I ran across the room into Randy's arms, and Nora wrapped around me as well. I sobbed uncontrollably, all the anger I felt towards them suddenly gone.
“You're okay honey?” Nora stroked my hair as she observed me.
They looked so tired, like they hadn't slept since I was taken away.
I nodded at her as convincingly as possible. “I'm fine.”
Dad kept his arm around me, his eyes on my bruises. “No, look at you.”
I shook my head, wiping my tears. “I'm fine dad.”
I gripped his arm as I lowered my voice. “I want to go home, Dad. Please.”
He took off his jacket and put it around my shoulders, covering me.
“You have half an hour to sort out your issues. It will be just you and the maids. If you even think of running, I'll know. Save yourselves the trouble,” Mr Grumpy threatened before he left the room.
I looked up at Randy, confused. “What deal? What is he talking about? You're not leaving me here, are you?”
Randy sighed heavily. “Why don't you sit down El.”
I eyed him, skeptical, but I took a seat regardless. “What's going on?”
“Elara, there's no easier way for me to say this to you. We can't take you home.”
I felt as if I had been punched in the gut by an iron fist.
“W-W-What do you mean?” I stuttered. “You can't leave me here! They're going to kill me!”
Nora spoke up. “They're not going to kill you, honey. You're their Luna.”
“What are you talking about?”
Who the s**t was Luna and why did everyone keep calling me that?!
“Each pack has an Alpha,” Randy explained. “For this pack, the Crescent Moon pack, it is Alpha Xavier. The Alpha is responsible for keeping the pack safe, leading and making decisions for the greater good of every pack member. Think of a kingdom. Every king needs a queen, and so the Alpha needs a Luna.”
“But werewolves don't pick their husbands or wives” Each wolf is fated to meet their significant other. Like what humans call soulmates. We call them mates. Your father and I are mates. The connection between mates is something that cannot be measured or explained. One is only fortunate to be able to find their fate mate.”
“Guys, that's all great,” I got up, “but I really just want to go home.”
“Just let us finish. Please?” Randy pleaded.
I reluctantly sat back down.
“And so,” Nora carried on, “Alpha Xavier, who is obviously a werewolf, also has his mate right. That mate would be his Luna and help him rule over his pack. You…you happen to be the mate. You are Alpha Xavier’s mate.”
I didn't know what to say. I just stared at them blankly with my mouth agape.
“We know this is a lot to take in along with everything else you've found out within the last few days—”
“There has to be a way around it,” I told them. “There has to be a way for him to let me go and find someone else. There has to be a way!”
“The Alpha has refused to reject you, Elara. He says you'll have to stay here, or he'll kill all of us. Elara,” Randy took my hand. “I don't care if he kills me. Nora and I are at fault. If we never invited you here none of this would have ever happened. But he knows where your mother is.”
My heart lurched. “What?”
“The Alpha…he's a merciless man. If you go against him or try to run, he will go after her.”
I shook my head, frustrated. “I'm only nineteen! I can't be his wife! And—and—he's a wolf for f**k's sake!”
Randy and Nora exchanged a look.
“What?” I looked at them. “What is it now?”
“Honey, if I'm a wolf,” Randy muttered, “then you're…you're part wolf too.”
The world was suddenly spinning.
I stood up, shaking my head furiously. “That's impossible! I don't—I've never turned into a wolf! I'm human!”
“You're a hybrid, Elara. Hybrids between humans and wolves are weaker, and their wolves are fragile. You remember that car accident you were in when you were six?”
When I was six I was in a severe car accident. There were six passengers, relatives and family friends. I was the only survivor. I lost my memory and had to relearn everything.
“What about it?” I croaked.
“You could've died that day, but your wolf protected you. She died that day, which is why you've grown up to be what seems like a regular girl. A human.”
I sat back down, my heart heavy. What else? Unicorns are real and mom is a leprechaun?I sank into the couch.
They both stayed quiet.
“So I have to stay here? This is my life now or we all die?” I asked, hoping that this was all some kind of joke.
“I'm so sorry hon…” Nora whispered.
She almost looked as devastated as I felt. Randy pulled out my phone and handed it over to me.
“Your mother knows everything. I already told her,” Randy said. “Just let her know you're okay.”
I nodded, quietly crying.
“This is seriously f****d up,” I sobbed.
Nora hugged me tightly. “I know hon. I know…”
