Chapter 9

‘Go back inside Ava.’ He pointed towards the house. He had a black hoodie on with jeans and sneakers. His face was completely sealed off. All I saw was those big white feathered wings. ‘Who are you?’ I asked ‘That does not matter. What matters is that you should be in doors especially this time of night.’ He kept looking away as if he was afraid that I would recognize him. I crossed my arms over my chest and stared at the hooded figure. ‘You are not the boss of me. I have been through hell these past couple of weeks.’ He winced when I mentioned the word hell. ‘I know’ was all he said. ‘Can I go now? I want to be gone before my mom realizes that I’m gone If you would excuse me.’ When I took a step forward he grabbed me by my arms. ‘You are not listening! It’s not safe. I can’t protect you anymore.’ I sucked in my breath. He was touching me and he sent that fire through my body again. He didn’t move away from me or let me go. He was an inch away from me. He was staring at me and breathing heavily. I gasped for air and then he broke off the hold on me. He turned away and stared up into the sky. I walked towards him and stood right next to him. ‘Why are you so concerned about my safety?’ I waited for a reply. ‘I have been watching over you since you were born Ava. I have watched you grow. I was there every time you were in danger. I was there when you needed a shoulder to cry on, even a friend.’ He turned towards me and looked me straight into my eyes. I could make out that his eye colour was blue under the hood. ‘I have always been there for you and I have always loved you.’ He waited for a reply but I didn’t have one. He was in love with a girl that didn’t even know he existed. Who was this winged man? ‘What’s your name?’ I asked instead of commenting on his reply. ‘Julian’ he said and stared up into the sky again. ‘Julian’ I repeated. ‘I like it. It’s very unique.’ He laughed at my statement. I frowned at him. ‘What’s so funny?’ I asked him. ‘You are taking all of this really well. I always imagined you freaking out and telling me that I was insane.’ He stopped laughing and stood very still. He looked like a beautiful carved stone statue that was standing right in front of me. He really did look unreal. Maybe I should just make sure this is real since my dreams have become so vivid so I reached out to him and touched his shoulder gently and asked ‘Are you an angel Julian?’ He only nodded yes at my question. ‘Why are you protecting me Julian?’ he turned towards me, grabbed both of my hands and placed them into his. He was so gentle, I blushed at his touch. ‘That is something that I do not know. Only you know the answer to that question.’ I stared up at him. How am I supposed to know? It sounds like the same speech I get from the dark figure that haunts me in my dreams.  ‘May I?’ I touched the hood of his jacket, but he turned away. ‘It is better if you do not know who I am.’ ‘Do you know what happened to me Julian?’ he winced at my words and then nodded. ‘Did you save me?’ He took a deep breath and said ‘No, I tried to but I couldn’t reach you in your dream. I stood over your body and watched you bleeding. You saved yourself Ava. I don’t know how you did it, but you got yourself out.’ I took all this information in. I couldn’t have gotten myself out. I blacked out, but I couldn’t tell him that. I decided to change the subject instead. ‘I saw you.’ ‘I don’t know what you mean.’ He said. ‘I saw you in the hospital the day I woke up from the coma. You came to visit me when everyone was asleep.’ He took my hands again as if it was a natural thing to do. My face turned red again. No man has ever touched me let alone an angel.  ‘Please understand. I had to make sure that you were alright. I hated being in the background. You were so pale and lifeless. All of the doctors said that you were dying. When you woke up they called it a miracle, even your parents said goodbye to you. No one thought that you would pull through, no one except me. I know your a fighter Ava, you always have been angel.’ He let go of one of my hands and caressed my cheek. I sighed and closed my eyes and got lost in the moment. Julian had an effect on me that no one else possessed. When I opened my eyes he let go of me and stepped away from me and stared up at the sky again. ‘This was a mistake. You are not allowed to know that I exist. I could get in trouble for this and taken away from you.’ He started walking away as if making up his mind that this was a huge mistake when I grabbed his hand. ‘Don’t go.’ I pleaded and hoped that he would stay with me. He turned around and pulled me into his arms. ‘I wish I could stay. I only want to be with you. It has been so hard staying away from you angel, only able to watch you from the shadows. Never able to touch you.’ He let me go and sighed. The flames died down in my body.  ‘You are in grave danger angel. You are not safe. I have to keep you safe and if that means that you will not see me again after tonight then I will stay away.’ He flew up into the sky before I could protest. I watched him fly away until the darkness swallowed him whole. I stared in awe. He was an angel, my angel. I decided to go to Sam’s house instead. I knew that she would hide me so I texted her on my way over to her house. Can I come over? My phone vibrated and I checked the incoming text message Of course! My window! She replied me immediately. See you soon! I ran as fast as I could to her house keeping an eye on the shadows.
