Chapter 1
"Alex, we need to talk," Emma said, her voice shaking with her hidden anger. She stood in the spacious living room of their penthouse; her arms were wrapped tightly around her chest with frustration. Alexander barely looked up from his laptop, his fingers flying over the keyboard typing. "Can't it wait, Emma? I'm in the middle of something important." "That's the problem," Emma snapped, her eyes burning with anger. "Everything is always more important than us. Than me." He breathed deeply, and Alexander closed his laptop and leaned back in his chair to look at her. "Emma, you know how demanding my work is. I'm doing this for us, for our future, for a better life." "Is that what you call it?" Emma shouted. “Is that what you call a better life? Because it feels like you're doing it for yourself and your precious family’s reputation. When was the last time we spent a night together without you checking your emails or taking a business call? You don't want me to work; I barely go out or have friends, and yet you hardly give me attention. Sometimes I feel you’re just too selfish and that your family is all that matters to you." Alexander's eyes flashed with anger as he jumped up. Before Emma could move, he slapped her face, causing a sharp pain. The room seemed to spin around her. She was horrified, and tears filled her eyes. “You're always bringing up my family," Alexander growled, his voice low and scary. Emma's hand went to her sore cheek as she stepped back. She grabbed her coat, and her hands shook. Crying, she turned and ran out of the apartment, closing the door hard behind her. "Emma, wait," Alexander called after her, feeling remorseful for hitting her again after he promised not to from the last time, but before he could stop her, she was already out the door, the sound of it slamming shut echoing through the penthouse. Tears were streaming from Emma's eyes as she ran through the chilly streets of New York City, holding her cheek. She needed a drink, some loud music, and a place to forget about the mess her life had become. She found herself outside a trendy bar and pushed her way inside. The sound of the music immediately came up, and with relief in her heart, she whispered, ‘Just what I needed.’ She made her way to the bar and ordered a chilled drink, hoping it would help her forget the argument she just had with Alexander and the pain she was going through. As she sipped her cocktail, she noticed a free and comfortable chair where she could relax and while away in her thoughts. Just as she was about to cross the small passage to the chair, she accidentally knocked over someone and spilled her drink. She lifted up her head; she met the warm gaze of a charming stranger, whose bright smile and sparkling eyes instantly captivated her. “I’m so sorry, I didn't see you." Emma uttered while trying to clean the drink stain on his cloth. “It's fine. It happens a lot." He responded with a smile on his face as he watched her try restlessly. “Allow me to buy you another drink," holding her hand from cleaning his cloth. He asked. Emma smiled, “No, don’t bother." “I insist,” he responded. Emma had a calm thought in her mind: ‘There’s no harm in having a drink with someone new after all; she wanted to while away time before heading back to her life filled with frustration.’ "Alright, that's fine." I’m Ryan, by the way," extending his hand. "Emma," she replied, shaking his hand. “Nice to meet you, Ryan,” as they sat on the chair facing the bar. "Rough night?" Ryan asked, moving closer. "You could say that." They started talking, sharing their stories over a few more drinks. Ryan was a corporate lawyer, just like Alexander, but there was something different about him. He listened to her, really listened, and his presence was comforting. "What brings you here tonight?" Emma asked. "Lost a big case today," Ryan admitted with a remorseful smile. "Felt like I needed a break from everything." "I can relate," Emma said, her voice softening. "I'm engaged to someone who's always too busy for me. It feels like I'm invisible to him." Ryan's eyes darkened with understanding. "That sounds tough." "It is," Emma said, taking another sip of her drink. "But tonight, I want to take my mind off things for a while.” Ryan nodded, his gaze holding hers. "Then let's just have fun tonight." They continued talking, sharing laughter and stories; the chemistry between them was undeniable. As the night wore on, the bar's music seemed to fade into the background, leaving just the two of them in their own world. Their eyes locked, and they moved closer, each word drawing them nearer. The warmth of his breath mingled with hers as their faces inch closer together. Finally, their lips met in a tender yet passionate kiss, a perfect blend of softness and urgency. It felt like a release of all the tension and frustration they had been holding onto—a connection that sparked a fire within them both. His hands gently cradled her face, while hers tangled in his hair, pulling him closer as the kiss deepened. "I have an apartment close by, so we could go there," Ryan muttered. ” Emma nodded her head, looking drunk and all tensed up, while Ryan quickly grabbed his coat and made his way straight to the car. On arriving at the apartment, they kissed all the way to the bedroom while climbing the stairs. Emma hesitated for a second before saying, "Stop; I can't do this. Are you sure?" Ryan responded, “Because I can just read your body, those goosebumps on your neck, and how fast your heart’s pounding. I know you want this; you want me to kiss you, slow and deep, my tongue moving down your neck, chest, stomach, all the way till I'm under your skirt. Emma was now letting out a loud moan as he touched her. He went on, "I'm going to make sure you have the best night ever while sliding his finger inside her underwear." Emma threw herself at his feet, falling onto the bed and giving him a passionate kiss. Desire consumed them throughout the night, each touch and caress igniting a burning need they couldn't resist. Their bodies moved in perfect harmony, every kiss and embrace intensifying the passion between them. When Emma woke up the next morning, she found herself in a stranger's bed, the memory of their shared night still vivid in her mind. She felt a sharp pain in her head, but the lingering warmth of his touch and the echo of their connection brought a soft, bittersweet smile to her lips. ‘What just happened?’ she whispered. Her heart raced as she quietly gathered her clothes and tiptoed out of the apartment. As she stepped into the hallway, she realized she didn't even know where she was. She searched for her phone in her bag and quickly ordered a ride home, hoping to get back before Alexander noticed her absence. Back in the penthouse, Emma slipped inside, relieved to find it empty. She quickly rushed into the bathroom, trying to wash away the guilt and confusion from the night before. She sat in the bathtub, pondering how drunk she got that stirred last night. Just as she was about to settle down and collect her thoughts, her phone buzzed with a text message, distracting her from her thoughts. She stepped out of the bathroom to check the message. "Emma, we need to talk. Please." It was from Ryan. Her heart was beating fast. How did he get her number? Before she could process this, she heard the sound of keys on the door. Alexander was home early. Panic surged through her as she shoved her phone into her wardrobe, covering it with her pressed clothes, trying to compose herself. "Emma?" Alexander called, stepping into the living room. "We need to talk."
