I wasn’t laughing with her she stopped and sat up in the bed. ‘Is it that bad?’ she asked me. ‘No Sam, it’s worse. I don’t know what I’m going to do! I can’t go home. She will have me admitted in a mental hospital for running away.’ I sat up and stared at her. ‘You can’t tell anyone I’m here, especially your parents. Promise me Sam.’ She laid her hand on top of mine and said ‘I promise.’ I hugged her and started to cry. She rubbed my back with her hand in little circles. ‘It’s okay. You are going to be okay. We will figure this out together.’ She reassured me.   I don’t remember falling asleep, but I was woken up by someone banging on Sam’s front door. I knew it was my mom without even hearing her voice. Sam got out of bed and stared wide eyed at me. ‘Who is it?’ she whispered. I got out of bed, grabbed all of my belongings and whispered back ‘Mom.’ It was too late to make a run for it. I shrugged my shoulders at Sam and whispered ‘What now?’ She ran to her closet and opened the door. It was a solid wooden door with a mirror on both sides of the wooden door. She had a walk in closet. I nodded at her and walked silently into the closet. I looked around the big space and decided to hide behind her clothes that were on rails. The cupboards were too small to hide in and I needed to be out of sight when someone entered the closet. I stayed quiet and waited for our parents to enter the room. Sam made sure I was hidden, nodded at me and closed the door slowly. We waited in silence for a disaster to unfold. A few minutes later I heard Sam’s bedroom door flying open. ‘Calm down Leila! Your daughter is not here.’ I recognized the voice and it belonged to Sam’s mom, Madison. ‘Don’t tell me to calm down! My daughter is missing!’ she yelled at Madison. ‘What’s going on? What time is it anyway?’ I heard Sam asking our parents. ‘Have you talked to Ava or heard anything from her?’ her mom asked her. ‘No, why? Has something happened to her?’ I rolled my eyes at her answer. She loved putting on a scene and acting innocent. She was such a drama queen, but it was one of the qualities that I loved about Sam. She could get you out of trouble by just flipping her hair and batting her eyes. She knew how to talk her way out of everything. ‘I’m afraid that she is missing. No one has seen her since last night.' ‘Ava would never run away. She seemed fine yesterday afternoon.’ ‘It’s alright. She will show up, maybe the stress just to her.’ Her mother said. I heard murmurs and then they left the room. I stayed hidden in the closet. Sam opened the closet door and I got out. ‘Great job with that performance by the way. If I could give you a Grammy award, I would.’ She bowed dramatically and said ‘Thank you, thank you!’ we both laughed and then clutched our mouths shut. She made a scolding face at me. ‘Now get out of my room before I get shipped off to boarding school for hiding a felon in my bedroom.’ and waved a finger at me. ‘No, seriously, climb out of the window and get in the backseat of my car. I will be right out. I already unlocked the car so you can just get in.’ she pushed me towards the window and opened it slowly. ‘After you, my escaped convict.’ I laughed at her and climbed out of the window. She always knew how to make me feel better.  When I was outside I ran towards her car. I grabbed the door handle but before I could open the car door I was pulled back and up into the air.
