Awkward Settings

It was uncomfortably silent. Jordan and I were perfectly synced, it was almost as if we were dancing around the coffee shop. Neither of us looked at the other one, then I flipped the sign and the real work began. Coffee after coffee, order after order, we didn't spare one glance toward each other. Remembering back to last night, the image of his broken face haunted my thoughts. His shoulders slumped and I could tell without even looking at him that his sparky personality was dimmed. Not one bottle flipped through our whole shift. I could feel my heart aching for him. He was so sure last night, then my lie broke him. I wanted to say something, but couldn't think of the words to say. Just then, I felt a shiver as the door opened. Dillan. Our eyes locked and I forgot about every other person in the room. A half smile appeared on his lips, and my heart did a flip as he came up to the counter. I realized I hadn't taken a breath since he walked in. Breathe. I turned around and poured his coffee before he had the chance to order. I placed it on the counter, very carefully, and told him his total. "Hey you remembered my order." His half smile turned to a big grin, and his bright blue eyes lit up as he handed me the money. I was cautious not to touch him. I needed a somewhat clear head around him. "Of course I remembered." My mouth pulled up into a smile. "Are you going to be around when my shift ends later?" My voice sounded hopeful. "Yeah, I might stick around. Only if you agree to come sit with me when you're done working." I gulped as he looked at me. "Y-yeah. Of course." I could feel a pair of eyes burning through the side of my face. Jordan must have noticed Dillan come in. "I'll talk to you later then." His lips pulled up into that devilish half grin as he turned and found a table by a window. I tried to keep from staring at him for the last hour of my shift, but was failing. I glanced over at Jordan and our eyes met for a brief moment before he turned away. His face held a bit of annoyed anger. I knew he didn't like Dillan, but it wasn't his place to care about that. I huffed as I continued working. Where does he get off being mad at me? It's not my fault there is a connection between Dillan and I. It has nothing to do with him anyway. After our shift ended, I clocked out and was heading up front when I turned the corner and ran straight into Jordan. Faceplanting his chest, I bounced off of him and fell backwards. His arms wrapped around me just in time, and we stood like that staring into each other's eyes for a moment. I pulled away from him. "Thank you for catching me. I'm sorry for bumping into you." As I tried to walk past him he grabbed my arm gently and turned me back to face him again. "You don't have to always apologize, I should be the one saying sorry for last night. I crossed the line, and I know that there is no reason you should forgive me. I hate that we haven't spoke all day, though. Losing your friendship would suck, is there any chance of saving it?" His voice was hopeful and his eyes scanned my face for an answer. "As long as you aren't kissing me anymore we can be friends." I laughed a little and smacked his arm playfully to lighten the mood. He looked past me and smiled in return. "I always keep my promises, Millie." His tone turned more serious as he said my name. Then he walked past me. I turned towards Dillan sitting across the Cafe to see him staring at me. Had he heard our conversation? Did Jordan know he was listening!? I replayed our conversation in my head as I walked towards Dillan, realizing he probably heard that Jordan kissed me. s**t. I wonder what he was thinking about that?Did he even care? "Hey, Millie." His half smile made my heart flutter. "How has your day been so far?" "Decent.. and weird." I felt my face blushing and I looked down at my lap. "How so?" His voice sounded curious, but looking at his face he seemed to already have an answer in mind. "Just a lot of drama with a friend of mine. Nothing too crazy really." "You mean Jordan?" Of course he heard us. As my face turned even more red he tilted his head slightly. "What kind of drama are we talking about?" "Don't worry, nothing bad. Just some personal stuff between us. How's your day been?" I didn't want to talk about Jordan right now. All I could think of was the smell of Dillans breath hitting my face. We were once again leaning over the table towards each other. "Much better now." He grinned again, making me smile back. "So why did you want to know if I'd still be here? Miss me or something?" He chuckled as my face turned brighter red than before. "I actually wanted to talk to you about yesterday." I looked away from him and forced myself back in my chair. I needed a clear mind right now. "What about it? I didn't make you uncomfortable did I? I was a bit.. distracted. There's this feeling I can't shake when I'm around you, it's overpowering." I looked up at his face and saw him staring at me with longing in his eyes. His lips parted slightly and all I could think about was how soft they would feel against mine. His shirt pulled tighter as he leaned further across the table.. how good he would look without it? I bet his body was perfectly sculpted. He ran his fingers through his hair, and I felt my legs quiver. Jordan walked behind Dillan just then and stopped for a moment at the door. His face looked concerned, then he glared at Dillan and left. At least he was respectively leaving it alone this time. I needed to handle this by myself. It was the only way to understand my feelings. "I feel it too." Our faces were inches apart again, I could practically taste his breath. "I'm not sure what it is, but I can't seem to pull myself away from you." My words and body were saying all the wrong things. I was supposed to be telling him that he wasn't the one and it would never happen. Instead, the only thought in my head was how much I wanted to feel his lips against mine.. "Can I try something?" His voice was soft and quiet. I couldn't make a sound, so I shook my head yes, closing my eyes. His hand brushed against my cheek, leaving a trail of heat. He felt so good on my skin. I opened my eyes as his hand moved through my hair to the back of my neck. "I want you."
