Chapter 3

"Let me officially introduce the both of you", Arthur said awkwardly, as he struggled to gain control of the narrative.  "Dr. Alex Bryan meet Mr. Piers Anderson", he said, introducing them to each other. She smiled despite the fact he kept her waiting for three long hours.  "It's my pleasure to finally meet you Mr. Piers Anderson", she said, extending her hand slightly for a hand shake but he refused her handshake. He gave her a mean straight face despite her wearing her most charming smile. "I scheduled for a meeting with Dr. Alex Bryan, so where is he?", Piers queried Arthur in a protest, completely ignoring Alex. "He introduced me correctly, I am Dr. Alex Bryan", she said again, introducing herself politely, trying not to be discouraged. "What did you say? No you cannot be!", Piers said to her for the first time, acknowledging her presence.  "I am Dr. Alex -"  "I specifically told my source I wanted a man, I wanted a male psychiatrist, didn't you get that information?", he said, interrupting her. He looked visibly upset. "So what the hell are you doing here in my house?" She was shocked at his response. The annoyance should be the other way around and not him being mad at her but she was determined not to go overboard yet. "You saw my resume and my cover letter and were impressed and invited me here. I am sorry to disappoint you but Dr. Alex Bryan is a lady and not a man. I graduated top of my class in medical school and in residency and I can do whatever men can do!", she said in her defence. "Do I look like I freaking care?" Piers asked her, staring right into her blue eyes. "I need a male Doctor and you are not a man!", he pointed out to her rudely. "Excuse me but what has being a man got to do with my stellar qualifications and experience as a psychiatrist?!", she asked, almost in a tearful state. She was downcasted. This interview had taken an unexpected twist she never anticipated. He refused to answer her, rather he stared at her strangely. "I thought you knew my gender when you selected me for this interview? Was that why you kept me waiting for three hours?!", she fired back at his silence. "I specially asked for a male psychiatrist in the first place, you shouldn't have applied!", Piers too fired back.  She was beginning to tell, he wasn't someone she could reason with. He clearly was very arrogant, strong willed and full of himself. "I know Alex is a unisex name but I cleared stated in my resume and cover letter I was a female. But why should my gender matter anyway if I may ask?", she asked, trying to make sense of it all. "Surely there must be a deeper reason. He wasn't just trying to discredit her as a psychiatrist just because she was a female or was he?", she thought to herself. "I have no obligation to answer. Arthur please escort her out of the premises, she is a waste of my time!", Piers ordered, as he turned away from her dismissing her. She felt so violated in that instant, like her dignity as a person had been eroded and then a fuse blew up inside of her. "Who the hell do you think you are, treating me the way you did for the past three hours and talking to me like that?!", she yelled at him fuming. Her anger and raised voice shook Arthur and he stepped back a little bit. It also halted Piers' footsteps. "Is it because you are a billionaire and you feel you can talk and treat me like trash?!", she said, as he grabbed a hold of shirt sleeve and pulled him with all the strength she had until he turned to face her. He had ruined her perfect smile and the only emotion she had left was anger.  "I am the most qualified psychiatrist in all of Seattle! How dare you think you could walk away from me when I am not done talking to you?!", she said to him, almost in tears. "If you really want to end this conversation then you have to tell me why you truly disdain female psychiatrists?!", she yelled at him, demanding answers. Piers didn't bludge. He kept his stance and refused to answer her question which only infuriated her the more. "This is not a request, it is an order!", She said. "If you refuse to answer, I will report you to the state authorities for gender discrimination and verbal assault of a female psychiatrist!", she threatened. She was damn serious, she was going to go through with it, even if it meant ruining his reputation. She could tell he cherished it, which was part of the reason he sought the help of a psychiatrist privately. Piers paused for a while as he looked at her. She didn't know what was going through his mind. He was strong willed and she feared he was not going to give in to her demands and she would have to go through with her threat. "I can see you are a fighter, you have a fighting spirit", he said, complimenting her for the first time since they met. "So you really want to know why I want a male psychiatrist?", he repeated her question back to her. "Yes, tell me now", she insisted, with both her arms folded in front of her bosom. She was impatient to know what it was. "If you can trust me, all I can say is that It is for your safety as a lady", Piers said to her. Arthur nodded his head in support of what he had said, even though he didn't utter a word. She didn't know what the hell they were talking about but she certainly didn't trust either of them. They had acted in an untrustworthy way to her since she arrived at the mansion.
