CHAPTER NINE
I stood by the roadside, waiting for Taxi when I saw one coming towards my direction. I quickly stretched my hand to it and the taxi made a halt at my front. I walked in and I told the driver "Venice street", he looked at me and answered with "Okay ma". He was about to drive me to the place when I asked "How much is the transport fare?".
The driver turned his head back and replied me that "5 dollars, madam". "5 dollars?" my eyes widened as I heard the amount coming from his mouth. "Oh! Thank God I asked him the amount now before we take our leave" I whispered, praying to God silently.
I checked my bag to see if I have that exact amount with me. I looked into my bag very thoroughly and then, I brought out the money I found inside it. I counted it and it was exactly the amount the driver called it "5 dollars!".
I turned to face the driver who had been watching me through the mirror and said "Okay... Let's go". He replied me and bended his head lightly to show a sign of respect "Absolutely, madam", and then he zoomed off.
I rested my head while he was driving me to the company and within some minutes, he made a halt at the front of the company and faced me, saying "Madam, here we are". I looked around as I thought in my mind "Really? So fast" and he answered me, saying "Yes, madam".
I alighted from the car and took out the actual amount he asked me to pay from my bag. I didn't have to count it again so I handed it over to him and he greeted me, saying "Thanks ma" and he drove off, leaving me beside the road.
I left the road and stepped onto the stairs. I looked around the company one more time and I remembered the first day I came here. I heaved a sigh and stared at the penthouses that surrounded the company.
I waited for some minutes before I breathed in and out. I comported myself so calmly and said "Helen, you can do this... let's go". I slung my bag behind me and walked straight inside the company.
As usual, the company was filled up like the other time when I first came inside. I was about to walk into the CEO'S office when I remembered what happened the other time. "Let's follow protocol, Helen" I whispered to myself and I turned back to meet the secretary at the reception room.
"Good morning ma" she greeted, beaming at me.
"Good morning" I answered her.
"Yes ma... What can we do for you, madam?" she asked me.
I looked around the place, then to the CEO'S office. I thought in my mind as I said "I have no choice... You have to do this again". I turned to face the secretary back and said to her "I am here to see the CEO".
"The CEO?" she asked me.
"Yes, the CEO" I replied her.
"Okay ma... You will have to wait over there so I can put a call through to him" she explained to me, while coming outside to show me the way to the waiting room.
"Oh my! Not again!" I said, stamping my feet on the ground. Just then, one of the security men came towards me and asked that "Sorry ma'am... Are you Miss Helen?".
I made a halt on the way while following the secretary to the waiting room and turned around to face the person. I didn't hesitate or think about the situation and I answered "Yes, I am".
The secretary who had been listening to our conversation since, turned to face the security and said "She's here to see to see the CEO and not just anyone could see the CEO like that so that's why I was taking her to wait for him at the waiting room while I put a call through to the CEO... I hope you know that".
She explained to the security man and I was there watching them like a dumb when the security man spoke out that "The CEO sent for her, he asked me to bring her over so do not worry OK" he told the secretary.
I could see the jealous in the secretary's eyes and how she felt but I rolled my eyes up at her and faced the security man. "Please, come with me madam" he said, while he headed to the direction of the CEO'S office.
I followed him behind, while looking around to scan every activities in the company. "Helen, your work as a Bodyguard has started already" I chuckled at myself. I stared at the amazing sight of the company "I didn't see this very clearly the other time" I whispered within myself as I followed the security man sluggishly from behind.
"Probably because I was rushing and I wasn't in my right frame of mind that day" I concluded to myself and I came to a stop when I saw the security man talking to another man who dressed corporate so he didn't seem like a Security man.
He walked towards me and greeted "Hello madam". I replied him, bending my head a bit slightly "Hello sir".
"I was the one that spoke with you over the phone the other time" he explained to me.
"Ohh..." I said, as soon as I remembered.
"Okay... Like I said earlier, congrats to you" he uttered, stretching his hand towards me for a shake.
"Oops... Thank you, sir" I said, as it took me a while to take his handshake.
"I was asked to picked you up by the CEO so you can follow me up" he said, directing me over to the stairs.
