When school let out, Lucy couldn't help but ask me, "Amber, are you really not going?"
I nodded silently. Yes, I had turned down James' invitation, and I could still picture his disappointed expression.
"Why did you refuse? Can you tell me the reason?" Lucy pressed, her eyes full of confusion and bewilderment.
I remembered James' parents' stern faces and their cutting remarks, laced with contempt and disrespect towards me.
Yes, I couldn't stand, or even hated James' parents, but I couldn't tell Lucy this reason. I had to find an excuse to appease her.
"It's nothing really, Lucy. Today... I need to review for the upcoming exams, that’s all."
