Found Out His Secret
Scarlett's POV
"Hey, Scarlett, you not heading home?"
One of my coworkers asked me who had come from the front office. I gave her a sad look.
"I'm working overtime again. See you later," I said, feeling a bit down. Then I went back to staring at my computer screen.
This is my third day working overtime at the office. I work at Asteria Group as the secretary to Victor Russo Asteria, the eldest son of the Asteria family who currently serves as Director.
My boss is a pretty tough guy. He's cold, harsh, and always criticizing. He's always demanding perfection, so I often have to work overtime because his requests are always changing.
The clock was already showing nine o'clock at night. I should've gone home at five in the afternoon.
Why does the office feel so empty? Did Victor go home first? Man, if that's true, he's sneaky.
I carried the finished files and walked over to Victor's office, my stern and cold-hearted boss.
When I touched the doorknob, I was surprised to see that he was still inside, talking on the phone.
"He's dead, with just one shot. Take care of that body, it's close to the office basement. Do it right and leave no traces."
My body suddenly went stiff when I heard that. Had Victor just said someone had died? Who? And who shot them?
Oh no, I should've turned back instead of eavesdropping like this.
"Today I only killed one person, and it might be the last one for this month. There aren't any more targets, so take care of—"
‘Nock.
My watch bumped against the door, making a slight noise in the office, which was usually quiet. Victor stopped talking, and I was absolutely terrified.
I was sweating like crazy. I was so incapacitated that I didn't even realize Victor was standing right in front of me.
"Scarlett."
I looked up at him slowly, then smiled a little.
"Sir, I thought you'd already left. I'll put these files on your desk."
Victor just raised one eyebrow, and I handed him the file, but he stepped away from the door and opened it wide.
"Put it away yourself, inside."
I took a deep breath and tried to keep it together. I acted like I didn't hear a thing, but anyone who was scared would probably be trembling.
As soon as I walked in, my heart was beating like crazy. My steps felt slow at first, but then I finally reached Victor's desk. I could hear the door to the room close and lock.
I slowly turned around after putting the file away, then tried to smile at Victor.
"Well, then, I'll be heading out, sir."
Victor gave me a look like he didn't think it was important, and he even smiled, but I knew it was a different kind of smile he only ever used with other people.
"It's not that simple, Scarlett. I haven't given you permission to leave yet," he said in a low voice.
He slowly walked up to me, staring intensely until he was right in front of me. Our bodies were only two steps apart.
"You heard something, right?" Victor reached out his hand. He took a few strands of my hair and played with them.
In all the years I've worked with Victor, this was the first time we'd spoken so close to each other, let alone made physical contact. To be more precise, it was Victor who touched my hair without permission.
"Heard something, sir? I don't get it."
Victor smirked, moving closer to me until we were almost touching, then whispered something in my ear.
"Liar, I know you heard something, Scarlett. I won't be able to forgive you if you're not honest," Victor whispered to me.
I just closed my eyes, and my hands were shaking as I held onto my skirt.
Victor took a step back and touched my chin, but I kept my eyes closed.
"Open your eyes, Scarlett, look at me."
I slowly opened my eyes and saw that Victor was looking at me. His dark eyes were right in front of mine. I was paralyzed with fear.
And now, he's got me, staring at him. It's pretty scary.
"I'll ask you one more time, did you hear everything?" His voice softened, and I finally couldn't take this burden anymore.
"Yes, Sir."
Victor let out a sigh, then let go of my chin.
"Tell me honestly, where did you hear it?"
I lowered my head, unable to look at him. Should I tell him the truth, that I only heard a single sentence? Even that had stopped because he'd stopped speaking.
"Come on, Scarlett, I won't hurt you."
I took a deep breath, then slowly turned to face him.
"You took out one target with one shot. That's all," I replied briefly.
I could totally see Victor smiling, and he nodded. I thought that was enough, and he'd let me go.
"Oh, you shouldn't have listened to that, Scarlett. That's something you shouldn't have had to hear."
"I'm sorry, sir. I won't do it again, and I'll just pretend I never heard those words," I apologized to him, my knees shaking and my hands trembling.
I was really trying to suppress my fear, but how could I not be afraid? I was talking to a murderer, and it was my own boss.
I was afraid I might get killed too.
I tried to run away from here, but Victor grabbed my hand.
"Ah! Let me go, sir!" He grabbed my hand.
I was stuck in the office when I heard him telling his assistant he'd killed someone!
"You think you can just walk away from me now that you know everything?" He gave me a grin. I knew my job wouldn't be easy starting today.
"You’ll be useful to me. Starting today, you’ll work with me every moment," he stared at my body intensely, "your body can serve as your guarantee."