"What's the scenario?" I asked myself rhetorically as I walked through the stairs.
Just then, he made a halt at the front of a big office with over countless of guards that I could not count, surrounding the door. He showed them his Identity card and they allowed him a pass. I was about following from behind when they they stopped me on the way.
"Who is she?" one of the guards said.
"She's the CEO'S visitor" the man I followed behind told them and the guard signaled to the one of the other guards to call the CEO on the telephone.
We waited for like several minutes before he could get across to the CEO on the phone. "Why the tight surveillance all of a sudden?" I asked myself, then I continued "What's it because of me?".
Just then, the guard reached out to us that we could go in and I followed the man from behind. I opened my mouth so widely as we entered his office. He turned his back to us, facing the window when the man I followed in called him "Good morning, boss".
"Good morning" the CEO answered, shortly.
"I've brought the woman here with me, sir" he told the CEO.
"Okay... You can go" the CEO replied him, waving at him to go outside.
It was then I noticed something about the CEO. His stature has changed, his height, just everything about him have changed. I was still thinking that probably it was because I was under tension the other time that was why my eyes were deceiving me then.
The CEO turned his head and faced me, with a cigarette in his mouth which he was smoking. I looked at him more closer and I could see it wasn't the CEO I knew or met the other time. "This is another person!" I exclaimed, closing my mouth with the palm of my hand.
He strode towards his seat and beckoned to me to come sit "Hello, madam". I staggered when I heard his voice and I replied him "Yes... Sir... I am coming" while I walked sluggishly to meet him over his table.
"Don't be afraid... I know you are surprised to see that this is not the person you saw when you came in the other time" he chuckled.
"Yes... Yes sir" I managed to say after gathering a little bit of confidence in me.
"Okay... It's okay. However, this is where your deal is signed" he said, bringing out a contract proposal and dropped it at my front.
"No... I only signed a deal with one person" I stuttered.
"Madam... I hope you know what the deal agreement said" he reminded me.
"......." I couldn't talk as any word wasn't coming out from my mouth. Then, he stood up and came forward to my direction. He bended his head lightly beside me and whispered "I hope you still remember what the deal says".
I nodded my head affirmatively out of shock and he screamed, while he shouted "That's good of you" and then he continued "So here is the deal... You are spending 100 days and nights with me as a Bodyguard".
My breath skipped a little and I suddenly went out of breath, he ran towards the fridge and brought out water for me to drink. I grabbed the water from his mouth and quickly exhausted it all, while spitting everything back at him from my mouth.
He stood angrily and strode towards the window to clean up his mouth. He waited for about five minutes before he walked back to me, shouting "And what the hell did you just do?". I couldn't answer as I was in shock and I was feeling feverish already.
He kept on ranting and yelling at me. I stood up but my leg was stiffed, I couldn't move it. He came roaring towards me like a lion. "What's happening?" I asked myself rhetorically and a voice began to ring so loudly in my head.
He chuckled and said "Here is the contract... Stamp on it". He yelled, handing over the contract to me while he collected my bag and began to search inside for my stamp. He brought it out as soon as he found my stamp and handed it over to me with the contract paper, asking me to stamp on it.
After a lot of pressure, I succumbed to his threats and stamped the contract deal. I signed with tears welling my eyes up. "He's a psycho..." I uttered with tears of anguish in my eyes, forming itself into a question in my head "Had I known...".
He collected the contract paper and laughed hysterically while he went to the other side to sit on his chair. He looked at me with amusement and I watched him, staring at the contract deal.
"That's it, Madam" he said, hanging the contract paper in the air while he called someone on the telephone. In a twinkling of an eye, the person came inside and collected the contract paper from him. I fell on my feet with tears that was enough to float a ship in my eyes.
The person he called over the phone wouldn't answer me and he left me, rolling on the floor with the CEO watching me from his seat. I wailed and wailed all over again but no one was coming to help me. I surrendered when I saw that my voice was not longer heard and I looked at the CEO'S with contempt in the eyes.
"The deal is signed..." I murmured within myself as my mother and brother's words struck my mind. I should have listened to them and stayed behind at home, instead of signing a contract deal with the person I don't know or I have met before.
To be continued...
